Most of the employees, both and Central departments, went on a two-day holiday despite stern warnings from district authorities to attend the offices. The bandh called by All Achik Youth Federation (AAYF) against the repeated extensions given to Congress-ruled Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) ended today paralysing normal life across the region while there were no reports of any untoward inci- dents so far. The ‘non-cooperation movement’ and night blockades on May 19 and May 20 were, however, supported by the Purno Sangma-led National People’s Party, the Garo Hills State Garo Hills bandh Movement Committee (GHSMC) and also by the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) While in some places like Tura some state government offices remained open, the majority of the region took a two-day holiday from work. The first day saw about 75% attendance in Tura but the number dropped drastically today, with only the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police registering some form of attendance. All the other districts registered very low attendance, with some just managing to get into double digits. Shops and business establishments remained closed for the past two days with even medical stores not choosing to take the “risk”. Vehicles displaying car passes were the only ones on the road though security was increased in view of the call. The night road blockade is set to continue till 5 am tomorrow. The committee has also echoed similar views which different political parties have all along been airing when it stressed the fact that the government needs to clear the Bills, and amendment can always be made, if required, by both the councils. The increased demand to pass the village administration bills also came in view of the last year’s Meghalaya High Court ruling which has clipped the powers of traditional heads. The decision was taken at the first sitting of the 50-member committee headed by government’s Chief Adviser DD Lapang.
