Emerson St. Program for Teens & Young Adults
Work & School Workshops:



Computer Basics for Work and School: This weekly workshop will cover the many uses of
computers on the job and at school. Each week, we will focus on a different topic, including--“Social Media Do’s and Don’ts,” “Are Online Classes Really for Me?,” and “A Crash Course in
Resume Writing.” All materials will be provided. Some computer experience is preferred. Ages
14-26. Instructed by Becky Armstrong.
Fashion for Your Future: This weekly workshop will address appropriate attire and hygiene for
meeting with employers and going to interviews. Will provide information on where you can
find clothing closets to obtain professional outfits and locations of places with free or cheap
haircuts. Nail polish and other hygiene supplies will be provided for demonstrations. Ages 1426 and all genders are welcome! Instructed by Erin Plonk.
Stick With It!: This monthly workshop is designed to help you stay positive and focused. Learn
how to motivate yourself through the journey of finding a job, going through school, and other
things that make you go… “ARGH!” The only experience you need is your own. Ages 14-26.
Instructed by Stephanie Crookston.
Social, Health, & Wellness Workshops:








Life Strategies: This weekly workshop will teach you to engage in self-reflection, examine
thoughts and feelings, learn new skills, and explore ways to lead a happier and healthier
life! Workshop will be a hands-on learning experience that uses journaling activities, selfassessments, handouts, and worksheets. Ages 14-26. Instructed by Sarah Thompson.
Grillin’ with Guys: Join this workshop for a hefty session of man vs. food! We will grill outside
and enjoy the fruits… scratch that, BBQ of our labor. Learn to properly and safely prepare grilled
delights. Guys ages 14-26. Instructed by Wes Baker.
Wii Here for Games!: Join this workshop for video games, board games, tunes, and fun. Bring
your favorite CD and we will put it into rotation for a spin. We want to get what makes you
click—get it?! We will also discuss what types of programs you would like to see here in the
future. Ages 14-26. Instructed by Wes Baker.
Hands in the Dirt: This hands-on workshop introduces the basics of gardening: planting,
tending, and harvesting. Come get your hands dirty, while enjoying the beauty of our garden
and the fruits of our labor! Ages 14-26. Instructed by Chilli Coldiron.
Trash to Treasure: During this monthly workshop we will take a walk around the block and pick
up trash to turn into treasure! Get exercise, help us clean up our neighborhood, and learn how
recycled materials can be upcycled into works of art! Ages 14-26. Instructed by Sarah Thompson.
Game On!: This monthly workshop allows us to get to know our each other while having fun.
Join us for reinventing Twister in a whole new way! Ages 14-26. Instructed by All Staff
Sushi Roll: In this hands-on activity, we will learn the ancient Japanese practice of rolling sushi!
Dive into exciting flavors and learn the history of this Asian cuisine. Ages 14-26. Instructed by
Becky Armstrong.
Did You Hear That?: In this workshop we will learn about and discuss today’s biggest current
events. We’ll cover issues ranging from local happenings, arts and entertainment, sports,
polictics, culture, and much more! Ages 14-26. Instructed by All Staff.


Picnic on the Porch: Let’s head outside, enjoy snacks, and company on our Emerson St. porch.
Ages 14-26. Instructed by All Staff.
Science Experiment: Is it a liquid? Or is it a solid? The world may never know. Come join us and
discover a fun new material! Ages 14-26. Instructed by Becky Armstrong.
Art & Music Workshops:




Art of Well-Being: This weekly workshop will teach you the therapeutic benefits of artmaking. Learn how the art process can help improve self-esteem, reduce stress, express
feelings, as well as improve overall well-being. Art materials will be provided. No art experience
needed, and all are welcome! Ages 14-26. Instructed by Sarah Thompson.
Drum Circle: This workshop requires no musical skill or experience. We use drums to express
ourselves, expel energy, connect and communicate with one another, and learn more about our
emotional and musical selves. All are welcome to join us for music making with use of drums
and percussion instruments! Ages 14-26. Instructed by Casey Ehresman.
Zentangles: This monthly workshop will introduce a drawing meditation technique that gives
you a chance to explore the world of design and pattern. While you connect with this simple
exercise with your mind, you can also relax and feel at peace by completely focusing your
energy. Art materials will be provided. Ages 14-26. Instructed by Katie Carr-Anderson.
Culture- Outside the Box: This workshop allows you to explore your culture outside the box by
addressing norms, beliefs, traditions and influences of teen and young adult culture. We will
create a “culture box” to identify your personal culture, and talk about how family, school,
society, and other influences shape your life as a teen and young adult. Creating your own
culture box will help you identify who you are and discover and embrace who you will become!
Art materials will be provided. Ages 14-26. Instructed by Michelle Savoy.
