MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | JUNE 2015 | Vol 2. No. 6 The Monthly Newsletter is published once a month at 507 1st Ave N., Escanaba, Michigan 49829 Senior of the Month By RICK RUDDEN [email protected] Senior centers don’t give awards for attendance. If they did, Helen Lehtikangas would definitely be in the running. Helen, who lives about 10 miles out of Rock, typically drives to the Rock Senior Center the four days a week it’s open (Monday-Thursday). The only thing that stops her is driving in the dark and the occasional snowstorm. She’s been volunteering at the center for 28 years. “I like to be where there’s people, and there’s a lot of nice people here,” she said. Her volunteer efforts include helping in the kitchen, setting tables, and selling bingo cards and 50-50 tickets. She also shows up on the one Sunday a month the Rock Senior Corporation dance takes place at the center. “It’s a lot of fun. You meet different people and I bring a dish to pass for the lunch.” She also plays bingo on Mondays at the center. She grew up on a small dairy farm which had eight to 10 cows. She married Leonard, and they also had a dairy farm which was a tad larger than her parents’ farm. Leonard, who passed 29 years also, augmented the family income doing various carpentry jobs around the area. In 1976 they sold the farm, and Leonard started doing even more carpentry work. His pride and joy was a round roof barn near Boney Falls that was 109 feet long. She still marvels when remembering how he would walk the entire ridge of the roof while he was building it. She has four children, five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. She also did a lot of babysitting for her grandchildren, and enjoys telling stories about those fun and loving times. Rock Senior Center Administrator Becky Carey is a big fan. “Helen is one of the cornerstones of Rock Senior Center and is willing to do whatever is needed on any given day. The center is very much a better place because of her. She has some great stories and is always ready to share a laugh,” Becky said. M E N U All meals served with milk. Suggested meal donation is $3 per person. Menu modifications may be necessary at times. George was the lucky bouquet winner Caps for Kids We are again participating in MSU Extension’s Purple Caps for Babies program. These lovingly crocheted or knitted caps will be donated to newborns in Delta County, and will help spread the story about PURPLE crying. When babies cry so hard they turn purple, they can actually create brain damage, and this is often a frustrating thing for new parents. Sometimes these frustrated parents don’t know how to handle a baby that cries so hard that the baby actually stops Page 8 breathing and turns blue/ purple, and injury might occur without the parent’s knowledge. If you would like to participate, we ask that the caps be premie to newborn size, with some purple in them, but NO decorations, pompoms or string/ ribbons. Naomi will have a basket on her desk to drop them off. Our goal is 100 caps. We made 70 last year. Let’s break the record! UPDATE We’ve added 25 more caps to our goal of 100. We’re up to 97! Help us exceed our goal this year! MDSCAA SENIOR SERVICES June 2015 Newsletter Gladstone Senior Center Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. June has come to Gladstone and we are ready for it! While it’s heating up outside, we are going to cool it down, Daddy-O. We are going with a 1950s theme for our Father’s Day dinner with our center being decorated like an old-fashioned soda shop. Nothing says summer like an ice cream parlor or soda shop. Too bad we don’t have the room to put in a drive-up window or have some girls on roller skates taking your order. That would be fun! For our Father’s Day Dinner, we are making a menu modification for Wednesday, June 17. On the general menu it says we are serving a ham dinner, but we are actually serving beef roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, baby carrots and banana split cake. All of the homebound and the center diners will receive this modified menu June 17. Center Ongoing Daily Activities Mondays: Exercise Class at 11 a.m. Tuesdays: Line Dancing at 10 a.m. Wednesdays: Card Playing at 1 p.m. Thursdays: Exercise Class at 11 a.m. Fridays: Duplicate Bridge at 10 a.m. Menominee Senior Center Bus Hours: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Please call at least a day in advance to schedule your ride. Looking ahead: We will be bringing back a night meal — possibly even two! Our first night meal will be sometime in July. It will have an Italian theme with lasagna dinner. Mama, Mia! We are working with the other Menominee County Senior Centers to plan our annual Senior Picnic. This year’s event will be at the pavilion in Stephenson. As soon as all the details become available, I will let you all know … probably sometime in July. Also, we are shaking things up a bit for the menu Friday, June 26. We are going to be doing a “Taco/ Nacho Bar” at the center. This allows center guests to build your own tacos or make a nacho supreme with the toppings they like. Our home-delivered meal clients will be receiving the enchilada menu as posted. We are working on possibly taking a read road trip to Green Bay via Westlund to visit the Packers Hall of Fame and the Stadium. This trip may end up being late summer or more into early fall. It will depend on the reopening of the Hall of Fame and scheduling of tours, etc. Go! Pack! Go! We will be taking another road trip to another senior center within our Community Action Agency. On Wednesday, June 10, we will be heading up to visit the folks at the Gladstone Senior Center. Sign up early as seating is limited. There is plenty of planning going on. I can’t do this all by myself. I have a great staff and helpful volunteers that step in to keep this center shaking, rattling and rolling. Thank you all for your cooperation and support of the activities and programs this center provides. EP! E B P! BEE MDSCAA SENIOR SERVICES June 2015 Newsletter Hope you have a great June. Father’s Day Dinner Come join us Wednesday, June 17, as we celebrate our “nifty” dads. Party starts at approximately 11:30 a.m.; dinner served at noon. We are serving a beef roast dinner fit for a man, and banana split cake for dessert. There will be prizes and a “share the wealth raffle.” We will serve up root beer floats and black cows. We hope you join in on the ‘50s party theme and dress up? Anyone wearing ‘50s attire will receive a free meal certificate. So, dust off those poodle skirts and saddle shoes, get out the hair grease and white t-shirts and have some fun. Senior Craft and Game Day The Menominee Recreation Department will host a “Senior Craft and Game Day” 1 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at our center. The Menominee Recreation Department brings all the craft items and “helpers” for you to complete and take home a craft. After the craft portion, they play games-sometimes for prizes. There is no cost for this event, and all are welcome to attend. Rain or shine, the fun’s inside! Well-behaved grandchildren are encouraged to come with a grandparent. BOARD MEMBER WANTED The Community Action Agency is looking for someone in Menominee County to become a member of its board. This senior would travel to Escanaba to attend agency board meetings. This person would serve as a representative of Menominee County. This senior should have knowledge of the Community Action Agency and its programs. If you or someone you know that resides in Menominee County would like to become a board member, please contact the Community Action Agency Office in Escanaba, (906)786-7080 Page 14 THIS MONTH’S ROAD TRIP: GLADSTONE SENIOR CENTER We will be traveling to the Gladstone Senior Center Wednesday, June 10, to pop in and check out the senior center and also join them for lunch. They are on Eastern time, so they will serve at 11 a.m. our time. Our bus has limited seating, so sign up early. This is a great chance to check out another senior center. Each CAA center is unique, and we will try to get to other centers as summer rolls on. MEDICARE/MEDICAID ASSISTANCE Those of you who are considered “Dual Enrollees” (persons with both Medicare and full Medicaid benefits) may have had changes to the way your Medicaid is being processed. Those who received letters from MI HEALTH and did not “opt out” of the auto-enrollment will be placed in a plan called UPHP. The UPHP plan is aimed to help dual enrollees manage their healthcare needs by assigning a case manager to help enrollees with issues such as transportation or setting up necessary services. Benefits can include some coverage for hearing aids and dental care which are not covered under standard plans. The good news is that dual enrollees can switch plans at any time, so don’t panic if you aren’t satisfied. If you would like to know more or how to enroll or disenroll from the UPHP plan, please contact me for assistance. How to Protect Seniors From Health Insurance Scams Experts offer these tips to keep con artists at bay: Protect your medical identity. Never share personal or financial information with a stranger, whether you’re contacted by phone, mail or online. Only give your insurance information to those who have provided you with medical services. “Guard your Medicare number as closely as you would any other personal information.” It is recommended that beneficiaries keep their Medicare card at home and instead, carry a copy of the card with all but the last four numbers scratched out. Beware of “free” services. “There’s often some kind of trade-off anytime someone offers something for free,” says Melissa Simpson, program manager of the Center for Benefits Access at the National Council on Aging. “They’re usually after your Medicare numbers.” Another type of fraud involves medical equipment manufacturers, like companies that offer free diabetes testing supplies. These vendors then charge Medicare or private insurers for products that were not needed or perhaps never delivered. Review your Medicare summary notice. Carefully check the quarterly Medicare “summary notice” mailed to your home to verify the accuracy of your doctor visits, hospital stays and medical care. Some health care providers, for example, may charge for services never rendered. We would like to thank the Family Dollar Store in Powers for setting up a “Drop Off Box” in their store for customers to donate such items as food, paper products, personal hygiene items, laundry and cleaning supplies to the Hermansville Senior Center’s Food Pantry. We would also like to thank the North Central “Drama Club” and Rhonda for their donations. Our Food Pantry has helped many people, and your generous donations are a big part of that. Every little bit helps, and would be greatly appreciated. Please make sure food items haven’t passed their freshness date. Thank You!
