The Seán Oisín (S 22), the Galway
based steel-hulled twin rigger has
recently been bought by a trio
of West Cork fishermen and has
returned to her original home port
of Castletownbere where she has
been renamed “Stella Maris”
Justin O’Mahoney, Dave Hitz and
Jason Sheehan aquired the vessel
recently and bring a wealth of
experience to the Stella Maris.
The three friends grew up fishing
together under the tutelage of
Jason’s Father Ebbie Sheehan who
retired last year.
Built in 2000 as the “Ardent” at
the Piriou Chantiers, Corncareau,
yard in France originally for the
Orpen family in Castletownbere,
the vessel was later sold to Dingle
and then Rossaveal.
The “Stella Maris” with its 233
gross tonnage is driven by a
Caterpillar 3512 600 Kw engine
supported by two auxiliary
Caterpillars. The main engine
is fitted with a Leroy Somer
alternator to supply power to the
vessel at sea. The main auxiliary is
a 230 hp Caterpillar supported by a
Perkins harbour set rated at 40 hp.
The propulsion package consists
of Masson sterngear and a Kort
nozzle with a 2.5m variable pitch

vessel and act as agent.

Coveney announces € 2.7 Million grant aid
The Minister for Agriculture,
Food and the Marine, Simon
Coveney TD, has announced the
award of €2.7 million in grantaid to 18 seafood processing
companies under the 2015
Seafood Processing Business
Investment Scheme.
Taken in conjunction with private
sector investment, the total
investment will be almost €9
million in 2015. The supported
projects are projected to deliver
145 Jobs and €41 million in
additional sales by 2017. The
grants are co-funded by the
Department of Agriculture Food
and the Marine and the European
Fisheries Fund under the Seafood
Development Programme.
Minister Coveney, in stressing the
value of this grant-aid package to
the Seafood Processing industry
said, “this investment of almost
€9 million in 2015 will enable
our innovative seafood processers
to continue their strong growth
trend over recent years that
will see the sector continuing
to grow sales internationally
and grow employment in our
coastal communities. It will
put the required technology,
infrastructure and standards in
place to allow these businesses
develop added value seafood
products that are in great demand
on the global market.”
The Minister concluded “the
Irish seafood processing
industry generally, in line with
Government policy under the
Food Harvest 2020 plan, has
strong plans to significantly grow
its business further in the years
ahead. I believe we can look
forward with confidence to seeing
the seafood processing sector
continuing to be an integral part
of Government’s policy to grow
our indigenous seafood industry”.
The 18 companies receiving
grant aid are from 9 coastal
counties across the country,
namely Clare, Cork, Donegal,
Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Louth,
Mayo and Wexford. The Seafood
Processing Business Investment
Scheme is implemented as part
of our Seafood Development
Programme. Grant aid is at a
maximum rate of 20% for primary
processing and 30% for secondary
processing projects and is cofunded on a 50/50 basis by the
Department of Agriculture, Food
and the Marine and the European
Fisheries Fund

Three new appointments to the
Seafish Board
Three new appointments have
been made to the Sea Fish
Industry Authority’s (Seafish)
Board.
Brian Young, Alison Austin OBE
and Jonathan Shepherd will help
steer the industry body when they
join the Board for a three year
period from 1 April 2015. Brian
has been appointed as Deputy
Chair and Alison and Jonathan
have been appointed as board
members.
Seafish is sponsored jointly by the
four UK fisheries administrations
and the appointments were made
by George Eustice, Minister
for Farming, Food and Marine
Environment at Defra; Richard
Lochhead, the Cabinet Secretary
for Rural Affairs, Food and
the Environment in Scotland;
Michelle O’Neill, the Minister
for Agriculture and Rural
Development in Northern Ireland;
and Carl Sergeant, the Minister
for Natural Resources in Wales.
Appointments to the Seafish board
are made on merit in accordance
with the Code of Practice issued
by the Commissioner for Public
Appointments. There is also a
requirement for the political
activities of appointees to be
made public, and Brian, Alison
and Jonathan have declared that
they have not engaged in any
political activity in the last five
years.
The Ministers thanked outgoing
Deputy Chair Jane Ryder and
Board members Michel Kaiser
and Philip Huggon for their
contribution to Seafish’s work
over several years.
Paul Williams, Chief Executive
at Seafish commented “Michel,
Jane and Phil have been great
ambassadors for Seafish and
brought a wealth of knowledge
to their roles on the Board. I am
sorry to lose their contribution but
I am also greatly looking forward
to working with Alison, Brian
and Jonathan who will bring new
vision and different expertise to
the Seafish Board, particularly
as we are about to begin our next
three year corporate plan from
April 2015.”

Risk Assessment for Sourcing
Seafood (RASS) - a new Seafish
product
Seafish have developed a fisheries
risk assessment tool (known as
RASS) that will help buyers make
an informed judgement on the
risks they face when sourcing
seafood.
RASS will not tell you which
fisheries to source from or which
to avoid. It will present up-todate information on the potential
reputational risks of sourcing a
particular species in a clear and
structured format.
RASS will score risk on a fivepoint scale of 1 (very low risk) to
5 (very high risk) for each of the
four components of sustainability
(stock, management, bycatch,
and habitat). For the purpose
of simplicity and transparency
Seafish have avoided going down
the route of basing RASS on
complicated scoring systems used
by other schemes. Identifying a
component as a high risk does
not necessarily mean a fishery
is unsustainable (due to the
inherent uncertainty with some
assessments), but will make
a seafood buyer aware of the
impacts of the fishery that may
be of concern to their customers
or a third party (i.e. NGO), and a
potential reputational hazard.
A few profiles of interest that are
currently available include:
Atlantic cod, Division VIIa (Irish
Sea), Demersal otter trawl
Haddock in the Irish Sea,
Demersal otter trawl,
Nephrops in the Irish Sea (East),
Demersal otter trawl,
Thornback ray, West of Scotland,
Irish and Celtic Seas, demersal
otter trawl.
To date 165 RASS profiles have
been uploaded to the website and
additional profiles are being added
every day, increasing to 250 by
the end of March and 300 by the
end of the year.

Seafood Training Network
Northern Ireland Launched
The new Seafood Training
Network Northern Ireland was
launched on 12th March 2015
and support was pledged by
fishmongers, processors and fish
fryers as well as the catching
sector, all of whom warmly
welcomed the new initiative.
The Seafood Training Network
Northern Ireland is the second of
three Seafood Training Networks
to be established by Seafish and
the Seafood Training Academy. The first network, established in
late 2014 is the Welsh Network,
and its Chairman, James Wilson
(mussel farmer and Seafish
board member) was on hand
to provide the opening address
at the launch in the Burrendale
Hotel, Co. Down. In welcoming
the Northern Ireland Network
James stated that it is knowledge
and skills that allow the industry
to expand and become more
successful, and he acknowledged
the key role that Seafish and
the Seafood training Academy
play in developing qualifications
and training programmes that
allow individuals to develop and
become more professional.
Following on, Lee Cooper
representing the Seafood
Training Academy and Seafish
explained that the purpose
behind these Networks was
to bring together training and
employers to collaborate and
work together to support the
seafood industry. “Networks
are a way of finding out from
employers what they want us
to do, and for trainers to tailor
their services to meet employer’s
needs” Lee said. “While every
fish and shellfish employer in
Northern Ireland may able to
benefit from the Network, 20-30
key employers will make up the
membership of the Network and
these members are the ones that
will be expected to provide the
regular feedback and comment
that the Network will depend on. Over the coming weeks we will
actively seek additional members
and will begin to consult with
employers over training needs” he

Sea Angling Update
This five hour match with pegs
ranging from 1 to 150 saw a flurry
of activity throughout the day.
Fishing wasn’t easy and every fish
was well fought for. In the Senior
event Harry McKee jnr, from
Belfast took the gold and the IFSA
All Ireland Open Shore Fishing
Championship 2015 title. Harry
will now captain the Irish team in
the 2016 shore event being held in
the UK next year. In second place
taking silver was Darren O’Connor
and in the bronze medal position
in third was Paul Whelan. Lisa
Gormley took the title for the ladies
while Daniel Reynolds came first
in the junior section followed by
Waterford estuary was Rinnashark
Sea Angling Club destination for
their boat competition. The whiting
proved to be a lot smaller than
those of the last few months from
the shore but flounders, dabs and
rockling added to the numbers.
The day turned out to be cold with
winds swinging SE to NE back to
SE, but the constant flow helped to
keep the fish some bit active. All
sort of rigs were used with the full
complement of baits- lug, wraps,
crabs, maddies and mackerel.

strangely absent.

had a whirlwind of fishing as he
made the most of a few good days.
An increase in water temperatures
gave him the chance to catch some
cracking bass. All fish in excellent
condition and fighting hard, ranging
in around 56 cm/2,21 kg. Tomasz
takes part in the National Bass
Programme run by IFI and as soon
as the fish are tagged he releases
them back on their merry way.
Like any All Ireland when two great
teams meet, the craic is mighty.
When Dublin and Kerry meet it
could be said to be All-mighty
!.. In the Annual Kerry vs Dublin
specimen hunt, Patrick Fagan from
Dublin got the ball rolling. He
landed one in the net straight away
with a Rockling of 1.79lbs 43cm.
We look forward to the replay when
the Kingdom fights back !

Cork Harbour welcomed back
it’s mullet and experienced guide
Richie Ryan had one of his
favourite types of fishing lately
with a fine mullet on the fly. He is a
big fan of this wonderful fish which
punches well above its weight when
hooked. Richie laments the fact that
there was a noticeable decline in the
number of mullet in the harbour last
year. Further east up the coast in
Youghal saw some lovely pollack
being caught by Fionn O’Connell
while fishing the wrecks.

The Irish Federation of Sea Anglers
(IFSA) All Ireland Open Shore
Fishing Championships took place
on Saturday 7th March 2015 at
Ballinesker Beach in Co Wexford.
A fantastic turnout with 184 anglers
lining the beach like an army of
soldiers ready for battle. Organised
by Courtown and Kilmuckridge
Sea Angling Clubs this event saw
anglers from all over Ireland and
beyond. Wexford was a beautiful
setting with a three kilometre
stretch of bending rods silhouetted
in the sunset.
