Need help with a grant?
Did you know the Department of Medicine has two programs to help faculty with writing, editing,
revising or resubmitting grants? The free Consult Program allows faculty to meet one-on-one with an
experienced grant writer for advice and feedback at any stage of the process. Faculty may also request
support from Dr. Janet Gross in our Proposal Development & Grant Writing Support program, in which
the Department of Medicine will pay half of the consulting fees.

Congratulatory Corner!
Jessica Alvarez (Endocrinology)
Dr. Alvarez was chosen in a national competition to be one of 28 Associate Scientific Advisors for
Science Translational Medicine! In this role, she will be writing 7-8 short editorial-like pieces on articles
of her choice with translational significance from front-line journals that will be published in Science
Translational Medicine over the next year.
Tiffany Thai and Mirandy Li (Nephrology)
Dr. Thai received the Research Recognition Award and Ms. Li received the Bob Gunn Undergraduate
Research Award from the APS Cell section at last week’s Experimental Biology 2015 meeting.

Dr. Walker is site principal investigator of a clinical trial funded by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. entitled,
“A Phase 3, Open-Label Study to Evaluate the Pharmacokinetics, Safety and Tolerability of Lumacaftor
in Combination with Ivacaftor in Subjects 6 through 11 Years of Age with Cystic Fibrosis, Homozygous
for the F508del-CFTR Mutation.”

The John Merck Fund: Developmental Disabilities Translational Research Program
Deadline: May 18
This awards program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaborative grant applications focused primarily on
FXS and DS, but the program supports studies focused on other developmental disabilities under special
circumstances. The Fund is particularly interested in translational research that is designed to improve
the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. Investigators from a range of

storage diseases, and disorders of the urea cycle, amino acid metabolism and metal transport where the

April 24: BCDB/Cell Biology Mini Symposium
The BCDB Training Grant and Cell Biology department will be hosting a seminar and policy talk by Larry
Goldstein on Friday April 24th. Dr. Goldstein has an active role in science policy and has served on
several public scientific advisory committees. His first talk is “Understanding our Shared Scientific
Citizenship and Scientific Advocacy Responsibilities” followed by a presentation on his lab’s research
entitled “Using Stem Cells to Probe the Secrets of Alzheimer's Disease.”

Highlighted Researcher
Wendy Neveu, MD, PhD (Pulmonary)
Dr. Neveu is a clinical fellow in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and
Sleep Medicine. Her research focuses on epigenetic regulation of fibroblast
phenotype by Transforming Growth Factor beta 1 in a lung fibrosis model. Other
research interests includes investigating how chronic alcohol exposure influences
adaptive T-cell immunity in the lung and how this contributes to increased rates of
infection. Her clinical interest is interstitial lung disease (ILD), with particular focus
on connective tissue disease-associated ILD. In her free time, Dr. Neveu enjoys
hiking, competing in women's bodybuilding, and birding. Read more (you may need
