Principal’s Report
The middle week of this term was incredibly busy, and many teachers and
students are really pressed for time to complete work. However, the activities
that did occur were excellent, and well worth the disruption.
On Wednesday 19th May the teachers had a professional development day
that focused on our Instructional Model and use of ICT to enhance teaching
and learning. The sessions were all run using the expertise we have within
the school except for a couple of wellbeing sessions where we had an outside
facilitator. We are really fortunate to have such an accomplished and dedicated
staff who are always ready to continue their own learning.
House Music Competition was a highlight of the week, with Kenny being the
overall winner of the perpetual trophy. All houses enthusiastically participated
and the student leaders must be congratulated on their organisation, rehearsal
and performance on the day. We have some very talented musicians in the
school, and the music teachers, under Ms Anna Berlingeri, all assisted to make
the day a success.
For most adults, the adolescent years occupy a significant place in our
memories. Give an adult a series of random prompts and cues, and odds are
he or she will recall a disproportionate number of memories from adolescence.
Memories from the ages of 15 to 25 are vividly retained. No matter how old
you are, the music you listen to for the rest of your life is probably dominated
by what you listened to when you were an adolescent.
Most teenagers today spend just 16 hours per week interacting with adults
and 60 with their cohort. A century ago, it was almost exactly the reverse.
When children spend so much time apart from adult company they start to
generate a culture with independent values and priorities.
Though adolescents may want nothing more than to be able to define
themselves, they discover that high school is one of the hardest places to do it.
At that time they experience the most social fear, they have the least control; at
that time they’re most sensitive to the impressions of others, they’re put into
an environment where it’s easy to be labelled.
To learn more about how to live with your adolescent, parents are invited
to a free session “Navigating Adolescence” at 6.30pm on Wednesday 17th June
(see page 7 for details). As a school we are trying to offer parents support at
this most interesting time.

Semester 1 Examinations
Semester 1 examinations will take place between Monday 1st and Friday 5th June.
Year 11 exams run on all days. There will be no Year 11 classes during this time. Year 11 students will only be
required at school for their exams. However, if any Year 11s are undertaking a Unit 3/4 subject they must attend these
scheduled classes unless they have an exam at that time.
Year 10 exams are scheduled for Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th June. No Year 10 classes will run during this time.
Year 10 students will only be required at school for their exams.
Year 9 exams are scheduled for Thursday 4th and Friday 5th June. No Year 9 classes will run during this time. Year
9s will only be required at school for their exams.
Students are free to make use of the library for private study at other times.
The actual examination timetable will be distributed to all students and can also be found on page 8.
Students are encouraged to arrive early and to ensure they know their exam locations. Full winter uniform must be
worn. If a student arrives to an examination in incorrect uniform they may be required to sit it at an alternative time.
If a student is unable to attend due to illness or another reason, parents are asked to ring the absence line on 9581
5236. Students will be required to sit the missed examination at another time.
Students are reminded that normal examination rules apply and include NO talking or communication between
students. MOBILE PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES MUST NOT BE TAKEN INTO THE EXAMINATION ROOM
AND MUST BE LEFT IN LOCKED LOCKERS. Bags must also not be taken to the venue, but must be left in lockers.
These examinations are important for students as this type of assessment is a significant part of the overall grade
in Year 12 subjects. They assist in developing the skills that are necessary to achieve each student’s best performance.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN assessments were undertaken by the Year 7 and 9 students last week. I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate all students who completed this assessment process on the way they applied themselves
to the tasks given. There was a real sense of purpose and application by all students.
Results will be forwarded to parents in late August/early September. The results will also further assist the staff to
tailor learning for all students.
Mr David Russell
Assistant Principal

School Council Report
The third College Council meeting of the year on the 19th May saw the election of the office bearers for 2015. This
was held over from the last meeting due to a number of absences. Congratulations to Elizabeth Bradley (President),
Gary Hughes (Vice President) and James Malliaros (Treasurer).
Another point of interest was the attendance of the state member for Sandringham, Murray Thompson. Mr Thompson
has recently written a letter of support for the school to the Victorian Minster for Education, James Merlino, seeking
funding for the renovation/replacement of our ageing buildings. Although this is a positive development, now is not the
time to lessen the pressure on our local government representatives. We encourage all members of the school community
to continue to communicate the needs of the school to our local members, both state and federal. It is only together that
we can ensure the school receives the necessary funding to provide a suitable learning environment for our daughters.

On Friday the Year 11 students underwent a GAT familiarisation session with the English and Maths Domain Leaders.
This was designed to introduce them to the process and help them become familiar with the format. This Friday Year
12s will attend these sessions also led by Mrs Rees and Mr Hughes.
On Wednesday the girls who have returned the flu vaccination forms will receive their injections.
Year 11s are currently completing their last outcomes before the exams which commence with English on June

undertaking the final SACs in Unit 3. Year 11 students do not attend their Unit 3 and 4 classes when they have an
exam on. They are expected to ascertain what work was completed during class and catch up. Please ensure that your
daughters have read their timetables correctly as there is no provision for rescheduling. Please note, students are only
required at school when they are undertaking an exam or Unit 3 and 4 classes and alliance classes.
Everyone attending the VCE Ball on June 10th should have submitted their contracts and paid by now.
On June 11th, VCE students are not required to attend school in period 1. Period 2 sees the commencement of Unit

2015 MGSC House Music Competition
…and the winner is Kenny House!!!
The MGSC 2015 House Music Competition, adjudicated by Mr Ian
Nisbet, was held on Thursday 21st May in the College Gymnasium.
This was the third year that the whole College was involved and it was
our biggest and best yet!
The competition commenced with the House Soloist and
Instrumental Ensemble performances. The soloists were selected
as the best individual performers from each house, and their
performances encompassed a range of instruments and genres
including an original guitar solo loop track, two vocalists and a classical
pianist. It was wonderful to see each performance celebrated with
rapturous applause, cheering and standing ovations. Monique Kuhn
claimed victory for Jackson House for the second year in a row with her stirring rendition of Chopin’s Op 66. Fantastie
- Impromptu.
The Instrumental Conductors chose pieces that would complement the preferred style and ability of their
ensemble. These included Pirates of the Caribbean, Wallace & Gromit, The Incredibles and Happy by Pharrell Williams.
The competition was tight, but Melba House was victorious under the direction of Merry Hunt.
It was now time for the Choral Competition which included every student and staff member in the College. The
House Captains had taught their house a House Chant, the set song – Katy Perry’s Roar, and a House own choice Choral
piece selected by the Captains and Choral conductor. The first house to take the stage was Jackson. They performed
their House Chant with vigour and accentuating arm choreography led by Kelly Macquire and Steph Canty, which saw
them take out first place for this category.
Kenny House were the winners of both sections of the Choral Competition. Shannon Connelly led the house to
victory with their energetic singing of set song, Roar. For the own choice Choral piece, Kenny House shone once again
singing Pompeii, under the direction of Brittany Woodlock. The Kenny choir impressed our adjudicator with their
featured soloists and beautiful harmonies and were supported by accompanists Hannah Pilcher and Shanon McKenzie.
When it was time for the adjudication results, the audience erupted with cheers, applause and feet stomping as
the winners of each category were announced. None was louder though than the cheers that came from Kenny House,
who celebrated their first victory of House Music Competition as a whole school event.

“One World. One Environment”
Hey everyone! It’s Skye Cardwell from the Environment team. I would like to remind you that World Environment
Day is on Friday 5th June. This event has been celebrated globally since 1973. The theme for this year is ‘Sustainable
consumption and production’, so I’d like you to be aware of how much your household consumes and take a positive
action for the environment by trying to reduce this, which consequently reduces the waste we all produce. Students
should also remember to throw away their rubbish at lunchtime as it ends up lying around in the gardens. The whole
school can get involved by wearing a green accessory to express their enthusiasm for a green world. On Thursday 11th
June our team will be selling seeds for $2 a punnet during lunchtime in the canteen courtyard to fund our gardening
project at the front of the school. I hope to see many of our students there.

5 HEALTHY WAYS TO MANAGE EMOTIONS
We are a few weeks away from the
start of the mid-year examination period
for our Year 9-12 students. If students are
getting a bit nervous this is generally a good
sign. It normally means they would like to
perform well in their exams and recognises
they have to finalise their preparations. So
what can they do to perform well in their
exams?
Here are some hints:
• Review course material and identify
areas of weakness.
• Prepare additional revision notes and
practice questions/answers to address
these areas.
• Make sure they know the scope of the
work covered in their examinations and
compile sample questions/answers.
• Undertake trial exams under exam
conditions to help simulate the real
situation.
• Set a study timetable that accounts for
all subjects and the revision required.
• Form a study group of friends that will
actually help them to prepare for the
exams.
• Make sure they take some breaks and
where possible, participate in sports or
other outdoor activities. History shows
the best students have a good balance
between studies and other activities in
their lives.
• Develop routines that allow them to
control any feelings of tension. This
may be listening to music, taking walks
or just “chilling”.
• Last, but not least, do their best and
have some fun.
By Michael Grose
Here are 5 healthy ways to manage your emotions that you can pass
on to your children:
1. Breathe deeply
The trick here is to take deep breaths, rather than shallow breaths.
The easiest way to breathe deeply is to sit up straight (or stand up
straight) count to 3 quietly while breathing through your nose, and count
to 5 while breathing out. Breathe slowly and deeply. You may even feel a
little ‘heady’, which indicates deep (and low) breathing.
2. Use a positive reappraisal
Sometimes known as positive reframing, positive reappraisal is a
simple technique you can use to help you look at a situation or event in a
different light. Emotions are caused not by an event, but by the way we
look at an event. A wedding speech to one person is a chance to strut
your stuff (so they feel excited), while someone else may see it at as a
nightmare (so they feel anxious). Change the way you view something
and you’ll better be able to manage your emotional response. “This is
a challenge, not a problem” is a catch-all reappraisal. The more specific
the reappraisal the more effective it will be.
3. Use positive, REALISTIC self-talk
Next time you catch yourself talking yourself or something down
replace the negative with something realistic but more positive.
Something like “I’ve done it in the past and I survived. So I should be able
to do it again.”
Repeat this a few times and your emotional state will shift to a better
one. You may not exactly be jumping over the moon with confidence but
you will feel less stressed. That’s what emotional management is about.
4. Have constructive habits and hobbies
One of the tenets of good emotional health is that a person needs
hobbies and interests that lift them up, making life enjoyable. Singletracked lives– all work and no play – are recipes for emotional disasters.
If you can relate to this, then I suggest you take the time to find a hobby
or interest that juices you up.
5. Seek professional counselling
We all get stuck from time to time by aspects of our lives, such as
experiencing loss, transition or trauma. When this happens we need a
professional who can help us take the steps needed to become ‘unstuck’.
A well-known song by US singer Kenny Roger song went, “You’ve got to
know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em and know when to walk
away.” I’d like to add another line- “You’ve got to know when to get some
help.” Seeking help is something we are getting better at as a community,
but we still have a long way to go until it accepted and normalised.
