Welcome to the month of
March! I would first like to thank
Punxsutawney Phil and those
guys with the silly top hats in
Jefferson County, Pennsylvania
for reminding us that we still have
six weeks left of winter. Plans are
in place for a Roost tactical team
to relieve the rat-like creature
and his handlers from any
further prognostications.
It is -10 degrees as of the
writing of this newsletter and
unfortunately, for those folks
traveling south during the
winter vacation, it was a balmy
30 degrees in Miami last week.
Fortunately, we are on the back
end of a very long winter and by
the time you read this, Spring
will be less than three weeks
away.
I would like to thank everyone
that came out for the first Town
Hall meeting and the feedback
we gathered indicated that it
was very well received by the
membership. We will plan to
hold another meeting in May and
we hope to have another great
turnout from our members.
Our General Manager, John
Sheedy, has been hard at work
building his team since his arrival
in January. This month our new
F&B Manager, Membership &
Marketing Manager, Controller,
and Executive Chef will all be
on site and working to improve
our member experience. John
has conducted almost ninety
interviews since his arrival and I
know he is excited to introduce
his new team to the membership.
I would also like to congratulate
our Golf Professional, Tim
Lonergan, for being nominated
for the Northeastern New York
Section PGA Merchandiser of
the Year Award for 2015.
As always, please feel free
to bring your comments or
concerns to our attention.
The management, Board of
Governors, and the staff at the
Club are all working hard to
ensure a successful 2015.
Willard A. Anderson II
Congratulations to
Kerk Moore and Bruce
Hoffman, both of whom
made a hole-in-one in
Florida on Saturday,
February 21st.
It was the second hole
in one for both and
they are partners in the
Wildcat Country Club
member guest next
week.

Pat Culligan Farewell
Every day I get more and more
excited about everything we
do here at The Roost and I feel
confident that we are going to
have a fantastic summer (if it ever
gets here). In addition to having
the most fun-loving and sociable
members in the region here at
WRCC we have also been enjoying
some of the best entertainment
and club events, with even more
right around the corner. In case
you missed it, the Valentine’s Day
Dinner hosted by Brian and Marisa
Akley was absolutely fabulous,
from the Paris themed decorations,
lighting and music to the menu
selection, preparation and service.
Please join me in thanking them
for all their hard work. Please take
the time to read through the entire
newsletter to see all the wonderful
events we have planned for March.
Starting with the Family Funday
on March 1st, Trivia Night, Happy
Hour, St. Patrick’s Day, O’Malley’s
Pub Dinner Theatre, the Easter
festivities and MORE!
Speaking of more... I want everyone
to know that one of my main goals
is to provide better service, better
quality food, better facilities and
a better overall experience for
everyone at Wolferts Roost. In
order to accomplish that I will need
your assistance; Please call, stop by
or email me with any suggestions
or ideas you may have to make
your Club BETTER. You can always
email me anytime at JSheedy@
WolfertsRoost.com or stop by the
office on your way in to have lunch or
dinner or you can certainly call me
at the Club at 1-518-449-3223 ext.
105. If you take the time to bring
suggestions, ideas, improvements
or issues to my attention then I can
certainly do everything possible to
accommodate your request.
And finally, I want to take a
moment to introduce you to 4 new
staff members at The Roost. Each
is an integral part of the team here
and in some cases is replacing a
position that has been vacant for
several months.

GREENS AND
GROUNDS UPDATE
The holidays pass by and winter
starts to set in. Golf clubs and
tennis racquets are traded for skis,
snow-shoes, and a warm fire. This is
the time when the greens staff gets
busy prepping for the upcoming
season, and this year has been no
exception.
Our shop is busy with mower
sharpening, yearly equipment
servicing, and in some cases
a piece of equipment may be
completely overhauled. This year
we will spend less time fighting
with rusty antiquated equipment
as The Roost has re-tooled with

some new equipment for 2015. Our
primary rough mowing equipment
has transitioned from old tractor
drawn units, to modern self
propelled mowers that are much
quicker than their predecessors.
These new mowers will allow us
to cut the entire course in one full
day verses three days with the old
units. The result will be a much
more consistent rough height and
better quality of cut.
Projects on the course have been
underway as well. The greenside
bunker, left of number nine green
is getting a complete facelift.
Newly shaped curves, clean sand,
additional drainage, and a regrassed more open surround will
await you this spring.
Several flower beds around the
course and clubhouse have been
prepped for new plantings this
spring for a fresh attitude. One
notable area is the small island
in the pond on number fifteen.
Pictures from the 1920’s show an
elegant arrangement of plantings
on the island and for the 2015
centennial we will be restoring and
replanting the island to what it was
long ago.
As we wait for the warmer weather,
don’t forget to enjoy our groomed
cross country ski trails, snow
shoeing, sledding, and of course
be sure to stop in the clubhouse for
some hot cocoa and a warm lunch.
I look forward to seeing all of you
out on the course.

GOLF NEWS
As the golf world turns its attention
to the Masters Tournament in
Augusta, the excitement of our golf
season at the Roost really starts to
ramp up!
It’s the 2015 golf season at Wolferts
Roost and the 100th season is going
to be the best ever. Tim, Linda,
Adam, and the entire golf staff are
excited to jump start everyone’s
season by welcoming each to
stop by the newly decorated and
stocked golf shop. The golf staff
is quite anxious to have our new
PGA intern, Robert McCarthy join
us for the summer. Robert comes
to the Roost with an excellent golf
game, and a very helpful teaching
background. He will be a real
asset to our enhanced junior golf
program and also to our popular
junior sports camp.
The Roost is proud to offer our
golfers the new 2015 Yamaha golf
cars for the season. The new fleet
features a larger bag well so two
golf bags can fit with easy access
to the pockets on your golf bag,
an oversize roof for rain and sun
protection, an easy to use club rain
protector, and the convenience
of your accessories and beverage
containers being in the center of
the dash. You are sure to enjoy the
smooth ride the car provides.
The committees have work hard
and are thrilled to have their
calendar of events get started;
each having outstanding activities
that are sure to be great fun. Mark
your calendars so you do not miss
a single event.

ROB'S NEWSLETTER
Who are the ROB’S?
We are a group (last year 70 of us) 50
year and over male members of the
Roost that meet at 8:30am every
Thursday from the first of May till
the first of October to play golf. We
range in age between our oldest
member at 93, sweet swinging
Tom McTague (Mr. Fluidity) to Tom
Harvey and John Shahda in their
fifties. We will have two other
members in their nineties this
year, Art Dunn and Tony Giordano.
Hopefully we will get other 50
year youngs to join. We enjoy
the camaraderie, socialization,
competitiveness and chance to
play golf. Most of us come early
to have a cup of coffee, bagel and
pastry and check out what is new.
Some take a few (that’s all we need)
practice swings and then we tee off
with an 8:30 shotgun start. After
golf +/- 12:30 most of us will have
lunch and wait in anticipation to
see who won the coveted golf ball
awards for the week. Some actually
go back to work.
All that is necessary is for you to
say by each Tuesday, if your are
playing on Thursday, and we set
up the foursomes and get your bag
on the carts ready to go! To keep
the camaraderie going we try to
have members playing in different
groups each week, so that you
get to play with as many different
members as possible during the
year..There is a sign up sheet in the
Men’s locker room or you can call
the Pro Shop.
Our weekly tournament format
includes some individual play, and
some 2 and 4 man team play. We
will again have the “ROB Fed Ex Cup
Tournament”. It will run all year, and
there will be a half a point awarded
to each weekly player, and then
additional points for first through
fourth place for the weekly event,
and points for closest to the pin
on hole number 15. We will keep a
running tally and the winner will
be “crowned” at the closing dinner.
There will also be prizes for the
first and second place in our four
handicapped groups.
This year we will continue to
have Tim’s Tips. Our Golf Pro, Tim
Lonergan, will give us golfing hints
(yes, it is hard to believe but we do
need them) to improve our game 5
times during the season stating at
8:15am.
As always we look forward to our
home and home matches with
Albany Country Club, and we have
added a new event this year in July
where we will play with our club
Pros.

6 THE ROOST MARCH 2015
We are keeping the annual dues
at $70.00 and this includes our
opening day luncheon, the closing
day dinner (with our famous open
bar), and the coveted weekly golf
ball awards. We increased our
average weekly member play
last year and want to increase
it even more this year.. We are
always looking for new members
and we would love for any male
Roost member over 50 years of
age to come and join us. So, if you
want a good group of guys, some
socializing, and a weekly round
of golf, join the best group in the
Roost, become a member of the
ROB’s in 2014!! If you want more
information, contact the officers
Don Hoffman, Rick Carlstrom or
Jim Mc Mahon.
- Note on the Fridge -
I came home from the golf course
today. The wife had left a note on the
refrigerator:
“IT’S NOT WORKING, I can’t take
it anymore!! Gone to stay with my
mother.”
I opened the fridge, the light came
on, AND the beer was cold... What in
the world is she talking about?
