By this date (D+2), III AC elements had reached objectives thought originally to require 11 days to take. 5 April 1947: Five Marine guards were killed and eight wounded when attacked by Communist Chinese raiders near the Hsin Ho ammunition depot in Northern China. This last major clash between Marines of the 1st Marine Division and Communist forces occurred shortly after withdrawal and redeployment plans from China were issued for the 1st Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing on 1 April. 10 April 1959: Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. was named as one of the original seven Project Mercury astronauts selected for space training. The seven astronauts, all volunteers, were selected by NASA from an initial group of 110 leading military test pilots. Three years later, on 20 February 1962, Col Glenn would become the first American to orbit the Earth. 12-13 April 1918: Marines of the 4th Brigade suffered their first gas attack on the night and early morning hours of 12-13 April when the Germans bombarded the 74th Company, 6th Marines near Verdun with mustard gas. Nine Marine officers and 305 enlisted Marines were gassed and evacuated, and 30 Marines died from the effects of the gas shells which hit in the middle of the reserve area cantonments in which they were sleeping. 15 April 1962: Marine Corps operational involvement in the Vietnam War began on Palm Sunday when HMM-362 with its Sikorsky UH-34s arrived at Soc called "Shufly" and its first operational employment involved lifting Vietnamese troops into battle. 18 April 1983: One Marine Security Guard was killed and seven were wounded when a large car bomb exploded just outside the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Lance Corporal Robert McMaugh was standing guard at Post 1, just inside the front entrance when the bomb exploded outside the door. The explosion killed 61 people including 17 Americans. LCpl McMaugh was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on 26 April. 21 April 1951: Marine carrier-based airplanes made their first aerial contact with enemy planes over the Korean front lines. Captain Philip C. Delong shot down two YAK fighters and 1st Lieutenant Harold D. Daigh destroyed one more and damaged another in the heavily defended Pyongyang-Chinnanpo area. Both pilots were with VMF-312 flying from the USS Bataan. 27 April 1805: First Lieutenant Presley N. O'Bannon, who with seven other Marines was part of a force of Greeks and Arabs led by American Consul William Eaton, raised the United States flag for the first time over a conquered fortress of the Old World at Derne, a stronghold of the Tripolitan pirates. Two Marines were killed and one wounded in the assault on the walled city. 28 April 1993: The last A-6E Intruder departed from Marine Corps service. Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 332 transferred the last Marine A-6E to St. Augustine, Florida, and prepared for the squadron's transition to the F/A-18D and eventual movement from Cherry Point to Beaufort, South Carolina. https://www.mcu.usmc.mil/historydivision/Pages/This%20Month%20in%20History/april.aspx McHenry County MCL#1009 Newsletter Page 6 of 11 MCHENRY COUNTY DETACHMENT #1009 NEWSLETTER April 1st Landing on Okinawa From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg,[9] was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War of World War II.[10][11] The 82-day-long battle lasted from early April until mid-June 1945. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were approaching Japan, and planned to use Okinawa, a large island only 340 mi (550 km) away from mainland Japan, as a base for air operations on the planned invasion of Japanese mainland (coded Operation Downfall). Four divisions of the U.S. 10th Army (the 7th, 27th, 77th, and 96th) and two Marine Divisions (the 1st and 6th) fought on the island. Their invasion was supported by naval, amphibious, and tactical air forces. The divisions landed on 1 April 1945 as part of the III Amphibious Corps. Their initial mission was, the northern half of the island. The battle has been referred to as the "typhoon of steel" in English, and tetsu no ame ("rain of steel") or tetsu no bōfū ("violent wind of steel") in Japanese.[12][13][14] The nicknames refer to the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of kamikaze attacks from the Japanese defenders, and to the sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Okinawa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Marine_Division_(United_States) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6th_Marine_Division_(United_States) The Anthem Veterans Memorial, located in ACC Community Park in Anthem, AZ 41703 N. Gavilan Peak Pkwy Anthem, AZ 85086 This monument is dedicated to honor the service and sacrifice of our country’s armed forces. This pillar of pride provides a place of honor and reflection for veterans, their family and friends, and those who desire to show their respects to those service men and women who have and continue to courageously serve our county. Five Pillar Significance The five pillars represent the unity of the five branches of the United States military serving steadfast together. They are staggered in size with their appropriate military seal placements on each pillar based upon the Department of Defense prescribed precedence. During the February 2015 monthly meeting I proposed hosting a breakfast, which was unanimously approved, for new Marine Corps poolees (individuals who are waiting to attend recruit training) in the McHenry County area. This is not a new idea to the Detachment. More than 8-10 years ago, the Detachment hosted a breakfast for poolees. Tentatively, we are looking at 0800, Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the McHenry VFW. Ann Sourile had a great idea to include the poolee's parents, who meet monthly with the recruiters, to further demonstrate the reach of the Marine Corps family. This will be a great opportunity to welcome these new poolees and their parents into the family of the Marine Corps. We are in the planning stage and welcome your suggestions. In addition to the Commandant offering his welcome and words of wisdom, we are considering having some of the League members staged throughout the event where the poolees and their parents could talk about various aspects of the Marine Corps. For example, Wayne Koster said he could bring some flight gear from his days as a helicopter crew during Vietnam. He would be able to answer questions that may arise for those poolees who may enter the Marine Corps Air Wing. I am sure other Detachment members from the Air Wing could assist Wayne. Any grunts, cannon cockers, or tankers willing to represent their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)? How about individuals from Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Lebanon Deployment, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, etc.? Other areas that could be addressed are specialty duties such as embassy duty, drill instructor, or Marine Barracks. The possibilities are endless. The Marine Corps League (MCL) Auxiliary has also volunteers to assist. President Deb Sosnowski thought about having a flower for each of the moms. Good touch since the following day is Mother's Day! We only have about 4-5 weeks to complete the planning and organization for this event. The recruiters have been in contact with us and it looks like we may have more than 75 attendees, at last count. Total head-count could exceed 120, so please set aside that morning. Breakfast will be provided by the Detachment. I have locked in the date with the VFW. This is what we need from the MCL and MCL Auxiliary membership: 1. We need volunteers. 2. Do you have other ideas for the breakfast? 3. We will need a list of who will be coming from the MCL and MCL Auxiliary. We need to be as accurate as possible since we will have to let the VFW know how many people to prepare breakfast for. If you will not be at the April 2015 monthly meeting to sign up, please call ASAP. 4. We need people to welcome the poolees and parents. Did I mention we need volunteers? This is one of the reasons why you are a member of the MCL and MCL Auxiliary. Too often we have the same small group coming out to volunteer. This is an opportunity to come out and show your support to the Detachment and more importantly, to these young people who will soon be heading off to earn the title Marine. It will also show the parents of these young volunteers that we are a very unique and close family. Please give me, Daniel Boucek a call, at 815.477.8770, or e-mail me at [email protected] if you wish to volunteer and/or if you have other ideas for this event.
