The History of the
Mansion at Bald Hill
The year of 1892, Roxanna Wentworth Bowen, heiress to the Pullman
Train fortune and her husband Clarence Bowen had purchased the 91
acre parcel known locally as Bald Hill. For the Bowen Family this was
a continuance of family roots “on the hill” which dates back to the
late 1700’s The industrialist named Henry Bowen, brought fame to the
small town of Woodstock at his Victorian summer home, “Roseland
Cottage”, from which he entertained dignitaries and three Presidents.
The three Presidents of the United States to visit the cottage were
18th President Ulysses S. Grant, 19th President Rutherford B. Hayes,
and 23rd President Benjamin Harrison.
Prior to the Bowen’s owning Bald Hill, it was a barren crown associated
with the farm of open fields and crop growing. This was remedied
quickly by the planting of thousands of maples, birches, pines and
oak trees. While the trees were taking root, the Bowen’s built the most
ambitious of houses on the hill. The Mansion is a grand structure set
at the top of the property and now completely hidden from any view
of the outside world, just as Mrs. Bowen had planned. The Mansion
stretches four stories high over the ship-like basement and is over 13,000
square feet. A tour of the home along the three main floors would guide
you through 21 rooms, constructed in the late 1890’s.
In 1952, Albert and Nancy Simonds purchased the Mansion and the
Bald Hill property. The Simonds had relocated to Southbridge, MA
with their family and continued to develop the Simonds Machine
Company, which serviced American Optical by producing optical lens
grinding machinery. Albert Simonds found that he needed a reliable
foot switch to use on his machines, which would allow the machine
operator to have both hands free for whatever task is at hand. He
developed the foot switch and subsequently, Linemaster Switch
Corporation was born. The Mansion was used as office space for the
company into the 1990’s while a barn was built a couple hundred yards
away to support Linemaster manufacturing.
The manufacturing facility is still located on the grounds of Bald Hill
encompassing over 50,000 square feet. In 2002, Joe Carlone became
the new owner of the Linemaster Business and The Mansion at Bald
Hill. Mr. Carlone brought new life to the Mansion at Bald Hill, turning
it into a fine dining restaurant and Bed and Breakfast. He brought in
the top talent of Joel Theriaque, Scott Plantier, and Janet Waterman
to manage and develop the Mansion at Bald Hill. The Mansion now
features a New Banquet Center that was established in 2015 and
the two facilities serve as a haven for celebration and as a retreat for
relaxation.
The Mansion at Bald Hill is in the heart of what the New York Times
calls “One of the most ten scenic drives in the nation.”
