Last chance for feedback on your new NIH biosketch!
Submit your newly-formatted biosketch to be reviewed at the upcoming Research Resources 101 session
on May 21. We will select and showcase a few biosketches during that session to seek comments and
suggestions for strategic improvement from our esteemed panel of NIH reviewers. If you would like to
be considered for this unique opportunity to gain collective wisdom on your newly formatted biosketch,
please submit a draft in the new format to Karen Summers by this Thursday, May 7.
NINDS Human Cell & Data Repository to distribute human cell resources
The repository will maintain the current collection of fibroblast and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)
lines as well as develop, characterize, expand, and where appropriate genetically modify new highquality iPSC, fibroblast cell lines and peripheral blood monocyte cells in accordance with the NINDS
mission. The repository will distribute human cell resources broadly to qualified academic and industry

Laura Hansen (Cardiology)
Dr. Hansen received a National Research Service Award (NRSA) postdoctoral research fellowship from
the NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for her project entitled, “The Role of
Hydrogen Peroxide in RAGE Expression in Collateral Vessel Formation.” Congratulations to Dr. Hansen
and her mentor, Dr. Bob Taylor!

amfAR: Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Basic Biomedical Research
Deadline: May 14 (for LOI)
These fellowship awards support research or clinical doctors with a goal to: facilitate the exceptional
postdoctoral researcher’s transition to a productive and independent long-term career in HIV/AIDS
research; support two years of postdoctoral basic biomedical research (phase 1); and provide the
possibility of one additional year of research funding during the first year of an independent research

Kendal Charitable Funds/NIA: T2 Translational Research: Research Leading to New
Health Care Practices, Community Programs and Policies Affecting Older Persons (R21)

Through its Promising Innovations program, Kendal will award grants of up to $25,000 in support of pilot
programs that aim to transform the experience of aging. The program supports ideas that can enhance
the lives of an aging population through services, research, and/or increased awareness of aging-related
issues and opportunities. Priority will be given to projects that have the greatest potential for change

Research Administration
CITI certification extended to three years
As of May 15, 2015, CITI certifications will be active for three years (previously two years). This
applies to any researcher working on a study in which Emory, VA or CHOA is the IRB of record. When
renewal intervals are updated in the CITI program, any certificate that was earned less than three
years ago will be extended to cover a three year period. Questions?

Highlighted Researcher
Ben Perry, PhD (Nephrology)
Ben is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Dr. Russ Price’s lab in the Renal Division.
He is investigating the effects of saturated fatty acids and glucocorticoids, two
features of type 2 diabetes mellitus, on skeletal muscle atrophy. In particular, he
is interested in whether these signals affect the lipid-sensitive peroxisome
proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR), a group of nuclear receptors with
emerging roles in muscle metabolism. Using selective PPAR inhibitors, Ben hopes
to define the specific roles and pathways of each PPAR isoform in atrophic
conditions. In his spare, time Ben enjoys spending time with his fiancée,
confusing Americans with his Australian accent, socializing, playing his guitar and
