Coconut – A crop of the future
• Widely acclaimed as Kalpavriksha or Tree of Heaven
• Provides food security and livelihood opportunities to 640 lakh
people around globe and 120 lakh people in India
• World production of Coconut is 71299 million nuts from an area of
12.44 million ha (APCC Statistical year book-2012)
• India, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Papua New Guinea,
Thailand, Mexico and Vietnam are the major coconut growing
countries.
• India leads in productivity with 11419 nuts per ha. and holds first
position in production with 24397.5 million nuts

 Cultivated in 19 states and 3 Union Territories
 Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
contributes 90% of area and 91% of Production
 Largest producer in the world

 98% coconut holdings are owned by small and marginal
farmers in the country (less than 2 ha).
 Annual production is 23351.2 million nuts (2012) and
24397.5 million nuts (2013).
 Contributes more than Rs.10,000 crores annually to GDP

CPF- The concept
Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)
Coconut Producer Society (CPS)

A group of 40-100 coconut farmers in a
contiguous area with a range of 4000-6000
yielding palms.

Minimum of 10 bearing palms per member.

Registered under Charitable Societies Act.

Further Registration with the CDB.

Common byelaw for all the societies.

Federation (CPF) The concept
Second Tier
• Group of 15-25 CPS are federated to CPF covering
80000 to 100000 yielding palms
• Training for palm climbing and ensure their
services to CPSs,
• Organized and planned harvesting,
• Aggregation of produce,
• Obtaining credit facilities, Kissan credit card etc.

Objective
To enhance the production and productivity of
coconut by the total removal of all root(wilt)
disease advanced, unproductive, old and senile
palms and the rejuvenation of the remaining palms
in a Mission mode.

Gardens
Background
The scheme was sanctioned for implementation in Kerala
State in view of the severe infestation of root(wilt) disease
in the State.
The approach recommended by the Research Institutes is
to contain the disease by cutting and removal of disease
advanced palms and improve the productivity of disease
early and middle stage palms by adoption of better
management practices.
