Credits/Contact Hours: CCHI and IMIA CEU credit approval in process Education Level: Intermediate to Advance Course Overview: The goal of this workshop is to improve the working experience of medical interpreters. During this interactive workshop participants will review basic brain anatomy and physiology associated with stress and resilience, including both the sources and consequences of occupational stress. There will also be a review of personal, professional and educational interventions to reduce occupational stress and to increase resilience. Participants will engage in individual and group exercises designed to increase positive coping skills and to reduce the brain and body’s stress reactions, and to improve well-being. Participants will leave this workshop energized, and armed with the knowledge and skills to make positive and brain-wise changes in their lives. Objectives:  To increase participants’ understanding of the physical changes in the brain and the consequences caused by chronic toxic stress.  To increase participants understanding of the consequences of physical changes in the brain and the consequences stimulated by positive coping methods.  To motivate participants to engage in self-advocacy and self-care by making changes in their personal, professional and academic lives to reduce their stress and enhance their resilience. About the Lead Trainer: Jessica Goldhirsch, MPH Jessica Goldhirsch, MPH has designed innovative pet, horticulture and activity therapy programming for hospitalized children and teens, managed an adolescent drama troupe teaching students about human sexuality and decision-making and taught juvenile defenders about HIV/AIDS. As training coordinator at Boston Medical Center, she taught hundreds of providers to work more effectively with face-to-face, telephone and video interpreters. She is currently participating in a movement to professionalize medical interpreting by improving training standards. She has drawn attention to the stress, burnout and vicarious trauma experienced by medical interpreters. She has served on the boards of the Forum on the Coordination of Interpreter Services and the MA Medical Interpreters Association. About Second Trainer: Leda Munoz Orians, CMI Leda Muñoz Orians has been part of the Interpreter Services Department at Boston Medical Center (BMC), since June, 2010. During her tenure at BMC, she became the hospital’s first nationally certified Spanish interpreter. Leda has extensive experience as both an interpreter and as a translator, working in a wide variety of hospitals including Cambridge Health Alliance, Lowell General Hospital and Lahey Clinic. Prior to becoming a professional medical interpreter, Ms. Orians worked as a project manager and research assistant at Tufts University and as a natural history guide in several regions of Latin America. Leda holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Universidad de Costa Rica. Certificates & Completion Requirements: Participants are expected to sign-in and out, attend the entire program, and complete an evaluation. Participants will not receive a certificate of completion until payment has been received. If the certificate cannot be presented at the event, the participant will be mailed the certificate.
