Page 22 BOSTON HOMES: THE COMPLETE GUIDE • www.bostonhomeslink.com Week of June 9 - 15, 2007 N.E. Patriots’ QB Tom Brady is selling his Back Bay condo N early three years after New England Patriots’ star quarterback Tom Brady bought one of the lavish condominiums at the Burrage Mansion on Commonwealth Avenue, he is selling the palatial home. The 10-room residence has an expansive living room with a fireplace – one of three in this 3,412-square-foot domicile – a library/office, a formal dining room, a master bedroom suite with a sumptuous marble bath and a large dressing room, plus two guest bedrooms with full baths, a powder room, a bar and a laundry room, all on one floor. The home was listed at $5.39 million when it went on the market about two weeks ago and went under agreement in one day. Tracy Campion, president of Campion & Company, was the exclusive listing broker and the seller. She confirmed that the property was under agreement but would not elaborate. The sale won’t be close until this winter. It includes two parking spaces in a belowground garage. Brady purchased the home for $4.125 million. The Burrage Mansion is one of the most distinctive properties in the Back Bay, overlooking the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. Built between 1899 and 1901 for Albert Cameron Burrage, it was designed to look like a French Gothic chateau reminiscent of a castle in the Loire Valley of France. It boasts steep gables, conical turrets, picturesque dormers and decorated chimneys. The undercut sandstone carvings include scores of dragons, griffins, cherubs, lions, gargoyles and figurines. As ornate as its exterior is the vestibule, which has an ornate coffered ceiling, a mosaic floor, an elaborate fireplace flanked by built-in leaded glass cases and a spectacular carved marble staircase, which has a beautiful stained glass window on its landing. Burrage was a lawyer, financier, horticulturalist and philanthropist who amassed his wealth from legal fees and investments in copper mines in the Midwest. He lived in the home until his death in 1931. Interestingly, a smaller house stood on the site before he tore it down to build this mansion – for $200,000! Four years ago, during its review of the redevelopment plans for the mansion, the Boston Landmarks Commission, in an unusual move, declared that the great hall and stairway on the first floor and the common hall on the second floor and its carved wooden balustrade should be preserved and not altered. ELV Associates developed the condominiums, and the Grassi Design Group was the architect. Interior designer Anne Becker of Nantucket added just the right touch to create a delightful home away from the limelight and the football field. — Marilyn Jackson High ceilings and elegant crown molding surround this living space, which includes tall windows and a carved fireplace above which is a plasma TV. There is also a window seat with a long view of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. Next to the formal dining room is another grand living area with a three-bay bowfront. Paneled wainscot adds to the elegance of the home.
