Lupan Auditorium (Room 111) Center for Molecular Medicine, University of Nevada, Reno CME/C Oppor EU tunity Dr. Bill Thomas will discuss new understandings of the personal, economic, and cultural consequences of aging and ageism. The author of eight books and numerous articles, Dr. Thomas takes an evidence-based approach to his subject and leavens the information with illustrative examples drawn from history and mythology. The presentation will conclude with an active and engaging question and answer period. Following the activity, participants should be able to: • Describe “elderhood” as a distinct component of the human lifecycle • Explain similarities and differences between sexism, racism and ageism • Compare and contrast “declinist” and developmental perspectives on aging • Describe the impact of age-related functional polymorphism on how we think about care and organize care and structure public policy related to aging • Review the practical and functional barriers to creating new models of care, including gaps in education related to aging and “overhang” created by outmoded regulatory structures • Discuss simple changes that can alter the experience of older people within the health care delivery system Registration is required. Best known for his health care system innovations, he is the founder of a global non-profit (The Eden Alternative) which works to improve the care provided to older people. He is the creator of The Green House® which Provider Magazine has called the “pinnacle of culture change.” Dr. Thomas also developed the Senior ER model of care and is now working to transform the acute care services provided to elders.
