These are binomials (binomial means two terms) 2 – 4x 6x – 8 2x2 - 5 2 – 4x The two is a whole number and the 4x is a variable with a coefficient of 4. 4x is the same as 4 times x. You CANNOT Add or Subtract UNLIKE terms You CAN Multiply or Divide UNLIKE terms You CANNOT Add or Subtract the Coefficient from a Variable You CAN Multiply or Divide the Coefficient from a Variable Like & Unlike Terms Page 1 of 2 Like Terms & Unlike Terms For an equation 2y – 8x = 16 where you want y by itself for slope intercept form y = mx + b the next step is: 2y – 8x + 8x = 16 + 8x You can only add or subtract here 2y – 8x = 16 So 2y – 8x + 8x = 16 + 8x leaves you with: 2y = 16 + 8x NOW you can divide the 2 from the y AND from the terms on the other side of the equation. You must keep an equation balanced. Whatever you do to one side you must do to the other side. 2y = 16 + 8x 2 2 2/2 = 1 and 1y is just equal to y 16/2 = 8 and 8x/2 is 4x y = 8 + 4x is the final answer. You can change the 8 + 4x to 4x + 8 by the commutative property for addition to get the exact y = mx + b slope intercept form. y = 4x + 8 Like & Unlike Terms Page 2 of 2
