Every April, on Poem in Your Pocket Day, people throughout the United States celebrate by selecting a poem, carrying it with them, and sharing it with others throughout the day as schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, and other venues ring loud with open readings of poems from pockets. Poem in Your Pocket Day was originally initiated in 2002 by the Office of the Mayor, in partnership with the New York City Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education, as part of the city’s National Poetry Month celebration. In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative national, encouraging individuals around the country to join in. This year Poem in Your Pocket Day will be held on April 30. Be sure to share your poem selection on Twitter by using the hashtag #pocketpoem. Be sure to ask your teacher about the various forms of communication they use in their classrooms. Why is Poetry Relevant to me and my child? Poetry is actually part of our Florida Standards in ELA. There is at least one Literary Standard in each grade that specificly addresses poetry. Our wonderful Maplewood teachers have been teaching these standards throughout the year. Additionally, poetry is a great way to work on fluency. When students re-read poetry they are practicing fluency. When they present their poetry to the family or class, they are working on their speaking and listening standards. By simply exposing our children to poetry, so many standards are incorporated in a fun way! Try having your child practice their favorite poem repeatedly for a week and then present it to the family during dinner on a Friday night!
