In court papers filed on Thursday, prosecutors said Gupta is “not an innocent man” as he abused his position as a corporate insider by repeatedly divulging inside information to Rajaratnam, who reaped millions of dollars in illegal profits based on Gupta’s tips. Gupta, 66, is seeking to set aside his conviction, based on the Second Circuit’s decision in the case against Newman, in which the court ruled that prosecutors must show that a defendant got a personal benefit for passing illegal tips. Convicted in 2012, Gupta began serving a two-year prison term on insider trading charges in June, 2014. He was also fined USD five million. Stressing that the personal aspect of Gupta-Rajaratnam relationship was “undeniable,” the government said Gupta personally invested in Galleon and participated in several actual and contemplated ventures with him. “In sum, Gupta’s financial interests were heavily aligned with Galleon’s. Rajaratnam bestowed corporate titles on Gupta, gave him an ongoing financial interest in Galleon International...and generally granted Gupta a level of access and corporate prestige that Gupta craved. As part of their business relationship, each had shared expectations. Rajaratnam expected, and Gupta consistently delivered, inside information that Gupta possessed as a corporate insider. For those tips, Gupta clearly expected potential pecuniary gain in return,” the prosecutors said. NEW YORK, APR 4: India-born exGoldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta’s conviction on insider trading charges should not be thrown out as the government provided “overwhelming” proof against him for passing on illegal information in return for “expected potential pecuniary gains,” US prosecutors said. The prosecutors said the IIT and Harvard-educated former McKinsey head, who is serving a two-year sentence, had a “powerful” financial incentive to tip his billionaire hedgefund operator friend Raj Rajaratnam. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, submitted a memorandum on behalf of the government opposing Gupta’s plea to throw out his conviction based on a recent ruling by an appeals court in which it reversed the insider convic- Gold, silver prices recover on renewed demand Newly built 9500 sq.ft. godown available for rent at Datalpara Kotabari, Guwahati. PTI Photo Levi Strauss saves water through sustainability initiative GUWAHATI, APR 4 : Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&Co.) has announced that it has saved 1 billion litres of water since 2011 through its Water<Less™ process, which reduces the water used in garment finishing by up to 96 percent. This announcement, stated a press release, coincides with the release of LS&Co.’s new Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), an update on the company’s groundbreaking 2007 study that examined the environmental impact of LS&Co. products. The new study analysed the complete product life cycle, probing deeper into the environmental impacts of cotton in key growing regions, apparel production and distribution in a range of locations, and consumer washing and drying habits in key markets. The study shows that of the nearly 3,800 litres of water used throughout the lifetime of a pair of jeans, cotton cultivation (68%) and consumer use (23%) continue to have the most significant impact on water consumption. Consumer care is also responsible for the most significant energy use and climate impact, representing 37 percent of the 33.4 ki- lograms of carbon dioxide emitted during the lifecycle of a jean. The new LCA expands on previous research to better understand the impact of cotton cultivation and includes data from the world’s primary cotton producing countries, including the United States, China, Brazil, India, Pakistan and Australia. It also analyzes consumer care data from new markets, including China, France and the United Kingdom, to understand the costs and benefits of differences in washing habits. To reduce the impact of cotton consumption, LS&Co. is working with the Better Cotton Initiative® (BCI) to train farmers to grow cotton using less water. Based on the latest BCI harvest data available, in 2013, cotton farmers in China reduced their water use by 23 percent compared with farmers who were not using BCI techniques. LS&Co. plans to continue working with its global suppliers with the goal of sourcing approximately 75 percent Better Cotton by 2020, up from 6 percent today. LS&Co. will also continue to work toward using less water during manufacturing by expanding the Water<Less™ process to include more Levi’s® products, such as tops. By 2020, the Levi’s® brand aims to make 80 percent of its products using Water<Less™ techniques, up from nearly 25 percent today. The new LCA also reveals that Americans use more water and energy to wash their jeans than consumers in China, France and the U.K. It shows that consumers in China wear their jeans, on average, four times before tossing them into the wash — and if American consumers did this, they could reduce the water and climate change impact from washing their jeans by 50 percent. “It’s time to rethink autopilot behaviors like washing your jeans after every wear because in many cases it’s simply not necessary,” said Chip Bergh, CEO and president of LS&Co. “Our LCA findings have pushed us as a company to rethink how we make our jeans, and we’re proud that our water stewardship actions to date have saved 1 billion liters of water. By engaging and educating consumers, we can fundamentally change the environmental impact of apparel and, ideally, how consumers think about the clothes they wear every day.” Grub Fest : A chance to savour delectable delicacies NEW DELHI, APR 4: Delhiites have a chance to savour a variety of food this weekend. Lebanese, Chinese, North Indian, Italian, Mughlai, Mexican, Coastal, Sushi and a variety of other cuisines from nearly 50 city eateries have been brought under one roof in a ‘Grub Fest’ organised here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Lawns. A brainchild of passionate foodies, Chaitanya Mathur and Mani Singh Cheema, the event was inspired after extensive travelling throughout the world and attending various food festivals. “The idea to bring a food carnival like this was conceptulised four years ago. After extensive travelling to International Food Festivals like the ‘Taste of London’ which impressed us, we executed our plans and came up with this food carnival bringing in wide variety of food for our guests visiting the food fest,” says Mathur. The food carnival, which makes its debut this year got over 150 plus queries from various eateries and restaurants from which it brought over 70 eateries under its umbrella including wide variety of famous restaurants and cuisines on pop ups and food trucks. Salads to north Indian food, vegetarian to Mughalai, coastal food to Chinese and many more, the food carnival attempts to bring a variety of food to the capital for three days, ending April 5. “We wanted the foodies to taste different cuisines under the same roof and hence came up with this idea of laying cuisines from all over the world. We want the people to come for all the three days,” says Mathur. Participants of the three day food-extravaganza include var- ious restaurants like Royal China, United Coffee House, Zizo, Ploof, Zambar, Nawabi, Smokey's, Fio, Town Hall, Dao, Switch, NYC Pie, Kathi’s, Shiv Sagar etc. There is also a bar done by A Ta Maison & PCO. The dishes have a blend of Italian and Mediterranean coupled together and twisted in my own style. The ingredients used are fresh and have been taken from all over the world,” says Chef Mohsin Sidana who had laid an elaborate menu for his guests including Belgian Chicken Waffles with Cheddar Cheese, lambs, fries among others. The ‘Bombay Shivsagar’ which has chains in different parts of the country including Kolkata, Mumbai, Kanpur, Gujarat etc serves up Vada Pav and Pav Bhaji from Mumbai.
