Catholic Digest “ Great Cathedrals of Italy “
Monday June 15 DAY 1 Depart Newark on an overnight flight to Milan
Tuesday June 16 DAY 2: MILAN- Welcome to Italy. We are greeted by our English speaking tour escort
and transferred to Milan where we see one of the greatest cathedrals in Italy. An exceptionally large and elaborate Gothic cathedral, the Duomo di Milano is one of the most famous buildings in Europe. It is the largest
Gothic cathedral and the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world. We explore the interior on a guided
tour and celebrate Mass here. There is an opportunity to visit the center of Milan, before we settle into the hotel for a good night’s rest. Overnight Milan. (Dinner at the hotel)
Wednesday June 17 DAY 3- MILAN- TURIN- WORLD’S FAIR- Visit the World’s Fair which takes
place in a different country every five years. Expo 2015, with over 60 pavilions built around the theme of cultural and culinary traditions is expected to be the largest fair yet. The theme of the Expo is “ Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” . You have time to explore the site on your own and taste food from all over the planet including a visit to the Italian and the American pavilions which will be featuring truck food from all across our
country. In the afternoon we depart for Turin. Dinner is on your own tonight. Overnight Turin. (B.)
Thursday June 18 DAY 4 - TURIN- HOLY SHROUD EXIBIT- IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF BLESSED
FRASSATI and SAINT DON BOSCO
See Duomo di San Giovanni and the Holy Shroud. The Archdiocese of Turin, custodian of the Shroud of Turin, has announced that the shroud, venerated by many as the burial cloth of Christ, will be on display April 19June 24, 2015. The public display will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of St. John Bosco, the
founder of the Silesians. The theme for the 2015 display is “The greatest love." We also see the tomb of
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a Turin native, fun-loving, avid athlete, devout Catholic and benefactor of the
poor, called the “saint for youth of the Third Millennium”, who was beatified by John Paul II in 1990. So
revered is he that his relics were carried to World Youth Day in Spain in 2011 and again to World Youth day in
2013 in Brazil. Mass is celebrated at Basilica of Maria Ausiliatrice (Our Lady Help of Christians) where we see
the tombs of Saint John Bosco and Saint Mary Mazzarello. In the evening a culinary treat waits. The Slow
Food movement began in Turin as a reaction to fast food, and got its start in protest to the opening of a
McDonald’s near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Slow food focuses on taking pleasure in eating, of enjoying the
freshest local ingredients from local food producers and preserving and celebrating local culinary traditions.
Today we visit Eatily, a food emporium where you see the slow food movement at its best. Dinner is on your
own tonight. Overnight in the Turin area. (B.)
Friday June 19 DAY 5: PADUA-VENICE- Depart Turin for a stop in Padua to see the Basilica of St. Anthony with bronze works by Donatello. Celebrate Mass at Basilica and see Capella degli Scrovegni with Giotto
masterpieces. In the late afternoon settle into your hotel, near Venice, also known as the Queen of the Adriatic.
Overnight Venice area. (B.D.)
Saturday June 20 DAY 6: VENICE- City of romance and splendor awaits us. Enjoy a full day in Venice,
including a visit to the amazing St. Mark’s Cathedral. Basilica di San Marco, is the most famous of the many
churches of Venice and one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in the world. Located just off the
Grand Canal, the gleaming basilica overlooks the Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) and adjoins the Doge's
Palace. San Marco is a cathedral, but has not always been so: it was the Doge's chapel until it became the seat
of the Archbishop of Venice in 1807. Here we celebrate Mass and see the Square, the Doge’s Palace, and the
Bridge of Sights. Afternoon at leisure to explore the city on your own. Overnight Venice Area. (B.)
Sunday June 21 DAY 7: FLORENCE - Explore the city considered by many to be the cultural heart of Italy. Visit some of the important sites of Florence, including Stanta Maria del Fiore (also known simply as the
Duomo) the cathedral of Florence, known for its distinctive Renaissance dome, designed by Brunelleschi, on a
guided walking tour. The impressive Gothic cathedral complex includes the Duomo, the famous Baptistery
designed by Giotto and a Campanile. We visit the Duomo and the Baptistry before walking to Santa Croce, the
church where Dante, Michelangelo and Leonardo do Vince are buried and where we celebrate Mass. Also visit
the Academia with its famous statue of David by Michelangelo. Dinner is at leisure tonight. Overnight in
Florence area. (B.)
Monday June 22 DAY 8: FLORENCE- WINE CATHEDRAL (TUSCANY)- ASSISI- The drive this
morning takes us through the lovely villages and rolling hills of Tuscany to what many call the Wine Cathedral. Here we learn all about local wine making and have a taste of the many varieties of wine. Following lunch
WWW.SELECTINTERNATIONALTOURS.COM
we continue to Assisi and Mass at St Mary of the Angels Basilica.
Overnight in Assisi. (B.L. Dinner at the hotel.)
Tuesday June 23 DAY 9 : ASSISI- ORVIETO- ROME
We celebrate Mass at one of the chapels in St. Francis Basilica and
walk across town to the Basilica of St Clare. Depart for Orvieto
where we have a late lunch accompanied by the local Chianti, Orvieto Classico which this region is famous for. Next stop is the
magnificent Cathedral of Orvieto. The Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning goldand-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the
Sistine Chapel. The Cathedral, was begun in 1290 to commemorate
the miracle at Bolsena, a town situated just to the southwest, where
in 1263 a priest witnessed the miraculous appearance of drops of
blood on a Host that he was consecrating; a large silver shrine in
the Cappella (chapel) del Corporale contains the Holy Corporal
(linen altar cloth), which we see on our visit. Continue to Rome
for overnight. (B.L. Dinner at the hotel)
Wednesday June 24 DAY 10- PAPAL AUDIENCE- VATICAN TREASURES- This morning we attend the weekly Papal
Audience, one of the highlights of our trip as we see the Holy Father, Pope Francis today. Following the audience we have time for
lunch on own and shopping for religious goods. We gather again in
the afternoon for a visit of the grandest church in Christendom, St.
Peter's Basilica, built on the site where St. Peter was martyred.
Rest of the day is at leisure to explore Rome on your own. Overnight in Rome. (B)
Thursday June 25 DAY 11- THE GREAT CATHEDRALS
OF ROME -This morning we celebrate Mass at the Basilica of St.
Mary Major, one of the oldest shrines dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. This shrine contains a relic from the manager of the infant Jesus. Visit the Holy Stairs and the Basilica of St. John the Lateran,
the former residence of the popes prior to their return to Rome in
1377. Dedicated to John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, the
Basilica of St. John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano)
is the first among the four major basilicas of Rome.
It is also the cathedral of the bishop of Rome, the Pope, and is thus
known as Omnium urbis et orbis Ecclesiarum Mater et Caput:
"Cathedral of Rome and of the World." Built by Constantine the
Great in the 4th century, San Giovanni in Laterano was the first
church to be built in Rome. It contains several important relics, a
lovely 13th-century cloister and an ancient baptistery (San Giovanni in Fonte). Our last stop today is St. Paul Outside the Walls, one
of the five major basilicas of Rome. Originally founded by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century, the Basilica di San Paolo is the
burial place of Saint Paul the Apostle. Tonight we have a special
dinner in Castel Gondolfo, an hour outside of Rome where we see
the papal summer residence and enjoy dinner with wine in a
lakeside restaurant. Overnight in Rome. (B.Special dinner)
