MCC Upcoming Events edition 8 – April 6, 2015 MIDLAND SOCIAL CURLING CLUB Well, the fabulous Friday night crew has done it again! For the second time in less than a month, they hosted a tremendously successful social night, contributing to the coffers of the club as a whole, and bringing in non-members to enjoy some fun, MCC style! Not only did we discover some hidden stars within our ranks (Mike Ladouceur and Chris Kuntz – WOW!), we expanded our reach into the community – AWESOME! Special thanks to Chris Kuntz and Leigh Rawlins for the concept, getting the word out, and making it happen! As we work to promote membership and rentals of our facility, exposure of the facility and great social events at the Midland Curling Club are instrumental in our success. Look for more of this type of event in the coming season …. Euchre Wine & Cheese, Lip Synch, Wings & Strings, Craft Beer night, Haggis in the Hack, Pool & Darts, Bored Board Night, Open Format Bonspiel …the possibilities are endless! Have an idea of your own for a social event? PLEASE – step up and talk to your league rep, a board member, or our house manager. With some suggestions from YOU (what would you and 20 of your closest friends want to do?), and a few volunteers we can make it happen. Let’s create a FULL HOUSE together! THE COOLEST GUY AT THE MCC Perhaps you’ve seen him going into the club when no one else is there – or at a bonspiel - or at the club in the weeks just before the start of the season. Seemingly he’s everywhere, and he’s always there. If you don’t know who we are talking about, look around – pretty sure he’s just around the corner. The COOLEST guy at the Midland Curling Club is of course, BRYAN WILSON, MCC icemaker extraordinaire since 2001 (icemaker in Penetang, Elmvale & Coldwater as well!), member of the OCA provincial ice team, Head Ice Technician for the 2015 Provincial Scotties, Level 3 Coach, equipment purveyor, club member since 1984, and member of the last (1999) Midland Men’s to competed in a Provincial Championship (the last time Midland had a team at this level!). WOW! Bryan and his team of Kristeen & Jennifer Wilson, and Garry Butineau are approaching the end of another season of exceptional ice making. In Bryan’s words “The addition of new equipment, dehumidifier, heaters and compressor, were crucial to improving conditions this season.” Take a minute to thank Bryan for all of his efforts, expertise, and dedication to our club and the sport! Be sure to thank the team at Fred Hook Ltd. for their support of the MCC! Serving the greater Midland area since 1956, the team at Fred Hook Ltd. are pros when it comes to Heating & Air Conditioning for home and commercial applications, and if you need custom metal fabrication, or refrigeration, they can do that as well. Their squad of licensed HVAC mechanics & gas fitters, welders & sheet metal workers, are located at 905 King St. in Midland, and offer a 24 hour emergency service. AWAY FUN OH OH. It would appear that the fun factor with some of our league curlers is sweeping (no pun intended, really!) communities to the North of us. Do you recognize any of these folks – apparently they hail from Midland, and were in attendance at a recent Gravenhurst spiel. With MCC hosting the Tim Horton’s Masters Provincial Championship next season Bryan is looking for help with ice maintenance during the event – please speak with him directly if you are interested in helping out. SUPER SPONSORS Thinking of adding central air to your home this year? Shopping for a furnace, or considering adding in-floor heating to your ensuite? Need something in metal you just can’t find anywhere? Fred Hook Ltd. is the place to call (705-526-0176). Curling is such a social activity – catch the fever, and share some of your away stories and photos with us, and encourage the fun factor at events in our own club. The more, the merrier as they say – after all, how can you look at this photo and NOT smile?! Charlotte Sprague MCC Upcoming Events edition 8 – April 6, 2015 COMING SOON ….… JANUARY 6-10, 2016 PROVINCIAL MASTERS The Dream Team of Carroll Wilson, Lynn Morton, and Karen Mallany are busy planning for the MCC’s hosting of the January 6-10, 2016 Provincial Masters. This event is important to our club on several fronts … We are host to curlers and curling enthusiasts from around the province, and visible to thousands more through television and media coverage. What an opportunity to show some great MCC hospitality! As a provincial event, we will have the opportunity to make the acquaintance with a number of OCA (Ontario Curling Association) representatives. These relationships are both educational and invaluable as we promote the sport of curling, and look for ways to improve and grow our club. Hosting an OCA event holds some cache, but it is also an important revenue source – plain and simple. While supporting our club is important, in the bigger picture we play a role in promoting our amazing Georgian Bay community and the generosity of our sponsors. So PLEASE, jump on board to help out with the event – we’ll need people to work with sponsors, food services help, entertainment & welcoming committees, timers … the list goes on! Speak to one of the Dream Team and watch for volunteer signup sheets. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) Our annual general meeting will be held on the first night of registration for the 2015/2016 season. The board will announce the date to all members via email in May. As someone with a vested interest in club activities and future, please mark the date on your calendar and ensure that you attend the AGM. This is your opportunity to hear firsthand how your board is managing the club – successes, challenges and new opportunities. DON’T BE AN OSTRICH – SHOW UP and PARTICIPATE! CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE UPDATE Have you bought your “tickets” for our annual membership draw yet? The Centennial committee (who helps fund capital projects) is running the contest again this year with the winner being announced on the last night of the Right to Brag competition April 9. Tickets take the form of a square on the board, and are $5.00 each. The owner of the winning square will be awarded a single league membership for the 2015/2016 season. We are in need of a Treasurer for the Board. If you have a few hours a month to spare, and are willing to take on this volunteer position, please speak to Steve Sprague. Election of the position will take place at the AGM. CLINIC & EDUCATION notes (as provided by Dermot Quinn – thank you!) As we wrap up the 2014/2015 curling season, special attention and thanks go out to the Clinic & Education team, led by Dermot Quinn. The contributions of this team to the club is huge. Did you know that “Since the initial offering of Learn to Curl (LTC) in 2012, the volunteers have logged some 450 house of coaching time. This is exclusive of the time required for training, certification, continuing education and lesson planning.”? For their time, energy, and commitment, a big Midland Curling Club THANK YOU to: COACHES: David Drummond, Brent Gordon, Bill Hunter, Dermot Quinn. INSTRUCTORS: Geoff Barley, Nancy Hunter, Ian Jones, Mike Moreau. ALUMNI: Ed Banks, Ian John, Brian Loney Please speak to Jennifer Hurdle or Karen Mallany about buying a square or two on the draw board. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that your membership fees for next season are already paid?! Our 3rd Annual Garage & Bake Sale fundraiser is less than two months away - May 30th will be here before we know it! Be sure to gather up any gently used items and drop them off at the club – a list of “hot sellers” is posted near the office in the club lounge. And, if you have a few hours to spare to help prepare for the sale, or to work the sale, or bake some yummy treats, a volunteer signup sheet is posted by the office as well. Please fill in your name for a few shifts to help out where needed. Thanks for reading folks … until next season! Charlotte Sprague
