Art Exploration Camp (ages 8 -­10)
Childrens' art camps will involve hands-on art exploration
in a fun and interactive environment to explore various
materials and mediums for youth ages 8-10. Each camp
throughout the week will use techniques learned to
assemble their very own artist book. Saturday workshops
will focus on creating handmade lumineres, potting vessels and mixed media assemblage, creating a functional

Spring into Action Kids Create
Students explore styles and create a variety of works of

Three Dimensional Painting
Emphasis will be placed on the discovery of sculptural
concepts through the construction of a series of sculpture projects using various materials such as wood,
cardboard,paper mâché, and mixed media. students will
explore color applications and painting techniques as it
relates to a three dimensional surface while developing
a better understanding of tools and materials. Taught by
Renee Balfour.

Drawing and painting
This class will study basic drawing concepts that will
be applied to creating strong compositions in painting.

Really BIG Drawing (Ages 13-18)
Let’s experiment with some new drawing materials as
well as some of your favorites … but on a really larger
scale that you might get to work on at home or school.
Classes will be held in the Starnes Classroom at the McGuffey Art Center. For older (High School aged) Teens Cost

Teens Screen (Ages 12 & up)
This is an intensive workshop week for teenagers introducing them to the artistic potential of silk screen
printing. Students will turn their own original designs into
prints on both fabric (t-shirts) and paper. Students will
leave with a good grasp on this technically challenging

Watercolor for Beginners
I want to free my students to explore their own creativity
by teaching the technical process of painting in watercolor
including color theory, value, composition, materials and
the endless possibilities that this rich and vibrant medium
offers. (drybrush, wet-in-wet, glazing, masking, salt, textures
etc.) You can paint from very controlled and detailed, to very
loose and impressionistic. Designed for complete beginners to experienced students wanting to hone their skills,
this class will give you the opportunity to acquire valuable
experience in a relaxed studio atmosphere with time for

Drawing for Chickens
This is a class for "non-artists" who are scared to take a
drawing class or have taken a class that went too fast for
them. The teacher had to also learn to draw, so she knows
not to hover over you. The class atmosphere is non-critical

Watercolor, Basics & Beyond
Discover many of the simple and easy techniques of traditional and contemporary watercolor painting. Beginners will

Jean's Gutsy Abstract Oil Painting Class
This class is about process, about not quitting or giving
up on a painting that is going through an "ugly" stage. The
teacher will work with you individually to help you find your
own voice, your own way of exploring color, texture and
paint with knives and brushes if you want. Totally intuitive,
inventive, non-academic and addictive! Fun, supportive
atmosphere. We handle your inner critic, too! Supplies are

Still Life Painting in Oil
Students will learn to see composition in terms of gesture,
rhythm and color relationships that sing. Working with
a large central still life, participants will reduce images
to their simplest terms (shape, value and color), while
looking for the surprising and unexpected. We will focus
on what the eye sees rather than what our minds tell
us about what is seen. For oil and acrylic painters. Class

Botanical Watercolor
This six week watercolor painting class (please select
either the morning or evening session) will help take you
through the process of drawing and composing a botanical painting using spring blooming flowers as the subject
matter. You will learn watercolor techniques including detailed brush control and color mixing. There is a minimum

Life Drawing Groups
Open to the public as a part of its on-going service to the
community of Charlottesville and the surrounding counties. There is no instruction and no commitment to continue to come consistently (although you WILL want to)
and the only requirements are a desire to draw from the
live model and $10 cash (correct change, please) which
pays the model fee. Bring your own drawing materials
and ask for a parking permit at the office.

Handbuilding with Clay: pottery, tiles and
