NHCA Annual General Meeting
by Ivon Mbuyamba
On April 16, 2015 the Northern
Hills Community Association will host
its 2014 Annual General Meeting at
the Harvest Hills Alliance Church.
The event will start at 5 pm and we
invite you all to come and become
familiar with our various community
programs and activities. There will be
some year-end acknowledgement
and awards, and you will also have
the opportunity to meet and greet the
NHCA board members, local government representatives, committee
members and volunteers. Pizza and
refreshments will be provided in addition to a resource fair in which different groups will participate, presentations, speeches from distinguished
guests, the AGM itself and draw prizes
to cap the day.
Last year the NHCA celebrated its
20th year anniversary and the AGM
was the perfect conduit for the organization to celebrate that millstone
with its membership and residents.
Since its 20th year anniversary a
year ago, the NHCA has undergone
a number of significant changes. Important among those changes is the
new organizational Board structure
that resulted from a series of strategic planning meetings. It occurred
as part of a process in which the
NHCA is reinventing itself at different organizational levels in order to
be more competent in delivering on
its promises to the community of the
Northern Hills.
Therefore, this April 16, 2015 we
invite you to come and assess the
health of your community association.
Find out about our vision, finances,
accomplishments and everything
happening in your community. Your
input is essential and determines the
shape the community association
takes. Moreover, you will have the
opportunity to discuss your concerns
with members of all three levels of
government and school Board trustees.
In conclusion, we would like to
remind you that in order to vote at
the AGM, an active membership is required. We will offer membership and
membership renewals at the event;
therefore, we encourage everyone to
attend.
Thank you to all our sponsors !

From the President
NHCA VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
by Sunny Shuang, President
Vacancies on the Board:
NHCA Board has a few board
members retire after completing their
two year terms, a couple of mid-term
resignations for a variety of reasons.
We welcomed four new board members joining at the Annual General
Meeting (AGM). At the current time,
there are still several board positions
open and available for new members.
If you are interested in any Board
Position, please contact: president@
northernhills.ab.ca.
VOLUNTEER WITH
THE COMMITTEES:
Events – Our association hosts
many events, large and small, throughout the year and we are looking for
individuals to join this committee to
help organize and carry out the tasks
necessary for success. Love to
socialize and enjoy the feeling of
a job well done?
Contact [email protected]
Rinks – Our rink in Harvest Hills
provided many hours of skating pleasure for residents this year and could
use the help with clearing and flooding
in winter as well as mowing the site
during the summer months. We will
be working with the City to have a similar rink up and running in Panorama
for next winter and our rinks committee is seeking eager individuals to help
with the planning and execution of
an additional outdoor rink in Coventry
Hills, this would be a dynamic
committee to be a part of.
Contact [email protected] Community Beautification – We
are expanding our efforts to beautify
neglected areas in our communities and are looking for committee
members. Activities of the group may
include organizing fence painting, gardening, community clean ups, looking
for solutions to repair/remove damaged entry features etc. Have a desire
to see improvements in our community aesthetics? Contact community@
northernhills.ab.ca
Graffiti Abatement - Individuals
eager to learn how to clean it up and
prevent future outbreaks! If you are
someone who likes to take action and
see results, this could be the opportunity for you. Please contact
[email protected] if
graffiti gets under your skin!
Litter Clean Up - Have some
ideas on how to clean up and prevent
littering in our neighbourhoods? We
are seeking individuals who are as
annoyed as we are about the amount
of loose litter lingering in our alleys,
on our boulevards and in our green
spaces. Please contact community@
northernhills.ab.ca if you’ve had
enough!
Community Garden – Our
existing gardens in Harvest Hills and
Coventry Hills have been a great success. If you would like to help out at
these gardens by doing a little carpentry work, mowing, weeding, watering
or planting flowers etc. this would
be a great way to get out and enjoy
the sunshine! Are you a resident of
Panorama or Country Hills and would
like to have a garden in your neighbor-

for you. Contact

Hills. We are working on providing
activities and information to assist
with the transition into our area. If
you are a resident of the Northern Hills
Communities, familiar with the area
and perhaps speak another language,
this could be a wonderful opportunity
to meet and greet! Contact ahih@

President NHCA
I
t takes a village to build a neighborhood. Here we go again; our
busiest season is about to begin!
Soccer, Garage Sale, Community
Clean-up & e-cycle, and the 2014
Annual General Meeting (AGM) on
April 16th, 2015 at the Harvest Hills
Alliance Church.
This spring again, over 1200
children will be participating in
NHCA Outdoor Soccer program.
Thanks to all the families who have
returned to the program for another
great season and to all those who
have decided to join our fantastic
program for the first time this year.
New this year to the program is an
experienced soccer coordinator,
Eileen Fisher, who provides operational and logistical support all in
the effort to run a smooth program
and give the participant a better
and positive experience. She will be
responsible for the children soccer program which will offer some
relief to our Sports Director, Janice
Henderson, whose investment in
the program cannot be overstated.
Plan to attend the community resources fair on the same
day as the AGM, April 16th from 5
pm - 6:30 pm at the Harvest Hills
Alliance Church. We welcome all
residents to come and meet all the
volunteers from our community
programs and activities, from other
social services offered in the community and city services. Also, you
will meet elected representatives
as well as NHCA board members
and staff. At 7 pm, the AGM will
elect the new board of directors for
the 2015-2017 two years term. The
bylaws resolution and budget will
be presented and your input on
those points will be needed. That
will be followed by the recognition
of community hero awards that
will be honored for their dedication
and hard work. Lastly, there will
be some exiting door prizes for all
members at the end of the AGM.
Community Clean-Up event, in
collaborating
with Panorama E-Centre,
will take place
on April 26th,
2015 at 9 am.
Please come
forward to
bring all you
are in the
works. This is an opportunity to get
together with your neighbors and
help keep our neighborhoods clean
through litter pick up and recycling
of old household and electronic
items. For more information, please
contact events director events@
northernhills.ab.ca.
Registration for the garage
sale tables begins in April and we
encourage you to secure your table
before the NHCA Garage Sale/ Flea
Market takes place on Saturday,
May 23rd from 9 am – 1 pm. If you
have items to sell or are looking for
a steal of a deal, remember to join
us for a fun day of bargain hunting!
Join us in the Harvest Hills and
Coventry Community Gardens this
spring. Space is limited; so make
sure you don’t miss the opportunity
to grow flowers and veggies close
to home and to meet great people
who share the same enthusiasm!
If you are planning to visit the
NHCA office to purchase or renew
a membership, inquire about the
community clean up event, register for the Garage Sale, or find out
more about the AGM event, you are
more than welcome to do. Also,
remember to visit our website at
www.northernhills.ab.ca for all updates. I would like to thank all our
sponsors, volunteers, staff, board
members and members of the
Northern Hills Community Association who continue to make this the
best community ever!

Help drive cancer away
Canadian Cancer Society needs volunteers to
drive cancer patients to their life-saving treatments
Ward 4 Report
Spring Cleaning Made Simple
As you are doing your spring cleaning this year, make sure to find the
right place for all your unwanted stuff.
By disposing of your materials
the right way, you’ll keep unnecessary items out of the landfill and give
a second life to materials that can be
reused, recycled or composted.
Keep your spring cleaning simple
with help from these City programs
and services:
ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DEPOT
29 locations around the city are
available to take your old electronics
for recycling.
A
s crucial as her medical team is,
Nikki Stevens of NE Calgary says
there’s another dedicated group
that is helping her fight back against
cancer – Canadian Cancer Society
volunteer drivers who transport
her to and from the treatments she
needs to survive.
“Drivers are angels on wheels,”
says Nikki. “When I book my ride
through the Society, I know I can always depend on the volunteer drivers
to be there.”
Like Nikki, many people living
with cancer in and around Calgary rely
on the Society’s Volunteer Driver Program to get to their treatments for any
number of reasons: they’re too unwell
to drive or have been given doctor’s
orders not to drive; they don’t want
to burden their family members with
the responsibility of getting them to
treatment; or they can’t afford parking
costs at the hospital or public transit
and cab fare.
That’s why Society drivers stepped
up last year to provide rides to and
from treatment for nearly 2,000
cancer patients in Calgary and nearby
cities: High River, Okotoks, Cochrane,
Chestermere and Airdrie.
But with growing demand for
this service – which is offered free of
charge thanks to the generosity of donors – the Society is running dangerously low on volunteer drivers.
“We are struggling to accommodate all the requests we’re receiving
for rides,” says Erica Bell, Volunteer
Engagement Coordinator with the
Society. “We are asking the people of
Calgary to make a tremendous difference in the lives of cancer patients in
your community by joining our dedicated team of volunteer drivers.”
Volunteer drivers must:
• make a long-term commitment of
no less than 6 months
• must be available to drive at least
one full day or two half days per
week
• have a reliable vehicle (the Society
reimburses for mileage)
• have a current driver’s licence,
vehicle registration and insurance
(proof of these documents will be
required)
• be willing to provide a criminal
record check and driver’s abstract
• posses good communications

Calgary’s Drainage System
Throughout the year, The City of
Calgary Water Services responds to
hundreds of calls
related to water
pooling on streets
from blocked storm
drains or heavy
rainfall. Storm
drains, known in
the industry as
catch basins, drain water and snow
melt off sidewalks, streets and roads,
into our storm system and eventually
into our rivers.
There are approximately 50,000
storm drains in Calgary so Water
Services is required to prioritize when
responding to citizen calls. Water entering houses, garages or businesses and
causing property damage is our number one priority. Water pooling in front
of hospitals, schools, playgrounds and
bus zones is also a high service priority.
During a storm or a heavy snow
melt, storm drains pool water on the
street, letting it slowly drain into the
pipes below. In newer communities,
Inlet Control Devices (ICD’s) have been
installed inside selected storm drains
to keep water on the road until the
system can accept the surplus water.
These ICD devices prevent the storm
system from being overwhelmed, causing water backups. If you see sustained
pooling on the street, be patient, it may
not be flooding, but controlled water
drainage.
No matter the season, The City
does not advise citizens to try and clear
the storm drains themselves as potential hazards may be hiding under the
water’s surface. However, if the storm
drain is not covered with water and it
is safe to do so, citizens can clear the
grate of debris, leaves, snow or ice to
create better drainage.
For more information or to report
a storm drain issue, use the City’s 311
mobile app, visit calgary.ca/stormdrains
or call 311.

NORTHERN EDGE NEWS 13
NHCA has amazing membership signups and we want you too!
by David Hartwick
1st Vice President, NHCA
Mayor Nenshi declared March as
Community Association Membership
Month. For the Northern Hills Community Association, this was a flashback
to October 2011, and his call out for
3 Things for Calgary, and encouraging people to join their community
association. Over 3 years later, there
had been little change in membership
numbers for the NHCA until a group
of Harvest Hills residents gathered on
March 11th. In one night, 27 people
stood in line to buy a membership,
and many more went home and did
it online. We want to share their story
and why it matters to all of us.
Harvest Hills residents as well as
residents from other Northern Hills
communities joined together to learn
more about the proposed redevelopment of the Harvest Hills Golf Course
by Quantum Place and Cedarglen
Homes from the perspective of a residents group formed called Calgarians
for Responsible Development. In case
you missed the extensive media coverage, including our own Northern Edge
News, the Harvest Hills Golf Course
has been sold for redevelopment
with the intent of adding many more
residents to our community. While this
is an obvious concern to those that
live on the golf course, development
directly impacts on the neighbouring
communities as well.
Do you wait in long lines at the
drug store? A favourite local restaurant?
Trying to get a Doctor’s appointment?
Or maybe you have been in that long
line of traffic on a wintery day that is
sliding backwards down Country Hills
Blvd trying to get up the hill to Deerfoot Trail? Now imagine adding more
people to this community.
Have you tried holding an event
in the community and found no
space? Have you driven to Airdrie for
a 6 hour wait at Urgent Care? Have
you spent hundreds of dollars every
year for bus transportation to get your
kids to school because there is not a
school nearby? Have you moved your
kids from the CBE to Calgary Separate Schools so they could be closer
to home? Did you know that Notre
Dame High School has increased
from 1400 students to 2000? Are you
driving your kids to Carstairs for minor
hockey? Or to Confederation Park for
baseball? Or Sandstone for tennis?
Now imagine adding more people to
this community.
Now imagine if all our residents
bought a membership in the NHCA.
Imagine if the NHCA could show Calgary City Council that we doubled or
tripled our memberships. Imagine the
strength of our community opposing
redevelopment of a golf course, or another project that concerns residents.
Imagine the impact on development of a health centre and high
school, both expected a decade ago;
Or the ability to push harder for the
Greenline LRT; Or the strength to get
more ice rinks. Imagine our push for
more programs and services available
within our community rather than driving somewhere for baby clinics, seniors
support, or family support.
Most of all, imagine if the NHCA
rewarded you for buying a membership! In about 10 minutes, we were
able to explain all this value to Harvest
Hills residents that attended this meeting. We were able to point out that for
their $30 per household, and even less
for seniors, they could quickly pay for
their membership by using local businesses….businesses they already use
every day, and receive big discounts.
Businesses like Marks Work Wearhouse, Progressive Optometry, Dollar
Bonanza, Applebee’s, Cob’s and so
many more. Our membership reward
are so valuable, that other communities are now asking us for help with
their membership programs.
On April 16th at Harvest Hills
Alliance Church, we are holding a
Resource Fair from 530-630pm, preceding our Annual General Meeting
at 7pm. We expect our elected representatives in attendance, and a record
turnout from Harvest Hills residents,
and would like all Northern Hills residents to join us. We are only as strong
as our membership so please consider
dropping into the Resource Fair, attending the AGM, or both. A membership is not required for the Resource

APRIL 2015
A MESSAGE FROM WARD 3
Harvest Hills Golf Course
Development
The sale of the Harvest Hills Golf Course to Cedarglen Homes was announced to the community in October. The Northern Hills Community Association has been involved in several aspects of the process since then. While the
golf course will remain open for the 2015 season, the developer plans to submit
a rezoning application to the City in May. NHCA will receive a copy of the application and make it available to all interested parties. The City will conduct a
public input process where residents can make their views known and a recommendation on the development will be made to City Council by the Calgary
Planning Commission, probably in the fall of 2015.
The community’s Planning and Development Committee has met with representatives from the City Planning Department to understand the rezoning and
Area Structure Plan amendment process. We have met with QuantumPlace
Developments Ltd. who will be developing the property with Cedarglen and participated in their workshops and on their community advisory group. We have
attended meetings of the Calgarians for Responsible Development committee
who have formed to oppose any rezoning and are working to preserve the golf
course in its current state. In late January the Northern Hills Community Association’s board of directors adopted the following position:
“the NHCA does not support development of the Harvest Hills golf course,
but in the event that development does occur, the NHCA wants to be in a position to provide meaningful input to the character and extent of the development.”
In keeping with this position we have supported the Calgarians for a Responsible Development committee in their highly successful town hall meeting
(more about this later) and we have participated with QuantumPlace to provide
input to their concept plan. Our input to QuantumPlace revolves around maintaining as much green space as possible, a green space buffer for all residents,
reducing density within the development, providing public pathways and connectivity to the community, and a gradual transition of housing types from existing residences. An initial concept plan will be developed which hopefully will
incorporate these principles.
QuantumPlace Developments Ltd. will be holding two drop-in format open
house sessions in late April where an initial concept plan for the Harvest Hills
Residential Expansion will be presented and discussed. This initial concept will
be based on community feedback gathered during QuantumPlace’s November
drop-in sessions as well as the Explore planning workshops held in January and
February. At the open houses, the initial concept plan will be explained in detail
and further feedback from the community will be sought. Both QuantumPlace
and their project consultants will be on hand to answer questions.
The open houses will be on Thursday, April 23 from 5pm-9pm and Saturday,
April 25 from 1pm-5pm at the Acclaim Hotel Calgary Airport at 123 Freeport
Boulevard N.E. Calgary.
For further information visit the QuantumPlace Developments Ltd., Harvest
Hills Residential Expansion website at www.quantumplace.ca/projects/harvesthills/.
The town hall meeting held by the Calgarians for Responsible Development
committee on March 11 was extremely well attended with a passionate and
vocal crowd expressing their desire to keep the golf course. Canvassing that has
been carried out by the committee in Harvest Hills has found near unanimous
opposition to the development. The committee outlined the issues that will
result from development - increased traffic, strain on existing amenities, loss of
greenspace and mature trees, and loss of the golf course. The committee sees
this as a Calgary-wide issue for developers seeking to turn public green spaces
and recreational spaces into housing or commercial developments. Their message was that this is not supported by Calgarians, that this is not a done deal
and that this development can be stopped. Their strategy will be fully developed
by the time the rezoning application is made to the city. To follow the committee and their plans they can be reached by email at [email protected] and have a website at www.keepharvesthills greenspace.com.
NHCA is also seeking input from its members and residents regarding the
proposal. There will be formal opportunities for both the community association
and the public to provide input on the actual application when it is circulated,
but for now you can provide feedback by emailing [email protected].
Ward 3
Development
Updates
Ward 3 is the
largest ward in
Calgary. It continues to outpace
every other ward
in both residential and commercial development and with its population in excess of 100,000 people; it is
unofficially the third largest “city” in
Alberta after Calgary and Edmonton.
Currently in Ward 3 there are
many projects that are underway
or approved by Council to begin in
the near future. One of these is the
Keystone Area Structure Plan located
across Stoney Trail, directly north of
Northern Hills. The Keystone ASP,
which was approved by Council in
2012, is made up of 2,669 acres of
land. Once completed Keystone will
house up to 60,000 residents, employ
approximately 18,000 people and
during its development, will provide
hundreds of jobs to Calgarians in the
construction industry.
With so much development occurring in Ward 3, I decided to launch
three videos on my website: Calgary.
ca/ward3, in order to provide an overview of these projects. The timelines
I have given are based on information
I currently have available and do not
take into consideration unforeseen
circumstances that may affect these
estimates.
I would encourage you to take
a few minutes to watch my videos
and if you have any further questions
about development in Ward 3 or to
share other concerns please feel free
to contact my office.

Councillor, Ward 3
