Police News
Fire Brigade News
The ICC Cricket World Cup is almost over and the Black
Caps are right there at the end - Sunday is going to be a
nail-biter for some! Whatever the outcome, everyone is
looking forward to watching some top-class cricket.
The month past has been relatively quiet :
It is quite remarkable to have been through such a dry
hot summer with so few call-outs. So on behalf of the
brigade a huge thank you to all for being so careful and
observing the fire ban. The Otago Rural Fire authority
revoked the prohibited fire season on the 21st March
and replaced it with a ‘restricted’ fire season which
means outdoor burning in rural areas require a fire
permit. Permits cost nothing and are available from
the authority by phoning 0800 673 473 or online at
www.otagoruralfire.org.nz.
Like most organisations
doing things online is preferred and it will make
renewing permits in the future a simpler process. During
a fire ban should we get called to a fire we are required
to extinguish it without delay. In a restricted fire
season if we are called to a fire for which a permit is
required and no permit can be produced the same rule
applies. So please don’t put yourself or us in an
embarrassing situation. I have received a good number
of phone calls about the fire season status and I very
much appreciate these as it clearly shows that most
people in the district are trying to do the right thing.
1.
27 February - Old Dunstan Road - return visit
within 2 weeks to locate fisherman who was
reported over due
2.
16 March - Hells Angels at Momona Airport not too
happy when told by Air NZ staff they could not
board with gang regalia on - after missing 1 flight
and much angst finally boarded last flight of day
o return home to Auckland
3.
18 March - assist Court baliffs with debt recovery,
debt to be sorted within 10 days & vehicle
clamped at address until debt paid
4.
20 March - Operation Safer Southern - emphasis
on STOP/Give Way signs, seat-belts & red traffic
lights
I have been kept busy doing relieving shifts at Mosgiel,
including one week as the Acting Sergeant. This was a
bit more variety than usual, and included me strapping
on the taser and firearms several times during the same
week!
Police have pulled back from plans to cut the number of
Constables in Bluff from 3 to 1 after local residents
protested. Police have confirmed that Bluff will
remain at 2 Constables and the 3rd position would be
reassigned to Invercargill. It should be noted as a
partial win for the Bluff community who collected over
1300 signatures against the Police proposal.
There has been interest in Firearms Licences - once
Easter is out of the way, I am keen to do a 'testing' night
for those interested.
I will sort a date for the next Taieri Pet.
A Blue Light disco is to be held in Mosgiel on Friday 24
April.
It will run from 6-8pm in the St John Hall,
Hartstonge Avenue, Mosgiel. Entry will be gold coin &
supper provided.
For those requiring any statutory declarations to be
signed and notarised - I am able to do this service.
Remember, if you have something to report, notice
anything suspicious or amiss, not happy with some
situation, want a raffle drawn or just to talk,
ring the Police.
\
From time to time I am asked to help with water
supplies. The Fire Service has legislative privilege to
any supply of water for the purpose of fire fighting and I
think most people will understand this. For training
purposes we need the consent of property owners and I
can happily say that no one has ever turned us down.
The brigade is not permitted to supply domestic water
but in the past we have helped with pumping domestic
supplies within a property.
Recently I spent the best part of an afternoon with the
area manager dealing with brigade issues and updating
the brigade’s business plan.
The brigade was represented at the Annual Wajax (rural
fire) competitions at Hawea by an enthusiastic bunch,
but a lack of regular training probably contributed to a
lower field finish. But well done to those who made
the effort as at one stage I didn’t think Middlemarch
would be able to put together a team at all.
Finally thank you for all the complimentary comments
from those who saw the Countrywide article.

Middlemarch Swimming Pool
The pool will close for the season
at the end of the Easter weekend.
A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in
helping with the pool this season.
A hot summer has meant it has been a great season.
Our caretaker John Foote deserves a huge thank you.
A busy season means a lot more work keeping the
water quality right and maintaining the pumps and
John has done this wonderfully.
Without his time and enthusiasm the pool could not
open so thank you very much John.
Thank you to the committee who work behind the
scenes to ensure that there is money to pay the bills
and the volunteers who help with the fundraising
opportunities (sometimes at very short notice).
Thank you to Trudy Lindsay who organised the
cleaning roster this summer and the cleaners,
your work is very much appreciated.
Thank you to Maggies and the Strath Taieri Hotel
for selling keys.
Winter plans
We hope to drain the pool and complete the rest of the
painting to the bottom of the pool.
We are also investigating heating the pool.
This may mean an increase in pool key prices to cover
the increased electricity cost but we will do our best to
ensure if needed this is minimal.
What it also means is a guaranteed season from Labour
weekend to the end of March with consistent
minimum pool temps.
We are also in discussions for lessons in December.
Finally the biggest thank you goes to the key holders.
Without you buying keys and supporting the pool it
could not stay open.
I am aware the end of the year is an expensive time to
buy a key so if you would like to pre pay for a
key during the winter please contact me.
