Your delegates take their time to attend these meetings on your behalf to make plans for our future. Check The Caller for the club specials and e-mail messages from Mary Ann Walker on demos and club closings during the month. Go to the clubs who are dancing when you can. Jim and I did not attend any club dances this month. I had "out patient" surgery, which is clearly defined as "we cut you open, smash your innards, sew you up and send you home with a big bottle of pain pills." This also means I am not able to dance for 6 to 8 weeks. Ed and Sharon Sharrow sent me a terrific get well card which suggests that I am now eligible to join the "sitters" on the sideline! Now here was a brilliant idea! The National will be held in June in Springfield, MA. I know those who are able to attend this dance will really enjoy it. We always loved the nationals we attended. Once again, if you haven't pre registered for the Tennessee State Dance in August and our Mid-South Festival in October, please get your registrations in soon. Sidney Nelson has worked hard setting up this festival and others are also working to make this a good festival. Again, if you have ideas for publicity or new dancer classes, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Apparently, no one has conjured up a brilliant idea, as I haven't received any "new ideas" e-mails. Talk to me! We look forward to seeing you across the square this month somewhere ........Dorothy Bobo, Pres. The Germantown Horse show has commandeered our hall for June 3, and we will be closed. This means we will celebrate birthdays and anniversaries -with cake and ice cream-on June 10. At that time we will recognize Sharon Ott and Eddie's birthdays and Mary and Hassell Smith's anniversary. WOW, not much going on except birthdays? If you believe this come by the Pickering some Wednesday and enjoy the fun and fellowship of a square dance with rounds in between. Except for our celebration of b'days and anniversaries, our next special is the July 22, Christmas in July Dance. For sure plan to be at that one. —jeb Join us on August 6th, 7th and 8th 2015 for the 41 st Square Convention, back in Gatlinburg again after Dancers that record-setting 2014 Convention celebrated there. The beautiful W. L. Mills Opal Dees' Conference Center provides more birthday at than great dancing space in a the Daryl comfortable and convenient layout. Lipscomb For more information contact Shelia at dance. [email protected]. AND THEN THERE WAS ONE!—Jim Bobo from dancers who would manage the two halls and In a recent article in The CALLER I wrote, "When military units are decimated to the point of inefficiency the various units are combined and are referred to as consolidated. Is it time for us to consider consolidating clubs?" I would like to revisit this idea. Square dancing is "friendship set to music" performed by eight people at the direction of a prompter (the caller). You don't even have to know the other people in the square to enjoy the activity. But as gregarious animals we have created tribes, "clubs." Members of our club are our extended family. We are loyal to our caller; devoted to our club and pleased to display our club badge and banner. I suggest that it is time to discard this parochial attitude and act in the best interest of the various dance genre associated with GMS&RDA. I feel that at least five square dance clubs should merge, BnB, SnS, PHP, PnP & DDD. Mary Ann Walker has determined that the Colonial Park United Methodist Church hall used by BnB is available both Thursday and Friday nights. I think we should continue to dance on Saturdays at the Bartlett United Methodist Church where the PnP currently dance. Each of these halls will dance 6 to 8 squares and this would give the mainstream dancer the opportunity to dance 3 nights a week. The Caller run Top Spinners would continue to dance on Thursday. The local clubs, BnB, SnS, PHP, DDD & PnP, would cease to exist, replaced by a team elected the events on the 3 dance nights. The callers, cuers, C/W and clogging leaders in counsel with the team would determine fees, the callers' assignments and dance programs. Maybe: such a program would help acquire and hold new dancers; return Plus/Advance dancers to the mix and improve the skills of all dancers; callers would be more challenged; cost overruns could be defrayed by GMS&RDA as was done in the "Central Hall" period; we would offer dancing only on Friday and Saturday nights if TS proves adequate to needs; we would organized day time events on Saturdays. Can I get an amen? Anyone interested in discussing such a drastic proposal? If there is enough interest, I'll arrange a group meet. (Otherwise maybe two or three of us can meet in some phone booth.) Contact me at [email protected] or 901-604-2733 m Page 6 The CALLER, Memphis, TN, June, 2015 www.memphissrd.com SECRETARY’S CORNER —Merrie Jo (Al) Poortvliet The GMS & RDA meeting was called to order May 19th, 2015 at 7:18 by Dorothy Bobo, President. In attendance were 3 officers, 7 delegates from 7 clubs, 1 state delegate and 4 visitors. The April minutes were corrected. The state meeting will be in Kingsport not Johnson City. The treasurer’s report was approved. Advertising: A chairman is needed. Membership: Reporting for Mary Ann Walker, Dorothy reported 128 members plus 27 members exempt of payment . Sunshine: Peggy Vanlandingham mailed 5 get well cards. TN State Association report: The state dance will be Saturday June 6th at Kingsport, TN and the meeting will be Sunday June 7th. The October meeting will be held in Memphis the same weekend as the Festival. Anyone wishing to attend state meetings are welcome. They meet on Sunday from 9-12 a.m. the day after the state dance. The Caller: The Caller: Jim Bobo reported that because of the low number of paid GMS&RDA members and the resultant low number of The CALLER printed, we have a new Printer. The print quality of the May issue was less than our previous editions, but this will improve. In analyzing the production and mail costs to distribute The CALLER as is currently done, Jim determined that we could save money by ceasing to deliver 9 Club copies, 13 complimentary copies and 9 to members who receive both electronic and paper copies. The June issue will be the last one mailed to 24 past-due members until they pay their 2016 GMS&RDA dues. Jim suggested no changes be made at present and noted that If anyone has questions about their membership status or want to make changes in their mailing method, electronic or paper, please notify Jim Bobo at 9260 Laurel Hill South, Olive Branch, MS 38654 or [email protected] Special Activities reports: Club specials: Add that the B&B’s are closed May 22nd and 29th. 53rd Mid-South Festival: More advertising sales are needed to help fund the festival. Everything else is going along well. Christmas & A&R Dance: It was suggested last month to ask different clubs to provide a hall for the dance to save money. Top Spinners has graciously offered their hall for this year. Yvonne made the suggestion that from now on it go alphabetically for Association clubs. Mary Ann Walker, Mary Ann Moats, Justin Russell and Jim Bobo were assigned to a committee to set up guidelines. Old business: Dan Torvick is the parliamentarian for the rest of the year. A motion was made to take the tabled motion off the table. It failed for lack of a second. After discussion, it was suggested that the Bill Crawford Award be researched some more to find the rules since it has not been awarded for many years. A committee TN State Area I officers: of past presidents Yvonne Johnson, Dan Torvick, and VP. J J (Yvonne) Johnson 662-342-2714 Mary Ann Walker was appointed.
