Research shows that kids who read for pleasure during the summer avoid the “summer slide” and perform better when they get back to school than those who took time off. Check out the summer reading assignments and book recommendations from our literacy staff: 6th Grade Summer Reading Homework 7th Grade Summer Reading Homework 8th Grade Summer Reading Homework For additional support, we will be holding optional gatherings over the summer at two Denver Public Library branches so that students can find good books and meet new friends. We will meet at the Park Hill branch at 4705 E. Montview on Mondays from 10:00am. to noon, and we will meet at the Sam Gary (Stapleton) branch at 2961 Roslyn Street on Fridays from 10:00am to noon. The Denver Public Library’s summer reading program is a great motivator as well. If you have any questions or feel that your student needs special accommodations or extensions for this assignment, please contact language arts teacher and literacy specialist Anne Walker at [email protected]. CONGRATS TO BASEBALL TEAM - CITY CHAMPS! The McAuliffe baseball team capped off an amazing season last week by winning a pair of playoff games en route to the City Championship. After beating Hamilton in the quarterfinals on Wednesday 11-1, allowing only one hit, the Sun Devils played Grant on Thursday in the semifinals. Joe Lenhart and Tommy Cummings combined for a perfect game over 3 innings, leading the Sun Devils to a 14-0 victory. Jacob Vogul and Will Knowles led the Sun Devil batters. On Friday, the Sun Devils took on undefeated Hill (now 8-1) at JFK High School for the DPS Championship. Jacob Thompsen and Joe Lenhart combined for a 5 inning no-hit shutout as the Sun Devils completed the undefeated season at 12-0, winning 10-0. The Sun Devils jumped out to a 4-0 first inning start, led by a Quinten Crum mammoth 2-run home run, and were never threatened the rest of the way. Other big bats were Grant Stanwood (3 hits), Jack Michalek (3 hits) and Sam Costain (2 hits). The Sun Devils finished 12-0, winning via shutout 7 times. They allowed only 7 runs all season, scoring 119 runs in the process. In the playoffs alone, they outscored their opponents 35-1. Not once did they trail in a game all season. What an incredible team. http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 3 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM ALICE IN WONDERLAND IS A HIT! THANKS FOR COMING TO SPRING FINE ARTS NIGHT A huge shout out and thank you to all in our McAuliffe community for organizing and joining us at the Spring Fine Arts Night last Thursday! The Band, Orchestra, and Choir students wowed the audience with such strong performances, and the Visual Art students set the gallery-goers on a creative, winding journey around the first floor and even up to the second floor with impressive artworks! Thank you for engaging with and supporting our artists! Of special note, this Fine Arts Night was the first in McAuliffe's history in which artwork was sold – the 8th graders put their prints up for sale, as a means of raising money for Project Worthmore (a non-profit that works with and serves refugees in the city of Denver). I am proud to announce that we have raised a total of http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 5 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM $388.00 that will be donated to PWM to benefit their programs that serve refugees in our neighborhoods. Students designed their own experiments based on their interest in a physical science concept. Some project questions included, "How does electrolysis affect the magnetism of nail?" and "How does the amount of sugar in ice cream affect its freezing point?" Students presented their results to peers, teachers and parents. http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 6 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM WELCOME TO THE MCAULIFFE EAGLE GARDEN This past weekend, under the direction of 8th grader Jack Seward, more than 20 volunteers set out on a mission to build a new garden for the school. With a budget of more than $5,000, the team set out to work over the course of 4 days, 6 brick planters were built, 6 tons of rock were moved, and new tomato plants were planted. We could not have accomplished this without the help of the community and Denver Boy Scout Troop 62. Thanks to all our parent and staff volunteers, including Sarah Frederick, Carla Frenzel and David Juliano and Kurt Dennis. SAT/ACT EXCELLENCE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL Becky Middleton and other teachers have encouraged McAuliffe GT students to apply to the academic talent search programs of some of our nation's top universities. Students must score in the top 5% of a standardized test to be eligible to apply, and the application process to these university programs involves taking the SAT or ACT test. Qualifying scores not only result in recognition and awards but also enable these students to take university classes during the summer throughout their middle and high school years. Last year, students who qualified for the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) 7th grade talent search included Nick Gerrans, Tucker Ezrine, Paola Kwan, and and Andrew Hageman, who was recognized at a ceremony at Duke University. McAuliffe is very proud again this year of the results of students participating in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program and the Duke TIP. This year, six 7th graders participated in the Duke TIP program include Carly Eberhart, Max Epperson, William Snodgrass, Christopher Tsai, Aidan Wood and Ailie Wood. Ailie and Max both received State recognition, meaning that they scored at or above the state average of recent high school graduates in at least one category of the ACT or SAT. Will, Chris and Aidan not only received State recognition but they all received Grand Recognition, which means they scored at or above 90% of recent high school graduates in at least one category or in the top 3% of all students participating in the talent search. These three were invited to attend a special ceremony at Duke University. Aidan and Ailie also both took the ACT through the Northwestern University Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS). We also had one student participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program this year as a 6th grader! Eric Fisher took the advanced SCAT tests and his scores earned him an invitation to an awards ceremony at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Information about all the above programs, including Colorado School of Mines and Stanford, will be provided for interested families this fall. STUDENT WINS POETRY CONTEST Congratulations to 6th grader Mayan Caplan, who won first place in her age category in the Colorado Humanities annual River of Words poetry contest. A separate one of her poems was also selected as a finalist in the National contest. Her work will be published in the contest anthology, and she was recognized http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 8 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM along with the other Colorado winners at the Colorado Humanities' award ceremony on May 13th at the downtown library. 2015-2016 MCAULIFFE FAMILY HANDBOOK For our new and returning families at McAuliffe, please read our 2015-2016 Family Handbook here. Thanks so much in advance for helping to make McAuliffe the supportive and generous community it is! If you have any questions, please contact Kim Ezrine at [email protected]. Help us keep the McAuliffe food pantry running this summer to help feed families in need. Food and supplies can be donated at any time, beginning NOW! Please see this link to get involved in this important work. Donate uniforms, backpacks, and school supplies. In addition to short and long sleeve shirts, gym uniforms, track suits, and sweatshirts, we always need khaki or black pants and shorts and sturdy backpacks! There are large collection bins in the lobby of McAuliffe through the end of the year. We are also happy to accept unused school supplies in the same collection bins. ART EXHIBITION - BRINGING BACK THE ARTS Last Friday 7th grade artists Karsen Kinning, Grace Staberg and Zoe McCafferty participated in a district wide exhibition titled, “Bringing Back the Arts”. Two hundred and fifty students from around the district submitted artwork encompassing the theme “We Are All Denver”. Zoe McCafferty won 2nd place in the middle school division for her piece titled, “The Blindness of Beauty”, pictured below. Congratulations to each of the artists for their efforts in the show and congrats to Zoe on her 2nd place finish! http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 9 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM COMMUNITY RESOURCE MENTOR'S PROJECT This year, through the Community Resource Mentor’s Project, four McAuliffe students were able to work with academic mentors to explore a career field in which they are interested. They learned valuable information about possible future careers, and they really put a lot of work into it. Be sure to ask them more about their experiences when you see them. Hans Gaensbauer worked with a veterinarian through the Morris Animal Foundation, which has been doing a national study on the causes of cancer in golden retrievers. Some of his work involved plotting literally millions of data points. Lindsey Weyant was mentored by a published author. During her work, she wrote a mystery entitled “Cupcakes and a Cadaver” which she taped and presented for her class. She was able to incorporate six suspects and everyone had an alibi…hhhmmm… Piolet Jaech’s mentor took her for a swim, literally, in the Denver Aquarium, with eels, and turtles and stingrays, oh my! Her research project focused on the stingray, and getting to see it up close was quite a treat. Devon Rutledge’s mentor was from Ribbit Consulting. While working with his mentor, Devon created a 3-D Tic-Tac-Toe program in Java that involved writing over 2,000 lines of code. His meetings really were like a job with objectives, working on deliverables, scope and a timeline. Wow! http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 10 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM LIBRARY CARDS AND MORE DURING REGISTRATION During registration at McAuliffe during the next two weeks (see dates below), we're offering some resources for students and families. Check them out below! Students and family members can sign up for Denver Public Library cards! Library clerks from the Park Hill branch will be on site to help register people. Please include your student’s first and last name as well as student number if possible. All students are invited to come to the Big Apple - you do not need to be in drama class. More information needed? Contact Jennifer Carabetta at [email protected]. HOW TO FOLLOW WHAT YOUR STUDENT IS DOING IN CLASS If you have not yet created your Parent account on Edmodo (which is different from the Parent Portal account with DPS) and connected to your student using their unique 'parent code', below are instructions for how to do this. The process to create an account and specify your desired settings takes about two minutes and does not need to be redone for as many years as your student uses their Edmodo account. This information is also on our Parent Communication page. 1. Get your student's unique 'parent code' Ask your student to let you know their unique ‘parent code’, located on the home page of their Edmodo account. This same ‘parent code’ can be used by multiple parents but is unique to the student. Codes are always lowercase and may include both letters and numbers. 2. Create your parent account. On a laptop or desktop computer, go to dpsk12.edmodo.com. Click “I’m a parent”, input the ‘parent code’, add your name, email address, desired password and other account information. http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=e5456d139d01600542ee5a77e&id=5709c020e9&e=e04ce81853 Page 13 of 18 McAuliffe School News - May 21, 2015 5/21/15, 9:37 AM 3. Verify your parent account (if necessary). Edmodo may ask you to verify your email address in a separate message; please follow the links and instructions to carry out this step and complete the setup process. 4. Specify your desired account communications settings. Want to receive teacher messages by email or text? When logged into your parent account, click on ‘Account’ in the upper right corner. You can check your email address or even update to a new email address here. Then click on ‘Email and Text Updates’ and specify if you would like Edmodo notifications to come to you via email or text, and choose which types of notifications you want to receive; we recommend starting with at least ‘New Alerts’, ‘Notes’ and ‘Assignments’. Then save your settings. (If you decide you would like to receive less information, deselect the options you don’t want to receive.) 5. Have another student using Edmodo? If you have another child who also uses Edmodo, you may click on ‘Add a student’ and input the ‘parent code’ that is unique to that child. 6. Don't need to log back into Edmodo -- just read your email or text messages. Once your parent account is set up, you can view this activity within your Edmodo parent account, but most of the time you'll simply read the notifications that are sent to you by your chosen method (text or email). Anytime you want to change your settings or update your contact information, log into your parent account to make those changes. Otherwise, once set up, Edmodo is meant to run on autopilot so that you can simply view the email or text notifications that come to you. BUS BULLETIN: TRANSPORTATION NOTIFICATION SYSTEM NEXT YEAR Beginning next school year, DPS Transportation Services will implement a new notification system called Bus Bulletin. Through Bus Bulletin, the transportation department will communicate time-sensitive information via text message, voice message and email to district employees, transportation staff, parents and school leaders. Parents will receive emails and/or text and voice messages when their child’s bus is more than 10 minutes late. Users will also be notified of the specific reason for the delay, such as schedule changes, weather, accidents, etc. There is no cost for this service. Parents will receive notification on service delays via text message, phone call or email. Schools will receive notification on bus delays via phone call or email. All contact information is stored securely and will not be shared or sold. Information on this new service will be sent to families in the transportation department’s annual mailing prior to the beginning of the school year. More information can be found at Transportation.DPSk12.org.
