The Michigan Guardianship Association is very excited to announce our 2015 Spring Conference. This
fabulous event boasts one and a half days of education, networking and fun. With an amazing array
of speakers and estimated 9 continuing education credits hours, it promises not to disappoint.
We are honored to welcome Gerald Shiener, MD and Michigan State Public Administrator, Michael E.
Moody as our Keynote speakers.
Along with education, the conference provides opportunity for our hard working members to let
their hair down. Located at the wonderful Shoreline Inn and Conference Center in Muskegon, there
are plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge. This gorgeous facility sits on the shore of the
Muskegon Lake and is within walking distance of a shopping, breweries and so much more.
A welcome mixer on Wednesday evening, from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm will help “kick off” the event. We
hope you will join us for a cash bar, light appetizers and a beautiful view.

Hotel Accommodations
The Michigan Guardianship Association is glad to provide discounted accommodation rates
to its attendees. Our conference will be held at the beautiful Shoreline Inn Hotel & Conference
Center. We STRONGLY recommend that you make reservations as soon as possible. Room
availability cannot be guaranteed after April 30th.
Each room reservation includes complimentary wireless, refrigerator, microwave and coffee
pot. The hotel features an indoor pool with two hot tubs (open 24 hours), an outdoor pool,
business center and a small convenience store.

* Does not include 11% taxes and other fees applied by the venue per night.
Please note that it is the conference attendees responsibility to coordinate hotel
accommodations and understand the facilities policies.
Registration Information
Conference Registration:
Complete the conference registration form and return as indicated. Each attendee must
submit a complete form. Fees include tuition, educational materials, snacks, and meals. We do
accept walk-in registrations.
Online Registration:
MGA is glad to accept event registration and credit card payments online.

Refunds and Cancellations:
Requests for refunds will be honored when received by April 30th. No refunds will be made after
April 30th. There is a $30.00 administration fee for each refund; substitutions may be made at
any time.
Continuing Education:
MGA will provide a signed certificate of attendance for approximately 9 clock hours for each
participant. Certificates will be signed by MGA staff after each session and will be collected
prior to the Judges Corner session on Friday, May 15th to be recorded. Please note that if you
must leave the conference prior to that session, you must have your certificate recorded by the
Administrator. Certificates that are not recorded with MGA cannot be validated. Please see the
registration desk or contact the administrator with any questions.
Dietary Requirements:
MGA makes every effort to provide meals that accommodate the dietary requirements of our
members. If you have a request please be sure to communicate so on your registration form.
Please note that we must alert the staff of any food allergy or dietary requirements before the
event to ensure proper accommodation. If you have questions, concerns or specific directions
for the preparation of your meal please contact the MGA Administrator, Sara Dziurman, at your
earliest possible opportunity.

What if I do... What if I don’t ?

This highly interactive session will discuss the challenges inherent as a guardian in making
decisions on life prolonging interventions. Attention toward understanding that prolonging
life may not always lead to quality of life. The participants will review strategies to enhance
understanding toward discovering goals for health, well-being and end of life for the individual
for whom they advocate. Benefits and burdens of common medical interventions: artificial
nutrition and hydration, tube feedings, mechanical ventilation, hospice will be discussed.

Culture of Gentleness: More Than Being Kind!
Kim Juntti, Director, The Michigan Center for Positive Living Supports
Supporting individuals with complex needs and those who support them requires sensitivity to
trauma and a unified culture and strategies to bring about sustainable change. This presentation
will discuss 6 Key Elements of a “Culture of Gentleness” and examine missing elements often
identified in our quest to help. The presentation will also identify some interactions tools and
elements of effective planning. Participants will walk away with an understanding of how they
can improve relationships and outcomes while staying true to their mission.

Members who would like to run for a position on the board must submit their request to the
MGA Administrator no later than May 1st to be included in the printed materials. Applicants
who submit request after May 1st will be asked to present their intent to run during the election

Guardianship Of A Ward with No Known Heirs.... Why The State Is Involved?

In this presentation, guardians will learn about the role of the State Public Administrator in
Michigan as well as when and why a guardian should copy the State Public Administrator with
filings made before the probate court. This information will assist you in responding to requests
from the State Public Administrator regarding your guardianships and will better prepare you
to respond to questions from the probate court when dealing with wards that have no known
heirs.
