50 £9 CME Centre for Medical Education DISCOVERY SHORT COURSE: 13–17 APRIL 2015 Key topics in medical education: addressing the GMC trainer framework In 2012, the GMC published its implementation plan for recognition and approval of teachers and trainers within medicine at all levels. The framework is based on the seven areas set out by the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME), and relates to the following named roles: those responsible for Undergraduate students’ progress at each medical school; lead coordinators at each local education provider; and named educational and clinical supervisors at Postgraduate level. This course is relevant to national and international audiences. Nationally it will appeal to trainers in named roles seeking GMC approval or those looking for CPD to progress to those roles. It will also appeal to those wanting to gain good basic training in Medical Education, and to those in leadership/ faculty development roles looking to develop their faculty using a robust framework. Learning objectives By the end of this week you should be able to: • Describe a framework for accrediting trainers and apply to own context • Construct and apply theory-underpinned principles to your own teaching • Recognise the characteristics of a good assessment tool • Design valid and reliable exam questions; carry out an Item Analysis • Reflect on your own and others’ teaching to inform your own CPD • Facilitate learning through a variety of different means across a range of contexts • Engage in constructive feedback dialogue • Create a personal developmental plan for yourself and / or others Monday: Starting after lunch we introduce the need for a robust accreditation framework for medical educators using the GMC trainer framework as an exemplar. Basic principles and their importance to the foundations for teaching will then be discussed. Tuesday: focuses on the skills and techniques for small and large group teaching. Participants will be encouraged throughout to look at their own setting, experience and developmental needs. Wednesday: focuses on enhancing learning through assessment. We will look at the basic principles of assessment, including interactive sessions on question design and item analysis. Thursday: focuses on the clinical context – identifying learning opportunities, promoting development of clinical reasoning, including patients, and improving consultation skills. Friday: focuses on supporting/monitoring educational progress including effective and efficient feedback dialogue at individual and group levels. After lunch an optional session gives participants the opportunity to discuss their next steps evidencing their teaching activities and CPD for their educational role. The week will be held in the brand new Interactive Teaching Suite and Gannochy Lecture Theatre (whose innovative design was specifically informed by the pedagogical needs of team based learning) at Dundee Medical School. Lunch times and the evening social event are always a popular time for participants to network with others on the course and members of the Dundee Medical School. Speakers from the Centre for Medical Education and Medical School will be joined by Claire MacRae (Staff Development Officer at Dundee Medical School).
