Numbers, Symbols & Words
Your Daily Warmup Puzzles
In bridge we manipulate puzzles involving numbers,
symbols and words and strive for logical solutions (or at
least inspired guesses). In each issue this week we will
feature a pair of number/symbol puzzles, an easy one here
on page two, and a harder one on the inside back cover;
and, a word puzzle at the bottom of this page. In all of
these puzzles, you will be able to solve them without
guesswork, by logical deductions alone, which is what
we're all trying to do at the table.
Today's puzzle is called Towers. We start with a grid of
squares again, this time with hint numbers on all four
sides. Grid sqaures contain buildings of varying heights,
from one (lowest) to grid size (highest). As with Sudoku
and other similar puzzles, there is one building of each
height on each row and column. The hint numbers on the
sides tell you how many buildings you can see from that
point, looking along the row or column, unobstructed by other buildings. You cannot see past a higher
building to a smaller one behind, of course.
Can you figure the height of each building from these clues alone? The easy version is above. Hints, and a
more difficult puzzle will appear on page 23. Answers will appear in tomorrow's Daily Bulletin.
Word puzzles this week are from an app called Unolingo. It is a crossword without clues! There are exactly
26 blanks to fill in, and each letter of the alphabet fills one of the blanks. The puzzles are designed so that
only common English words are
used; there are no unfamiliar,
arcane centuries-old words
found only in crossword puzzles.
You'll do best by looking for the
locations of the hard letters first:
QU, X, J. Be sure to mark off
the letters used in the checking
area beside the grid to keep
track of your progress. It's not
as difficult as it seems! I did
most of these in 3-6 minutes.
A list of words in the puzzle
(in alphabetical order) is on
page 1 7. If you need a more
limited hint, ask someone to
examine the word list and tell
you if the list contains, for
example, a six-letter word
starting with D and ending in E.

Wednesday Evening Swiss Teams
Active Ethics Pays 6.28 red points
Eda Kadar came to the Bulletin office after the last Director had left for dinner. Eda's team had gotten
agreement with the other team in their knockout match that Eda's team was the winner, and the result was
reported; but a recount showed a dead tie. She reported the error promptly enough so that the playoff loser
could still get into the evening Swiss, and Eda's team lost the playoff but came within one VP (along with the
H O team) of first place S TEINBERG , taking first in B and C. Bravo!

THURSDAY Edition
Towers Hints
Introductory Puzzle on Page 2
Towers recap: Each grid square contains a
building with a height from 1 to grid size, with no
duplicates in rows or columns. The hint numbers on
the outside (not many of those in the harder one on
this page!) tell you how many buildings are viewable
from that spot, looking along that row or column.
Smaller buildings behind larger ones cannot be seen
and are not included.
Towers hints: Hint numbers that are ‘1 ’s mean
that the nearest building has blocked out the rest in
that row or column, and therefore must be the
highest height possible for that grid. If you can see
all of the buildings in a row or column, they must be
arranged in numerical order from lowest to highest.
Now can you do the easy puzzle on page 2?
How about the more difficult one on this page?
Also, check the word puzzle on page 2.
Answers will appear in tomorrow's issue. The number/symbol puzzles were generated by software available
(for all computers or smartphones) at this site — www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/ — where
you will find over three dozen types of such puzzles and controls to suit any size and difficulty level.

Bridge By The Beach
THURSDAY Edition
Bridge By The Beach is the Daily Bulletin of the
201 5 Penticton Regional, at the Penticton Trade and
Convention Centre, a short walk from the beach at
Okanagan Lake. The tournament is Canada’s largest
and most enjoyable Regional, with events of all types
for players of all levels, and excellent hospitality. The
word ‘Penticton’ came from a local native language,
meaning “permanent place where waters pass by.”
Bridge By The Beach editor:
Bruce McIntyre
(Burnaby BC)
e-mail: [email protected]
I welcome news, stories, photos, interesting deals,
and other material for Bridge By The Beach , and I’ll
print as much as I can—from experts, intermediates,
and novices alike. I will be available for digital
photos of overall winners in all strats following each
evening session in the office near the north end
entrance. You’ll be able to find me preduplicating
boards for pair games in the office during the
afternoon and evening sessions—but my time may be
limited. If you send me a photo by e-mail, be sure to
tell me the event, and left-to-right names.
Each edition of Bridge By The Beach is posted
online by breakfast time. There are at least three
places where results are posted, and there is a
separate spot for photos taken at the tournament.
The District 1 9 web site d19.org used to be the hub
for all of this online activity, but the untimely passing
of Randy Corn last December has slowed the District
site down a bit. For this tournament, I am posting
and updating a page of links at this ‘tiny URL’:
ti n yu rl . com /d 1 9 pen t2 01 5
This one short address will give you one-click
access to all sites that are providing coverage for this
tournament, explaining what each site offers and
letting you know when things are posted. Bulletin
links will be there as well for those who like to read
the Daily Bulletin with breakfast!
