Foster Grandparents Program
The Foster Grandparent Program has been sponsored locally by the Council on
Aging, Inc., serving St. Clair County since 1977. It is a grant funded program,
supported additionally through the local senior millage, fundraisers, and
donations.
The main reason volunteers list for continuing as a foster grandparent is the
knowledge that they are making a difference in the life of a child. It is a win-win
program for seniors, the children, and the community.
Two of our foster grandparents here at Michigamme received special awards. Foster Grandparent, Sandra King (Mrs.
Sander’s room) received the Neal Mason Heart of Service Award, 10 years of service award and a Certificate of Special
Congressional Recognition from Candice Miller. Foster Grandparent, Ken Barker (Mr. Telfer’s class) received an 8 years
of service award and the Neal Mason Heart of Service Award.
We appreciate and thank all of our foster grandparents here at Michigamme Elementary.

New Arrivals at Michigamme
This month, the students at Michigamme were able to learn about hatching
chickens. Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Prout had some fertilized eggs and an
incubator set up in the showcase outside her room. Everyone was excited
about the arrival of the eggs. After waiting and waiting, there was some
indication that the chicks were ready to hatch. On Monday, we saw a small
crack in a few of the eggs. The process chicks go through as they hatch is a
long process, taking up to 12 hours, so we knew there was still some time to wait. By Tuesday morning there
were 2 baby chicks hatched and more on the way! By Wednesday we had10 baby chicks!
The newly-hatched chicks stay in the incubator until their feathers are a bit dry. They are then transferred to a
special box made just for them. The showcase is a favorite place for students (and staff) to stop and check on
our new arrivals.

Butterflies, flower gardens and a picnic luncheon are
just some of the ways our WONDERFUL PTA shows
our staff how much they are appreciated here at
