Why the Commitment?
Josiena volunteered to work for the Marana Run. After working much of the day she decided to
run the 5K at the last minute.
She finished the race, which was a huge accomplishment for her and provided a great source of
motivation. Josiena responded by joining the Thornydale Track team. This was her first
involvement in organized sports. She won her first race ever in 1st place. She has started reading
books about athletes and making healthy food choices. We all started running together as a
family.
Preparing for 2014, Josiena had started training for the Marana Run in January. Her training paid
off and she placed first in her age group. This was a 9-minute improvement from the year
before.
Running has had a positive effect on her self confidence. Josiena was named most improved
student from her teacher that same quarter. Her energy has motivated the whole family to
become more physically active. Some of my favorite mother-daughter moments have been
spent at the gym. Josiena's running continues with no end in sight. She has received over 20 first
place ribbons to date.

2013-2014 Event Highlights
The 2013 Marana Run/Walk was a huge success! It was our biggest
event yet, with over 400 runners, 50 booths, and 20 sponsors. Now
entering its third year, the event has become an annual Marana tradition
within the community.
In 2014, the Marana Run/Walk showcased “elite runners” and a chance
for all 5K racers to win prize money for the first time ever! All sponsor
booths also offered a fun activity for children to help increase
community interaction and visibility for our supporters.
In 2015 the Marana Run Walk will implement the 5k Wheelchair event.
After a strong community involvement and much dedicated success
from volunteers we will be working with the local school district to raise
money to build the non-competitive running tracks for the future.
Childhood diabetes is becoming a growing epidemic. This
can lead to many other risk factors with serious
consequences. Our goal is to promote an “outdoor
movement” for children in our local community. We hope to
empower them with information that will lead to better
decisions and improve their overall health.
The Marana Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the
Town of Marana and the Marana Schools 2340 Foundation.
Together, through the Marana Run/Walk, we will raise
enough money to build tracks at local Marana schools.
In 2015, the Marana Run/Walk race will benefit a new track
for Thornydale Elementary School. As a community we have
a responsibility to our children and provide them with the
opportunity to participate in sports and other fun outdoor
activities.
Estes Elementary School was the recipient of a new
track through funds raised at the
2013 Marana Run/Walk. Thornydale 2014.
