The Marigold Festival began in 1971 with the goal of fostering community spirit and rejuvenating our town. This year would have marked the 45th year of the festival, but there was a six year time period when the festival did not happen – from 2003 – 2008. We are grateful to Emily Eisenman, current Winterville mayor, for bringing back the festival and running it for four years and for Ron Wetherbee who ran it for the last two years. Proceeds from our festivals go to help fund community projects. See the article in the insert on how volunteers and festival proceeds are helping to revive the Carter-Coile Country Doctor’s Museum. Support of the business community makes the festival possible. Be sure to tell the sponsors you see in this publication how much you appreciate what they do for the community. This year promises to be a day filled with art, music, food, and fun! Read all about it in this year’s insert! Hartle You may have noticed some activity at the Doctor’s Museum recently. Starting last October, Sam Alvarez and I began the daunting task of taking inventory of all of the items Emma Foley in the Carter-Coile Doctor’s Museum (located next to the Winterville Library). The Museum has been closed for years due to lack of funds and lack of interest so it was in pretty bad shape. When one first starts a curatorial project, be it in an archive or a museum, one first must take inventory. Different items require different curatorial techniques. Actually, the very first thing I did was to take dozens of photographs of the Museum as it was. Then we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. We took each item out of each case, wiped it Winterville Library 115 Marigold Lane down with a damp cloth and placed it on a large piece cardboard next to a ruler and its label and took several photographs of each item or group, known as a “lot”, of items. Sam was the wrapping master. He provided all of the butcher paper and most of the bubble wrap that we used to wrap the items for their protection during the move. Once photographed, Sam wrapped each item and then I labeled the package with the case number, shelf number, item name/description, and package number. Sam wrapped so carefully that we knew the items were well protected. We did that over several weeks a few hours at a time. I kept an inventory notebook as we went along. A few weeks later, Diana Hartle and I spent a couple of days boxing all of the packages and labeling the boxes. We then went to work on the books. We used paint brushes to wipe off some of the mold and then boxed up all of the books. There were probably one hundred books in all types of condition. When we reshelve them, they will be wiped with ethanol wipes to, hopefully, kill the remaining mold and mold spores. The new HVAC system should mitigate this problem. In January, Diana Hartle, Brenda Mercer, Traci O’Brien, Barry Scott, Ian Thomas, Maude Todd, and I finished what needed to get done so we could move the items to the storage units where we are storing everything in the Museum while Mike Todd works his magic fixing what needs fixing. We are extremely grateful to Classic City Moving for donating two storage units while the renovations take place at the Museum. Brenda and Maude worked together in the back room boxing books, bottles, and anything else that needed to go. This had to be done very carefully so as not to break the glass or fragile frames. I mostly labeled items and worked on the inventory and helped out when somebody needed an extra hand. When we were done dealing with all of the items, I created an Excel spreadsheet and typed all the information into it. So now we have an official inventory of everything in the Museum! Now it was time to move everything to the two storage units. One unit we used for boxed Lee Hartle items and the other for furniture and larger items, such as the examination table, the wheelchairs, and book cases. This took a few trips, but luckily we had two trucks and some fantastic volunteers. Now that everything is out of the way, Mike Todd is working to complete his renovations. Money from the 2014 Marigold Festival proceeds have gone, in part, to help fund these renovations. The last update from Mike indicated that the interior has been repaired and newly painted. The floor finishers are working to restore the floors. In the near future, the Museum will be new and improved and, hopefully, with the help of volunteers, will be open for visitors to come see all of the incredible medical items we have on our wonderful Country Doctor’s Museum. This year's featured Winterville house. The Pittard-Coile-Harris house was built about 1890 by Aquila Pittard. It was purchased by Laura Pittard Coile and William Rutherford Coile in 1907. Ronald T. Harris, grandson of Laura Pittard Coile and W. Rutherford Coile and great, great nephew of Aquila Pittard purchased the home in 1975. Four generations, Aquila and Sarah Pittard, Laura and W. Rutherford Coile, L.H. and Emily Coile Harris, and Ronald T. Harris have lived in this home since it was built. William Rutherford Coile was superintendent of the Clarke County School District from 1929 to 1956, and the W.R. Coile Middle School bears his name. Ronald T. Emily Eisenman, Mayor If this is your first Marigold Festival, we hope you enjoy your day. If you’ve been here before, you will notice the City of Winterville has made a lot of park improvements since last year. The City had funding available from the 2005 SPLOST referendum that was earmarked for Pittard Park improvements. The work began in early 2014 when we established a Community Garden near the fire hall. A tour of the Garden will be held at 11:30 am – meet at the Community Garden booth or at the Garden. In December 2014 work began on additional sidewalks in the park. Over a mile of sidewalk was added, and residents and visitors are already enjoying them! Phase 2 of the project included modernization of the restroom building and the addition of a smaller pavilion attached to the restroom. Phase 3 is ongoing and when completed will include disc golf, a multi-use court, a natural playground, and a pump track for bicycles. The City was recently awarded a grant by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for a nature trail and pavilion that will be located in the northeast section of the park. The nature trail will feature educational displays highlighting the wildlife that can be viewed in this area of the park. Construction on this phase is expected to begin in late 2015. Her subjects range from birds to old houses to the beloved cats she rescues. Many days are spent roaming the countryside taking pictures of old rusty cars and trucks. And early mornings are spent photographing her cats and flowerbeds, all of which could appear in a new painting. Contacts through art shows have lead to her paintings being used on CocaCola trays, needlework kits, books, and greeting cards. She participates in 30+ art/craft shows yearly. David Chrzan Handmade earthenware English Style ocarinas (flutes). Decorated with oxides, underglazes, and clear and textured glazes. Each piece is fired three times and plays nine notes. JOBS.Online Athens TIRED OF WORKING LIKE A DOG? Peter Loose was born in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1963. His love of animals and nature led him to work as a naturalist for a Maryland state park and later for the Audubon Society. In 1986 he moved to Athens, Georgia to work at the Sandy Creek Nature Center. There he began creating whimsical sculptural musical instruments, birdhouses, and paintings. Peter lives on six acres with a menagerie of once-abandoned animals. The intricate painted surfaces of his work are often highly informed by the patterns he observes in nature – the VISIT skin of a reptile or the feathers of a bird. Peter and his wife, Sandy, have JOBS.OnlineAthens.com published two children’s books starring their rescue dog, Bongo. Enjoying the eclectic sound and collective hometown feel that grouping brought forth has caused Ferrelle to reassemble some form of that group throughout the years to work his more acoustic/folk material both live and in the studio. The group today is a true band consisting of David Van Wyk (cello), Adam Poulin (fiddle/violin), Taylor Sproull (drums/percussion) and Ferrelle (acoustic guitar/vocals). The WinterVillains are currently working on a record with grammy nominated producer John Keane. They will work throughout the year on the tentatively titled “Summer Hearts” and look to release the record in February 2016. Clay Leverett & The Chasers Clay is country to the bone. He’s opened for George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and Shooter Jennings. He fronts the barnstorming pure country band The Chasers. You can hear Clay on a couple of Drive By Truckers records and see him sing with Patterson Hood on the DVD Live at the 40 Watt. As a solo artist, Clay has opened for the ten-foottall and bulletproof Travis Tritt and the Queen of Country herself, Loretta Lynn. Clay never lets you down live. He’s got the voice, the guitar, and the songs. Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, he’ll see you down the road. dangfly! dangfly! Is a pop rock band based in Athens, Georgia. Adam Payne formed the group in 2010 after an extensive solo career and front man for the Adam Payne Band. Good Luck, Curiosity, released in 2013, was the group's first record and the same year, the band appeared on an AthFest music sampler. The band's current lineup includes original members Adam Payne (songwriter/lead vocals/guitar), Shawn Johnson (percussion), Jay Rodgers (bass), Adam Poulin (fiddle), Scotty Nicholson (keys/guitar) and Ben Whitener (trumpet). Jim White & Willow Martin Local Wintervillian Jim White will be performing with his daughter, the talented Willow Martin. WINTERVILLE MARIGOLD FESTIVAL 2015 Hog-Eyed Man 15 Musical Feast Matt Joiner Band Hog-Eyed Man is an oldtime duo based in Athens, GA that unearths tunes from the wilder side of Southern Appalachian music. Jason Cade (fiddle/banjo) and Rob McMaken (mandolin/ lap dulcimer) go into the attic to find music that has been largely forgotten, music from the preradio era when ghosts of Irish, Scottish, English, and American tunes co-mingled and echoed in the hollows of the Southern Appalachians. Fools Ball If you got on the music bus with the Matt Joiner Band, you would find guitar at the steering wheel, with the pedal to the floor. Relaxing in the first row, you would find the vocals. The keys would be keeping the ride alive, somewhere near the front. Bass would be taking in the scene in the middle and keeping the ride groovy and on time. The drums are the engine that keeps the bus rolling. Come see what kind of music we make together. Joiner has played to enthusiastic crowds at great venues around the South including: Georgia Theatre, 40 Watt, The Melting Point, AthFest, Hendershot's, Smiths Olde Bar and plenty of Hot Wing joints. He has also shared the stage with local acts like the Emily McCannon Band, John Keane, Radiolucent, Rollin' Home, Clay Leverett, The Rattlers, and national artists including Johnny Winter, Mother's Finest, Drivin' n' Cryin', Matt Schofield, and the legendary Geoff Achison. Buy a cd, learn the songs and come sing along at a show near you. FOOLS BALL is a brand new band fronted by David Nickel (Bloodkin) and includes John Neff, Jon Mills, Chris Cason, and Taylor Sproull. Playing mostly originals with a few obscure covers thrown in. Americana with a rock and roll edge. WIN with Winterville Be sure to check out all the great Winterville and Marigold Festival items at the souvenir booth. Deja Vu Deja Vu is a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tribute group formed by veteran record producer John Keane in the Spring of 2010. It is a supergroup of talented Athens musicians also including: Dodd Ferrelle, Rachel O'Neal, Tom Ryan, Deane Quinter, Tim White, and Scott Sanders. Says Keane, "I was profoundly influenced by this music in my early teens, and always thought it would be a blast to put together a vocal group to perform these songs. I hand picked some of the best local musicians to form Deja Vu. Everyone is very into the music and we've worked our tails off to get the vocal arrangements right." 16 WINTERVILLE MARIGOLD FESTIVAL 2015 Law OffiCes Of Rob McNiff LLC 370 Athens Road, Winterville 706.742.0001 Personal Injury • Criminal DUI • Bankruptcy • Debtor/Creditor Civil/Business • Wills/Probate Juvenile • Mediation Serving northeaSt georgia WINTERVILLE MARIGOLD FESTIVAL 2015 E T E G R T A S RAG N I A E M Professional Automotive Service & Repair Winterville, GA • 706 -742-2300 Proud Sponsor of the Winterville Marigold Festival Law OffiCes Of Rob McNiff LLC 370 Athens Road, Winterville 706.742.0001 Personal Injury • Criminal DUI • Bankruptcy • Debtor/Creditor Civil/Business • Wills/Probate Juvenile • Mediation Serving northeaSt georgia 17 18 WINTERVILLE MARIGOLD FESTIVAL 2015 Miss Marigold Scholarship Pageant April 25, 2015 Seney Stovall Chapel Photo caption: l to r: Brooke Fraysher, Hannah Anglin, and Madison Gabriel, Miss Marigold – Madison Gabriel Miss Marigold Runner-Up – True Foley Junior Miss Marigold – Brooke Fraysher Junior Miss Marigold Runner-Up – Emma Dowling Little Miss Marigold – Hannah Anglin Little Miss Marigold Runner-Up – Charlotte Thompson Little Miss Congeniality – Bliss Ferrelle Junior Miss Congeniality – Mikayla Oldham Miss Congeniality – Madison Gabriel Best Smile – Madison Gabriel Miss Ticket Sales – Gracie Lane Bray Athens Web Design Studio athenswebstudio.com WINTERVILLE MARIGOLD FESTIVAL 2015 Winterville City Attorney Albert L.
