Spring 2015 Massage Times Massage Therapy by Jackie King, LMT Cellulite Facts, Fiction and Potential Cures Wikipedia describes cellulite as the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue that manifests topographically as skin dimpling and nodularity, often on the pelvic region (specifically the buttocks), lower limbs and abdomen. Cellulite occurs in most postpubescent females and is also known as adiposis edematosis, dermopanniculosis deformans, status protrusus cutis, gynoid lipodystrophy and orange peel syndrome. The term “cellulite” was first used in the 1920s by Spa & Beauty services to promote their various products and services. In the 1960s, the term appeared in Vogue Magazine and soon became a common word. While many were claiming it to be a disorder, there are certainly many causes to this condition, and that it is more likely a natural part of the human body, rather than a disease. Cellulite sounds like a medical condition, but it is nothing more than normal fat beneath the skin. The fat appears bumpy because it pushes against connective tissue, causing the skin above it to pucker. There are several things that are potential causes of cellulite. • Poor diet, fad diet, dieting too hard or too much – Instead, practice a simple diet of organic fresh fruits and vegetables and clean meat (no hormones or chemicals). • Slow metabolism – You can increase your metabolism by eating many small meals multiple times a day, rather than three large meals. • Lack of physical activity – There are many very healthful, gentle exercises to increase your activity including: Qigong, yoga, Tai Chi, gardening and walking. • Hormonal changes – Estrogen may be the important hormone to initiate and aggravate cellulite, although there has been no reliable clinical evidence to support this theory. Other hormones linked to the development of cellulite include insulin, catecholamines, adrenaline and noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin. • Dehydration – a good rule to follow is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily, and to add in 8 ounces for every cup of coffee or alcoholic beverage you drink. • Total body fat: Healthy Body Fat for Men Healthy Body Fat for Women Age 20 - 39 8 - 19% Age 20 - 39 21 - 32% 40- 59 11 - 21% 40 - 59 23 - 33% 60 - 79 13 - 24% 60 - 79 24 - 35% • Thickness and color of your skin • Build up of toxins stored in fat cells – Being aware of what goes into your body is always important, just as an occasional body cleanse/detox is crucial. • Genetic factors – sex, race and predisposing factors. • A high-stress lifestyle – causes an increase in the level of catecholamines (fight or flight hormones). Cellulite is more common in women than in men, and if you have other family members who have cellulite, chances are that you too will have it. Having cellulite does not mean you are overweight. In fact, some thin people have cellulite as well. If you are overweight, however, losing some weight may help reduce the appearance of cellulite. … continued on page 2 Page 2 Massage Times … continued from page 1 Cellulite treatments: • • • • • • Creams – Said to dissolve fat and smooth the skin, they contain aminophylline, which is a bronchodilator, and used in the treatment of asthma to open obstructed airways. Liposuction – A surgical procedure to remove fat deposits. This however, removes deep fat, not cellulite, which lies just beneath the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that liposuction may actually worsen the appearance of cellulite creating more depressions in the skin. Mesotherapy – This technique was initially developed in Europe to relieve pain associated with inflammation of various skin conditions. It involves injecting substances such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes into the tissue just beneath the skin. Mesotherapy may break down fat and bring a slight improvement in the appearance of cellulite, but it also contains some risks including swelling, infection and irregular contours. Massage and Spa Treatments – Massage and spa treatments can only provide temporary improvements in the appearance of cellulite. They do not remove it. The temporary improvement is due to the short-lived removal of excess fluid. Laser Treatments – The FDA has cleared the use of a device that uses laser energy to treat cellulite. The manufacturer claims it melts fat under the skin, breaks up the fibrous bands, and even stimulates collagen production. Red and Infrared Light Emitting Diodes – A new and upcoming treatment that will emit specific wavelengths known to disrupt fat tissues, causing them to shrink. The procedure is combined with rollers and suctions to soften the fibrous bands of connective tissue that cause the dimpled appearance. I’m not sure about you, but I’m sure I won’t be trying any of the above mentioned treatments for cellulite any time soon. Most sound complicated, costly and even painful with some risks involved. I have tried the Petrochemical Weight-Loss with Essential Oils listed below, and have to say how easy and affective it is. Not only is it easy, I don’t have to worry about putting harmful chemicals into my body, or any type of costly surgical procedure that may not work anyway. The essential oils are pure, organic and therapeutic, and incorporating this routine into my daily practice makes me realize I’m actually doing something very special, as well as healthful for myself. Along with that comes the potential for cuts, scrapes and bug bites. Purification Essential Oil is more effective than using iodine or hydrogen peroxide for washing and cleansing wounds. It is also helpful in repelling ticks and mites. This is one oil that is a must in your medicine cabinet for your pets and for you.
