34 Cygnus The Skipper JUNE 2015 Irish Boatbuilder secures Norwegian inshore vessel order Both the reputation of Murphy Marine services and that of the Cygnus hull led Norwegian fisherman Tor Eirik Bang to Valentia Island off the South West coast of Ireland to commission the building of ‘Marie Bang’, a Cygnus Cyclone 35, which leaves for Norway in the coming weeks. Tor began fishing with his father as a teenager and has operated his own commercial fishing boat for close to forty years. With such vast experience, Tor had a very definite specification in mind and after considerable research found that the bespoke design approach employed by Murphy Marine Services and the flexibility offered with the Cygnus range could accommodate this. After initial meetings with Fionan Murphy, owner of Murphy Marine Services, Tor decided on the Cygnus Cyclone 35 Hull. During the following weeks Tor and the boat yard worked on and came up with a layout that best suited Tors requirements. This layout provided comfortable accommodation TOM HAND ELECTRONICS FROM MALIN TO MIZEN For top quality marine electronic equipment and service from KNS, Simrad, JRC, Wesmar, Icom, Koden, Kaijodenki, E-Sonar. Best wishes and every success to Tor Bang & Family of the “Marie Bang” Dingle T: 066-9151640 F: 066-9151779 M: 086 2547512 E: [email protected] and living quarters which are paramount when fishing in Norwegian waters as well as a large well laid out working deck. The Vessel is powered with a Iveco Cursor FPT C9 engine which will deliver 550hp at 2,530 rpm Coupled to a Heavy duty ZF325IZ Gear box complete with trolling valve which was supplied by Joe Kirwan Marine. The V box was used to keep the Engine as far aft as possible in true Scandinavian style. The aft engine allowed for three large longitudinal fish holds forward of the engine room bulkhead. These fish holds are heavily insulated and have individual pump out systems. The Substantial engine also provides power to the Vessels variable displacement hydraulic pump which is coupled directly to the gearbox’s live PTO. Another PTO on the aft end of the engine drives the 2.5inch Deck wash pump and an extra 120 amp alternator. The Cyclone 35 is rigged as a Quick change over multipurpose fishing vessel and to this end will leave Valentia Island with a Spencer Carter NH5 Net hauler fitted well forward to Stb. The Hauler is fitted on a Stainless steel platform and can easily be remove to be replaced with Tor’s longlining system. The Fishing station at the hauler has Secondary Kobelt controls, trolling valve control, Steering and bow thruster control fitted neatly inside the gunwale and aft of the Hauler. Also in typical Scandinavian style Tor went for a walk in type deckhouse which gave him access to his engine room. This deckhouse is kept over to the port gunwale with its access door on the aft side. This house doubles nicely as an area to keep his weather gear as the Dry exhaust passes through. Forward of the Deckhouse is the vessels deck crane which has a lifting capacity of 250kg at 5meters. The Crane which also includes a winch will be used to lift the vessels catch from the fish hold, Handle the large king Crab pots when being used and also will be used in conjunction with the purpose built net stacker. The yard also provided a large aluminium fish tank which has a secondary base which can be elevated hydraulically to bring the catch to the top of the tank. Cygnus 35 JUNE 2015 The Skipper Tor Bang from Norway with the Murphy Marine team onboard his new vessel The boat is fitted with a large bespoke moulded wheelhouse and fly bridge, again the wheel house is heavily insulated. The forward cabin provides 3 comfortable full size berths and a large toilet/Shower room to port. The wheelhouse has a large console area which houses the Vessels comprehensive array of Electronics which the yard fitted in conjunction with Tom Hand Electronics of Dingle. The Wheelhouse also incorporates a Galley and a comfortable lounge area. A hatch in the wheelhouse floor leads to the vessels technical room which houses, batteries, Battery chargers, inverters, Heaters, calorifier and various other items. Fionan praised Niall O Hara who Cygnus Cyclone 26/30/31-35 is the yards Naval architect for his attention to detail and his help in maximising every inch of space to its full potential. Commenting on the completed ‘Marie Bang’, Tor credits the professionalism of Murphy Marine Services throughout the design and build process stating that ‘as the boat was being built, I modified the specification and looked for new items to be added and this was never an issue. As a result I am returning to Norway with a boat that is entirely bespoke to my requirements.’ For more information on the Cygnus range or other services offered by Murphy Marine Services visit www.cygnusboats. com or contact Fionan at 0669476883/ 0872809861.
