Treasurer Chris Robinson reported a balance of $3,552.78 in the treasury and 68 members. Supervisor Peter Schwartz reported a few updates around town. 1) The notice to proceed with sidewalks has gone out. Construction is to start in two weeks, and will take 90-100 days to construct. 2) Each year, the County applies for additional grants for the Main Street project. In November, they applied for half a million dollars for the last chunk of money for phase one of the Main Street project. They were approved! They’ll now have almost $4,000,000 including the local matching funds. Bidding will occur this Fall, and construction will start one year from now. 3) Red Truck Bakery is coming to Marshall and will occupy both former Old Salem buildings. All their baking will occur here in Marshall, plus they will have a small retail café with about 35 seats. Red Truck Bakery is hoping to have their soft opening this July or August. President Ursula Baxley announced in place of School Board Member Duke Bland, that Claude Thompson has won the 40th Battle of the Books! Our first speaker of the night was Kevin MacDonald with Earth Village Education. The idea for Earth Village Education began by people a few years ago who felt that there was one root problem: our culture lacks respect and awareness for the natural world. This led them to form EVE with the mission to build community and renew the Earth. One of the owners of EVE has a 97 acre farm off Lake Daniel that EVE is using. Adult classes they plan to offer will be small, hands-on, and will be on the weekends. Topics will include soap and lotionmaking, and making fire by using sticks. Earth Village Education plans to offer four broad topics: 1) Primitive Arts, 2) Ecological Farming, 3) Contemporary Homesteading, and 4) Sustainable Architecture. Primitive arts are the knowledge and skills necessary for humans to live off the land. Ecological farming is growing really good food without damaging the earth. Think how cycles of air, water, etc., might interact with each other. Contemporary homesteading, or ‘selfreliance’ as he refers to it, teaches self-reliance skills. Kevin then shared a story of he and his sweetheart’s experimental time living in a cabin in the woods, relying on a spring for their water and solar panels for energy. Currently, they are working with the County to obtain special use exemptions. EVE will offer volunteer days for anyone who would like to help them, and they also plan to hold small, preliminary classes soon. For more, visit www.earthvillageeducation.org Hillaery Bogley, President and Founder of the M iddleburg H umane F oundation, was our second speaker of the night. Middleburg Humane Foundation has been a part of the community for 21 years. Hillaery is a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) and a humane investigator for Fauquier and Culpeper counties. MHF is a non-profit farm shelter on 4 acres on Whiting Road. Twenty-three acres from the Cunningham Farm property was donated to them, and they hope to receive approval from the County to build a new farm shelter facility. They also serve Culpeper, primarily Fauquier County. They have very helpful facilities and even a free rabies clinic coming on Saturday, May 9th from 10am – 3pm on site at 4094 Whiting Rd. If you would like to make a donation or learn more, visit www.middleburghumane.org or call 540-364-3272. Kay Reddit, Founder of Your Office Assistant, spoke about her brand new business. She grew up in Nashville, TN where her father played in the Grand Ole Opry. She ran a management consulting company for 27 years, has an MA and BBA in Economics from Memphis State University. Kay is new to Marshall but not to Fauquier, as she has been here for 20 years, mostly in Warrenton. She had a farm near Keith Rd but moved to Marshall once her husband passed 4 years ago. As Your Office Assistant, Kay helps with filing, client follow-up, inventory, research, mailings, spreadsheet input, financial paperwork, presentation preparation, and much more. She provides temporary staff support to fill in gaps so business owners are free from having to hire and train employees just for specific tasks or projects. Kay understands that, especially for small business owners, simply having some downtime or taking a vacation is next to impossible. Therefore, Kay is available to fill whatever roles are necessary so business owners may take time for themselves. As her brochure explains, Kay works on an hourly or project basis, and can work either from home or from the business space. Rates are based on project difficulty and complexity, and you pay only for the hours used. Contact Kay at 540-270-2603, email [email protected] or write to 8370 Salem Ave, Marshall, VA 20115. Our final speaker was 1 st Lt. Col. Turelli with the Fauquier County Sheriffs Dept. The department ran stats on Main St and Marshall for the period of January-April 8th of this year, and they came back very good. Whether you are a business or a resident in the Marshall area, you can help shape what happens in this community by continuing to be or becoming an MBRA member. If you would like to join or renew your membership, please complete this form and mail to: Treasurer - MBRA - P O Box 533 - Marshall, VA 20116 Name ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Business Name __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Address _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Phone (H) ___________________________________________________ (W) _______________________________________________ My $30 annual membership check is enclosed. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Signature Notes from MBRA Meeting 4/14/15 Continued During this period in Marshall, deputies performed 632 premise checks. There was only 1 vehicle theft and larceny on Main St. and only 2 larcenies elsewhere. These stats are very good; the Marshall community is safe and in a good place. Sgt. Turelli informed the group on different types of crime prevention. He said people are leaving their homes and cars unlocked, and their purses and wallets on the front seat. Many criminals give up if they do not find an unlocked car or home, so we need to make sure that we keep ours locked. Also, we ought to remove our garage door openers from our cars, so no one can break in and steal them. Identity theft and financial crimes are very bad and greatly increasing, and people are making it easy to be victims. We are more likely to become victims of financial crimes than breakins. Everyone has to take part in crime prevention. If we become a victim of financial crime, call the Fauquier Co. Sheriffs Dept. (540) 422-8600. Q&A time with Sgt. Turelli followed. As to the question of companies who protect identity, Col. Turelli urges everyone to pay to have all of our credit scores locked with all 3 credit reporting agencies. We can do that on our own, and it only costs around $10/month, and that is the best thing we can do to protect ourselves. We can then unlock them with our pin whenever we need to use them. Also, we can report fraudulent call numbers to the Sheriffs Department; they will always accept those reports. The climate of Fauquier schools is in a good place. National Night Out is indeed happening this year. Lord Fairfax Connector Trail’s 5th Anniversary In honor of Lord Fairfax Connector Trail’s 5th anniversary, the Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a “A Family Friendly Celebration” on Saturday, June 6, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge, and will take place at Lord Fairfax Connector Trail, Lower Parking Lot, 6480 College Street, Warrenton, VA 20187. This Free Family Friendly Celebration includes Ecological Pond Activity provided by VA Extension Office, Warrenton Police Barrel Train Rides, Bluegrass Music by The Virginia Bluebelles, Family Games, and Warrenton Bike Shop providing Helmet Fittings. The LFCC Connector Trail is approximately 1/3 of a mile long and adjoins the Stafford Farm Connector Trail, approximately 1.10 miles long. These trails form 1.5 miles of multi-use trail for bikers and hikers and will eventually connect to the Warrenton Branch Greenway. This is the start of a network of trails that will connect the Town of Warrenton to the Lord Fairfax Community College and to the planned Central Fauquier Sports Complex.
