Why Treat Condensate
The power industry operates in an environment of increasingly stringent
boiler feed water requirements. Couple this with exploding energy costs
and one finds boiler blow down to be the least desirable way of maintaining
proper boiler water quality.
As a cost effective alternative to boiler blow down one needs to look no
further than simple sodium cycle condensate polishing. It’s the smart
choice when looking for a means to control corrosion transport and the ill
effects of condenser in-leakage. Particularly pronounced are the operating
savings realized relative to chemical and energy consumption. Relying on
proven ion exchange technology condensate polishers are also simple to
operate and maintain.
Let Res-Kem work up the actual savings available by polishing your dirty
condensate. The payback is both swift and dramatic.

Dual 36” Diameter Dealkalizer System with Optional
PVC Diaphragm Valves and Piping
Why use an Industrial Water Dealkalizer?
Reduce Blowdown - High alkalinity promotes boiler foaming and carryover
and causes high amounts of boiler blowoff. A dealkalizer can increase the
cycles of concentrations, reducing blowdown and lowering operating costs.
Reduce Chemical Use – Reducing blowdown by dealkalization keeps the
water treatment chemicals in the boiler longer, thus minimizing the amount
of chemicals required for efficient, non-corrosive operation.
Reduce Return Line Corrosion – Carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinities
are decomposed by heat in boiler water, releasing CO2 into the steam.
CO2 combines with the condensed steam in process equipment and return
lines to form carbonic acid, H2CO3. This lowers the pH of the condensate
returns and results in corrosive attack on the equipment and piping.
Reduce Chemical Contamination – Pharmaceutical, food, dairy, and
beverage plants are not permitted to use the amount of chemicals required
to properly treat

Recirculation Loop Repressurization and Treatment Module
Why use an Ultra Pure Water System?
Ultra pure water treatment is required in many industries, applications, and
processes. Res-Kem offers a series of pre-assembled, modular systems
for the production of a continuous supply of high purity deionized water.
These pre-packaged ultra high purity water systems combine the operation
of several water purification processes within each skid mounted assembly.
Among the many applications for ultra pure water are:




Nanotechnology products
Laboratories
Semiconductor Fabrication
Medical Device Production




Pharmaceutical Plants
Electronic Products
Alloy metal fabrication
Aerospace
MODULAR ULTRAPURE WATER SYSTEMS
Prefiltration Module
All systems require a filter to treat all of the water entering the water treatment system. Res-Kem selected
two options for prefiltration, cartridge filtration and multi-media filtration. A prefilter will remove any large
suspended particles and solids that can damage downstream equipment. A cartridge prefilter is generally
the lowest installed capital cost, but the operating cost can be very high if there is poor quality inlet water.
A multi-media filter has a slightly higher capital cost, but virtually no operating costs. The system simply
backwashes on an as-needed basis.
Water Softener Module
A water softener should be installed when the inlet water hardness is greater than 50
ppm or 3 grains/gallon. The industrial water softener is particularly important in systems
with a Reverse Osmosis, RO, system. Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, and Iron can
precipitate within the flow passages of the RO membrane. A water softener will reduce
downtime required for membrane cleaning, increase membrane life, and virtually
eliminate unplanned system shutdowns.
Two configurations are used. When continuous flow is required, a dual tank softener will be required. If
your plant operates 1-2 shifts per day, a properly sized, single tank softener is fine.
Activated Carbon Filtration Module
If your system has an RO and is on city water, an activated carbon filter is required to
remove the chlorine or chloramine used to protect the population from harmful bacteria.
If you do not remove the chlorine or chloramine, the life of your RO will be severely
shortened. Depending upon the level of either oxidant, a noticeable degradation in RO
membrane rejection will happen in as soon as a few months. Even if your water does
not have chlorine or chloramine, carbon filtration is still highly recommended to remove
organics in the feed water which can foul the membranes.
Two carbon filtration modules are offered by Res-Kem. The simplest option is to use a carbon exchange
service like our sister company General Water Services provides in the mid-Atlantic region. The other
choice is to install a simple backwashable activated carbon filter. The backwashing step will increase the
life of the carbon by removing suspended material from the top of the bed where it may accumulate. The
tradeoff between the two options is the exchange carbon involves a smaller capital investment, but a
higher operating expense. The backwashable activated carbon system has a nominally higher capital
cost requires a drain line connection, and carbon replacement every 2-4 years.
Reverse Osmosis System Module
The heart of a Res-Kem modular water treatment system is the RO system. The RO
system removes 95 - 98% of the feedwater ions. Since an RO membrane acts as a
barrier, particles and bacteria will be removed. While an RO is a great tool to produce
consistently high quality water, it is particularly susceptible to foulants and oxidants. To
reduce the potential for the damage, Res-Kem has the pretreatment modules of
filtration, softener, and/or carbon filtration described above.
An RO system performs best and most efficiently when it operates nearly continuously.
Also, after an RO system, a storage tank is highly recommended. The level in this tank
will turn on and off the RO system.

MODULAR ULTRAPURE WATER SYSTEMS
The standard RO systems have between 1 and 6 RO membranes. These systems operate at a recovery
of 95% and higher depending upon the inlet water quality. To keep the RO system at or near continuous
operation, the number of elements should be tailored to the typical water demand downstream of the RO
system.
Post RO Demineralization Module
As the water quality requirements increase, a deionization process should be added to the RO permeate
line before the water enters the RO/Recirculation loop storage tank. Doing this will increase the "makeup"
water resistivity and quality. The deionization process used is called exchange deionization. A service DI
tank provider, like General Water, will deliver regenerated mixed bed resin in pressure vessels or tanks,
connect the tanks into the water treatment system, and remove the used or exhausted tanks of resin.
After the tanks are brought back to the service company, the resins are recycled by regenerating it in a
regeneration facility.
RO/Recirculation Loop Storage Tank Module
Almost without exception, a properly designed recirculation loop and
storage tank will substantially improve the operation and reduce the
capital cost of the entire treatment system. A storage tank and
recirculation loop pump will easily handle rapid and large surges in
water demand. As stated above, an RO is designed for relatively
constant flow rate. Without a tank, the only option is to size the RO,
and all equipment ahead of it, for the instantaneous demand.
For example, if the instantaneous flow rate of your process is five times greater than the average flow
rate, your prefiltration, softener, carbon filter, and RO will all have to be about four times larger than
equipment sized for the lower, average flow rate. Res-Kem finds the capital expenditure will be
dramatically higher when you have to upsize the equipment versus adding the cost of a tank.
Distribution Loop Module
The final module of the of the water treatment system is the repressurization and final
treatment before the water enters the recirculation loop. This module includes the
recirculation loop pump, two service DI mixed beds tanks in series, an ultraviolet unit,
and a final filter. A resistivity monitor and sample ports insure the correct water quality
is going to your manufacturing process.
Using all of the treatment modules will achieve the highest water quality. For less
critical water quality requirements, fewer modules will be necessary to achieve the
water quality for your process.

Res-Kem FT-Series Water Softeners are single or dual tank, time
clock initiated systems designed for commercial and light industrial
applications to remove calcium and magnesium hardness from your
water. Fully automatic, brass constructed, multi-port valves with
adjustable regeneration cycles control Res-Kem FT-Series
Softeners.
Res-Kem FT Softeners are designed to provide continuous soft
water 24 hours per day for dual units. Single units are a costeffective way to provide soft water where demand is intermittent.
For either design, the only operator attention needed is to put salt in
the brine tank.
Economical and efficient, the heart of the Res-Kem FT-Series Water
Softener is the Fleck 2750, 2850, and 2900, all brass control valve.
With a meter initiated, twin tank alternating design, one tank is in
service while the second is held in stand-by. These rugged control
valves provide a low maintenance, high flow rate, and quality
system able to meet the most demanding needs.
Why use a Water Softener?
Calcium and magnesium are hard
scale forming minerals that build up on
piping, heat exchangers, water
heaters, boilers, and any steam
equipment. This buildup results in
costly repairs, increased energy
consumption, plugged heat
exchangers and boiler tubes. Also,
hardness greatly reduces the service
life of linens, clothing, appliances, and
plumbing fixtures.
The following facilities are examples of
ideal applications for water softening
equipment:

Res-Kem DT Softeners are available in a wide range of selfcontained packages configured in dual tank, meter demand systems
to remove calcium and magnesium hardness from your water. ResKem DT Softeners are designed for light commercial and industrial
water softening applications. These automated units are designed
to provide continuous soft water 24 hours per day. The only
operator attention needed is to put salt in the brine tank.
Economical and efficient, the heart
of the Res-Kem DT Softener is the
9000, 9001, or 9500 Series
Econominder all brass control valve.
With a meter initiated, twin tank
alternating design, one tank is in
service while the second is held in
stand-by. These rugged control
valves provide a low maintenance,
high flow rate, and quality system
able to meet the most demanding
needs. A lower cost option is a ResKem DT Softener based upon the
9100 and 9101 Series non-metallic
valves.

Why use a Water Softener?
Calcium and magnesium are hard scale forming minerals that build up on
piping, heat exchangers, water heaters, boilers, and any steam equipment.
This buildup results in costly repairs, increased energy consumption,
plugged heat exchangers and boiler tubes. Also, hardness greatly reduces
the service life of linens, clothing, appliances, and plumbing fixtures.
The following facilities are examples of ideal applications for water
softening equipment:
 Apartments/Condominiums
 Office Complexes
 Car Washes
 Hospitals
 Laundries
 Institutions
 Light Manufacturing Plants
 Large Homes
 Boiler Pretreatment

The Res-Kem XL Series of Reverse Osmosis systems is truly an
Engineered System. From pretreatment through tank level and post
treatment portable DI control, the XL RO Series becomes a
"System" by simply activating pre-engineered standard features.
Engineering novel features like Quick Link™ Technology eliminates
the need for many stand alone controllers for pH, ORP and
resistivity instrumentation. The purchase of optional cells is the only
requirement. Also, several costly control panels are eliminated for
pretreatment tanks and pump control. Field wiring is replaced by low
voltage quick link connections.
XL-4L-5H Reverse Osmosis System Produces 100 gpm
The Quick Link Technology puts the “System” in RO System. Quick
Link Technology was engineered to provide a simple method of
control and connection for electrical field devices that are required to
make an RO "System" operate seamlessly as a system. Field
devices include pretreatment tanks, booster and break tank pumps,
chemical feed, pH, ORP, bypass and auxiliary make-up valves, level
control, distribution pumps, portable exchange DI bank switching
and rinse-up, high quality resistivity cells with control.
Quick Link Technology provides:
 Simplicity- System field devices easily "plug and play" into
main panel.
 Flexibility - User is prompted to select system devices and
options via simple touch screens.
 Cost Savings - Quick Link Technology eliminates the need
for many stand alone components like pH, ORP and
resistivity instrumentation. The purchase of optional cells is
the only requirement. Also, several costly control panels are
eliminated for pretreatment tanks and pump control. Field
wiring is replaced by low voltage quick link connections.

Res-Kem RO systems are engineered with flexibility in mind. Since
every water treatment plant is different, a simple method to connect
and control an RO system must be part of the design. Res-Kem RO
systems will integrate into a complete water treatment system
without expensive custom field engineering and programming.
Often, RO systems are merely connected between two different
pieces of existing equipment and expected to function seamlessly.
There are so many different pieces of equipment that can be before
and after an RO system. Res-Kem RO systems are designed to
interoperate with properly equipped pretreatment filters and
softeners, booster pumps, break tank pumps, chemical feed, pH
ORP, bypass valves, auxiliary makeup valves, level control,
distribution pumps, portable exchange DI bank switching, rinse up,
resistivity cells, and controls.
Model RC4-5-55
6 gpm (8,640 GPD) unit
These devices easily plug into the main panel. Users can select
system devices and options via simple touch screen entries. The
design eliminates the need for many stand-alone electrical panels
for components like pH, ORP, and resistivity instruments. Purchase
only the cells you need and plug in. Also, costly control panels can
be eliminated from pretreatment softeners, filters, and pump control.

 Protects Downstream Pumps &
Equipment From Damage
 Prevents Loss of Media During

 Materials Selected to Maintain
Water Quality and Long Service
A resin trap is a simple, inexpensive protective sieving device to
insure the ion exchange resin or other filtration media does not
leave the water treatment equipment where it belongs, and travel
downstream where it doesn’t belong. Install a resin trap. Like
insurance, do not wait until catastrophe strikes to see the value.
Why You Need a Resin Trap
Many water treatment processes use small granular, plastic,
powdered, pelletized and/or crystalline media in a pressure vessel.
Over the years, complex screens, slotted pipes, perforated plates,
molded devices, etc. have been engineered to keep the media in
the vessel. Through corrosion, chemical attack, thermal damage,
rapid flow changes, system age and/or water hammer, these
distribution systems will be damaged.
When the distribution systems are damaged, the ion exchange resin
or other media will get into the water distribution system
contaminating and/or destroying downstream RO membranes,
expensive membrane filters, pumps, tanks, piping, processes and
any product touched by this contaminated water.
What Is A Resin Trap?
A resin trap, designed and fabricated by Res-Kem, is a very simple
sieving device using a stainless steel wedge-wire screen. The slots
are small enough to retain upstream ion exchange resins or other
filtration media. The number and size of the openings are designed
to keep the pressure drop to a ∆P=2 psi at the rated flow rate. A
clear sleeve will visually indicate whether there is an upstream
problem. A small ball valve allows for recycling of resin or media
after the problem has been repaired.
Since the slots in the wedge wire are 0.010 inches, 254 microns, a
resin trap protects, but does not replace, downstream cartridge
filters, bag filters, membrane filters, etc. which generally have a
much lower micron rating.
Where Should You Install a Resin Trap?
A resin trap should be installed in the product water line of most
resin and media based water treatment equipment like:
Softeners
Demineralizers
Portable DI Tanks
RT40-F Resin Trap
Dealkalizers
Carbon Filters
Greensand Filters
Condensate Polishers
Sand Filters
Multi-Media Filters
A resin trap should be considered in the backwash lines of most ion
exchange and carbon systems because temperature related flow
changes can cause these expensive materials to be sent down the
drain.
