New PSA Highlights Lifelong Effects of FASD
The Trust developed a new PSA focused on prevention of Fetal Alcohol
Spectrum Disorders. FASD is an umbrella term describing the range of
effects that can occur in an individual prenatally exposed to alcohol.
These effects may include physical, mental, behavioral and/or learning
disabilities with lifelong implications. Alaska has the highest rate of FASD
in the nation and more than 120 Alaska children are diagnosed with
FASD each year.
This PSA is the first tool developed in a statewide, multimedia campaign
to begin in March. The purpose of this campaign is to provide education
about FASD and its lifelong effects and to motivate women to learn about
their pregnancy status before consuming alcohol. The intent is to inform,
move and motivate residents in an effort to prevent occurrences of FASD
in Alaska.
While there is a high level of knowledge that alcohol use during
pregnancy is harmful to an unborn baby, many women receive
misinformation about alcohol and pregnancy, including the consequences
of alcohol use, safe times to drink during pregnancy and safe amounts or
types of alcohol.
The campaign will increase knowledge in the following areas:
Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects and brain
damage
It is best to stop drinking before conception
It is safest not to drink any alcohol during pregnancy
There is no known safe time or amount to drink during pregnancy

Our New Website Is Easy on the Eyes!
The Trust recently launched a new website, www.mhtrust.org. Users can now more easily access
information. The new platform is also mobile friendly, making it easy to navigate from a mobile device.

Description: Developed by P.K. Beville of Second Wind Dreams, the Virtual Dementia Tour provides
participants with an experiential simulation to help understand what dementia may be like. Participants
will develop a greater understanding of the challenges faced daily by those with dementia and how
behaviors can be viewed as coping strategies. The result is better care by care partners.

mental health emergency and how to get a person at risk the help they need. It is also an action plan that
can result in lives saved.

Description: The purpose of this two-hour per week Dementia Care Essentials class is to enable the
learner to identify strategies they will implement into their practice that will increase a sense of safety,
security, comfort and quality of life for the person living with dementia. Participants will learn a variety of
components of dementia care including communication and how to address behavioral challenges. This
continuing nursing education activity was approved by Montana Nurses Association, an accredited
approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The registration

Just as CPR training helps a layperson with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart
attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health
crisis until appropriate professional help arrives.

Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority: 2014 Annual Report
The newly published annual report provides a look at how The Trust is creating change and financially
thriving. The Trust’s annual budget provides funding for the state’s mental health program and funds
projects and activities in five designated focus areas that address issues with significant impact on our
beneficiaries. These focus areas allow us to strategically align our investments to make significant strides
in affecting change and improving the lives of beneficiaries and their families.
SAMHSA: Behavioral Health Barometer Alaska (2014)
This is the second edition of the Behavioral Health Barometer: Alaska, one of a series of state and
national reports that provide a snapshot of behavioral health in the United States. The reports present a
set of substance use and mental health indicators as measured through data collection efforts sponsored
by SAMHSA, including the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the National Survey of
Substance Abuse Treatment Services. This array of indicators provides a unique overview of the nation’s
behavioral health at a point in time as well as a mechanism for tracking change and trends over time.
