Anzac Day Commemoration
Thank you to everyone who helped and assisted with
Anzac Day Commemorations this year, the first time it
has been run as a community led event.
Thanks to the Community Board and Strath Taieri
Museum for the funding and support for the flagpoles.
Thanks to James Hall, Gratton O'Connell,
Michael Wilson, Adam Dale and Cameron Macaulay for
raising the flagpoles, to STRFC for the liquid
refreshments, the Community Centre committee for
the use of the Hall, the Taieri RSA Band, Neil Grant for
the CD and organising the singers, Steve Grant for the
sound system, all those that supplied food and a
special mention to Priscilla Porter and
Stephanie Macaulay for the back ground work with the
museum display and to
the school children that assisted.
We are always grateful for the Army and their
attendance and participation. It was great to have
Cr Mike Lord speak so well again, and the Fire Brigade
in uniform. Thank you all for your attendance.
There will be a debriefing meeting of the day later.
If anyone has any comments
please let Kate Wilson or Barry Williams know .

Police News
Fire Brigade News
Lest we forget - April 25 marks the 100 year centenary
of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli. This year
commemorations were bigger than usual everywhere,
even in Middlemarch. I was very proud to be involved
in the awesome turnout of those who marched in
Middlemarch. We must also remember those who
continue to serve overseas today to protect the values
that are important to our country - we wish them a safe
return home one day soon.
While a few newer members maybe needing some more
marching practice (as well as a few older ones!) I was
very pleased to lead the fire brigade in the Anzac Day
parade. Standing at the cenotaph I am reminded that
those who died and others who served were volunteers
and as a leader of a group of volunteers how attitudes
to being a volunteer and what is expected by both the
organisation and the person volunteering have changed.
The leaves are turning & autumn is with us and the
Strath Taieri definitely has the feel of winter some
days. Middlemarch Police has received several reports
of stolen firewood - this is theft - whether you cut &
collect it yourself, or buy your firewood, it is hard
yakka either way & Police will prosecute anyone caught
thieving firewood.
And, Police are getting multiple reports of Trespass.
Southern Police are well aware there has been a
significant increase in poaching, trespass, wilful damage
and theft related activities in the region and
Middlemarch is certainly not immune. 'Armed
trespassers' are even a more serious safety issue for
farmers, legitimate hunters and Police. Late last year,
the Wild Animal Control Act was amended to replace
the $500 Poaching fine with an up to 2 years
imprisonment and/or $10,000 fine.
Police can also
confiscate vehicles, firearms, pig dogs, etc. Police are
hoping the potential for imprisonment will now be a
deterrent for some, or the review & cancellation of
their firearms licences.
The permission of the land
owner is required before hunting or shooting anywhere.
And, a permit is necessary on any land managed by the
Department of Conservation (DOC), forestry companies
or your local body council.
There has been a lot of interest of late in persons
wanting to obtain Firearms Licences - Firearms control
laws address two basic issues - safety & security.
NZ'ers are very outdoor orientated and as a result we do
have a high level of firearm ownership & use. Effective
and active safety instruction is vital for anyone involved
in firearms.
In conjunction with the NZ Mountain
Safety Council, Middlemarch Police is holding an
instruction & testing night,
Tuesday 19 May,
Middlemarch Fire Station, 7pm.
Get a copy of the Arms Code & come along. For more
information, ring Middlemarch Police 021 191 5082.
And, now for the football.
The Fifa Under 20 World
Cup starts next month and this World Cup will see 24
teams play 52 games in 7 different locations including
Dunedin.
For those requiring any statutory declarations to be
signed and notarised - I am able to do this service.
Remember, if you have something to report, notice
anything suspicious or amiss, not happy with some
situation, want a raffle drawn or just to talk, ring the
Police.
Helen

With the cooler weather most homes are now needing
heating. Chimneys and flues should be cleaned and
care needs to be taken with heaters and electric
blankets. Also I hope everyone checked their smoke
alarms when daylight saving changed.

Recently during a camp at Tautuku there was an

Grace ran five kms through the bush for help, and
Shelby comforted the victim and helped carry the

We Remember JOHN KEATING
28 July 1891- 9 May 1915
John Keating was the son of Mr and Mrs John Andrew
Keating and is remembered on the Sutton School’s
brass Honours Board which is held
at the Middlemarch Museum.
John was employed by Cameron Bros as a mechanic
when he enlisted on 15 August 1914. Two months later,
with the Main Body, (8,426 men) he embarked on one
of two troopships either HMNZT 5 or HMNZT 9 at Port
Chalmers. John and his fellow soldiers arrived in Suez
on 3 December 1914. The Commonwealth soldiers
stormed the Dardanelles Peninsula on 25-26 April 1915;
the 29th Division at Cape Helles in the south and the
Australian and New Zealand Corps north of Gaba Tepe ,
the area now known as Anzac.
The Ottoman soldiers held the highest positions and
kept the Allies pinned to the beaches. Mortality on
both sides was high. John Keating was killed in action
during the Battle for Krithia on the 9th of May, 14 days
after the first advance and his name
is engraved on The Lone Pine Memorial.
The LONE PINE MEMORIAL stands on the site of the
fiercest fighting at Lone Pine and overlooks
the whole front line of May 1915.
It commemorates more than 4,934 Australian & New
Zealand servicemen who died in the Anzac area.
Others named on the memorial died at sea and were
buried in Gallipoli waters. [http://www.cwgc.org/
