off to the AGM at Wodonga our Mildura Branch Ulysses members are preparing their bikes
and gear and deciding which route to
take. At this stage I think twelve to
fifteen members are preparing to undertake the trek using all modes of

friends while we are there. It was at

Minutes of the General Meeting held on Thursday the 19th. February 2015,
at the Mildura Motor Cycle Club’s clubrooms.

The President, Warren Ward, opened the meeting at 7.39pm, and welcomed all those present, and then asked
if there were any Visitors or Guests present?
Visitors / Guests:- Ulysses Club members Paul and Mandy Ferguson were attending their first Mildura
Branch meeting, having been members in Broken Hill for about 13 years, now living in Buronga, NSW.
Mandy and Paul gave a brief and lighthearted resumé of their Ulysses involvement.

Treasurer’s Report:The Treasurer advised that nothing has changed since the last report. All is in good shape.
Passed by Consensus that all Executive Reports be accepted.
BRANCH REPORTS.
Events:- Bonny Ward outlined the upcoming events for February through to April, and also updated the
members on the WROC meeting held a couple of days earlier.
Royce Connell who is to lead the Werrimull ride on Feb. 21/22 advised that he would be leaving the Paris
-Nice Café by 1.00pm, and stopping at the Jacaranda Village Red Cliffs for light refreshment and
‘showing off’ the ‘bikes.
Media / Publicity:- Stephen advised that the publicity flyers for the Wintersun Run and the Black Dog 1
Dayer are well under way.
Stephen is still imploring members for contributions to the ‘Runner’ newsletter.
Quartermistress:- Some new items to be officially released at the 2015 AGM in Wodonga have actually
become available.
Gayle noted that there is now only 1 left of the Wintersun Run windcheaters at $20.00.
Welfare Officer:- Bonny Ward advised that that there had been some very sad news for one of our
members, Shane Downes and family.
Ken Chapple had been in hospital for a few days, after having had some blood tests. Apparently he had
‘dodged the bullet’ by a very small margin, thanks to a very alert and conscientious pathologist.
Merv. Jones has thankfully been cleared of his prostate concerns.
Birthdays for February; Marlene Perry and Jon Whitchurch.
Wintersun Run Organising Committee (WROC):- Sy Nunan advised that planning was well on track
and that there are several entertainments being planned for the event.
Merv. Jones took about 50 Wintersun Run Flyers to the Red Back Rally in Charlton.
Passed by Consensus that all branch reports be accepted.
Ride Reports:- Alan (Frederick) Singlehurst told the amusing story of his ride with a lady in his sidecar
unit who had returned to Mildura after many years away.
Royce Connell spoke about the Red Back Rally – approx. 450 attendees, good fun, plenty of music, a wet
‘T’ Shirt competition, and a wet ‘jocks’ competition!!
Mandy Ferguson spoke about getting back on the ‘bike after a long time off, partly due to health issues,
and noted how good it felt to be back on the ‘bike, even for a short ride!
Sy Nunan went to Burra SA in the company of a friend from WA, and after parting he rode south to the
Adelaide hills for a couple of days riding. It was interesting to ride through the areas recently inundated
with bush fires.
Jon Whitchurch spoke of the disaster that had happened to him with his recently restored sidecar where

someone backed into him and caused some damage.
Merv. Jones mentioned an attendee at the Red Back Rally who had a sidecar built like a coffin, but with
clever design it could be used as a regular sidecar, a receptacle for camping and touring gear etc.
General Business:- Peter Ellis advised that an RSA (Responsible Serving of Alcohol) certificate needs to
be renewed after 3 years. It can be done on-line and takes only a few minutes, and there is no cost involved.
Gayle Ellis is looking to pass on the Quarter Mistress Portfolio to someone else as she will be away in July
– September. Maria Page has volunteered to take over the role.
Sy Nunan asked the members if they would be interested in a RoadSafe presentation. This was confirmed
in the affirmative. Sy to organise.
Warren Ward sought interest in a talk by guest speakers about Alzheimers Disease, and also from Sunraysia
Hearing about hearing and hearing loss. There was general consensus that these matters were worth pursuing.
Supper: - there will be a Branch BBQ at the March meeting.

matter of interest. We have had medical and legal issues discussed to date. Our guest speaker for the March
meeting, which is also a BBQ meeting, will be talking about alcohol issues. If you have someone or something in mind that is of interest to you and possibly could be of interest to others, please let me know and we
will investigate the possibility of getting someone in to speak to the group.
Our BBQ dinner will commence at 6:30 followed by our guest speaker at 7:30 before we start our monthly
meeting. I hope you will make every effort to come along. It would be nice to see some more of our registered members come along who we haven’t seen for quite some time. Remember you are always welcome!!

Tyres could charge electric motorcycles

Electric motorcycles and other vehicles may soon be
charged by the heat built up in the tyres.
Goodyear has developed a concept tyre for cars which
transfers the heat into electricity to store in the battery
of an electric vehicle.
There is nothing stopping them from doing the same
with motorcycle tyres.
It’s called kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and
it’s not really a new concept. Anyone who has been
following Formula One racing will know they use it.
However, Goodyear’s BH-03 concept tyres are a
unique way of capturing the kinetic energy of heat.
When you drive or ride, your tyres heat up from friction with the road surface. Put your hand on your
tyres after a good strop through the hills and you will
notice how hot they are.
That kinetic energy is lost when the tyre cools down.
However, Goodyear uses thermo piezoelectric material in
the tyre to store the energy and transform it into electricity.
It also harnesses the energy forces that deform the tyre.
For maximum effect Goodyear uses “ultra black” tyre
compound to attract sunlight and heat, and a heatabsorbing tread pattern. To avoid overheating, there is also
a vent cooling system.
The stored electricity can be used to recharge the vehicle’s
battery.
It certainly wouldn’t be enough to power the whole car, but
it should be able to help top up the battery and perhaps

lengthen the vehicle’s range.
Electric vehicles are well and truly set to enter the
mainstream market in the next few years with motorcycle companies such as BMW, Yamaha, Harley-Davidson and Victory showing keen interest.
The biggest hurdle is what they call “range anxiety”, but with inventions such as these tyres, anxiety could be diminished.

The railway line from Red Cliffs reached Werrimull in 1923.The township has always been the centre of the
Millewa, and in the early years had all the facilities. Bush Nursing Hospital, resident Doctor, Government Office's, S.R & W.S.C. and Lands Department Offices, Police Station, Public Hall, Baby Health Centre, Catholic, Methodist and Anglican churches, C.B.A. Bank and by the late 1930s a Hotel. Off all these facilities only
few remain today. The Public Hall, the Hotel, two Churches and the School, which is now a P12 School, with
many new buildings and a swimming pool.

The Harley Davidson LAMs approved Street 500 was revealed to
Australia on the 21st February we are lucky enough to have two demos in store.
One has had an exhaust, breather kit and tune done to it and the other is stock
standard. Thanks to everyone who braved the heat on the Saturday to be here and

Thu. 19th Ulysses Club, Mildura Branch Monthly Meeng @ 6.30pm, at the Mildura Motorcycle Club’s
rooms, Olympic Park (Western end of Eleventh Street).
Prior to the Branch General Mee=ng there will be a presenta=on by the Mildura Community Road Safety
Council (actually trading as ‘RoadSafe’). The presenta=on is =tled “Looking aAer our mates” and is focused on the social use of alcohol and driving or riding. It promises to be a most interes=ng presenta=on.
This is to be a club BBQ evening.
Sat. / Sun. 21st - 22nd Overnighter for members not aCending the AGM. Leaving the Paris-Nice Café at
11.00am on Saturday, and heading via Yamba, to Loxton for lunch. Thence to Pinnaroo and overnight at
the Murrayville Hotel / Motel. A good deal for accommoda=on has been worked out for Ulysses members, ‘phone (03) 5095 2120. Tony Parry will be leading the ride, Sy Nunan will be the tail man. The return to Mildura on Sunday will be via Ouyen, where the group will be contac=ng the Black Dog Riders
(see entry below) .
Sun. 22nd Black Dog 1 Dayer Ride. Refer Flyer in the ‘Runner’ for details. Signing in for those who have
not already done so will be at the Eighth Street end of Langtree Mall from 9.00am. The ride will depart
from there at 10.00am, arriving at HaCah at about 10.45am, and ﬁnishing at Ouyen for lunch, around
12.00pm.

Mon. 23rd – Sun. 29th The Ulysses AGM to be held in Wodonga Vic. We are hoping for a good turn-out
of members from Mildura. Some members have already booked a tent in Tent City, and others have
booked a spot in the event camp-site. If you haven’t already been to an AGM (apart from our own here
in Mildura in 2012), do try and get along to Wodonga. AGM’s are a lot of fun, and Wodonga is only
about 635 klms from Mildura, an easy two day ride at most.
APRIL 2015
Thu. 2nd Events Group meeng, at the Mildura Working Man’s Club (The Workers) 7.30pm, (or
6.30pm for a meal before the meeting). Any member is most welcome to come along and have their say. We
value all your input and suggestions.
Thu. 16th Ulysses Club, Mildura Branch Monthly Meeng @ 7.30pm, at the Mildura Motorcycle Club’s
rooms, Olympic Park (Western end of Eleventh Street).
Sun. 19th Lunch Ride. This will be another ‘Sanger’ Run, which proved to be very popular last year. Tony
Parry is organising, aided by Bonny Ward. Departure point will be the APCO Service Sta=on on Deakin
Avenue at 11.00am. Final des=na=on will be decided closer to the date – probably to Anabranch (via
Wentworth) if the weather is good, or to the Mallee Fowl Rest Area (towards Euston) if there is a possibility of inclement weather.

Branch AGM. So we are looking for someone else to take over. It is not a parcularly onerous job, but
would suit someone with some basic computer skills (with Microso Word or Excel programmes). If you

You Never Know: A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well. However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest. Worried that it might be a second surgery the
doctors hadn't told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown down
enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable. Taped firmly across his
hairy chest were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off. Written in
large black letters was the sentence: "Get well soon....... from the nurse you gave a ticket to last
week."

I can’t see any point in hanging onto the bike and I’ll sell it at any price – even if just to cover the cost of the
full tank of petrol. The bike (a Kawasaki GPZ900R, 1986 model) usually starts first go and it goes bloody
well. The tyres are good, as is the chain. It also has stainless steel exhaust pipes. It’s regularly serviced and
there’s not much needing doing – except the
acquirer being the one to get the roadworthy
and organising the rego transfer, not me. The
bike is currently registered in my wife’s name
(for several reasons) and is current until
5/12/2015.
I’d be interested in someone taking the bike off
my hands for even far less than a reasonable
sum; but I’ll reserve the right as to whether I’ll
accept the offer or not. I’ll be interested to see
if I get any offers at all.

Tour with Yamaha MT-09 Tracer

The Yamaha MT-09 Tracer is basically an MT-09 naked bike with a swag of accessories that turn it into a tourer worthy of our wide, brown land.
It comes standard with hard panniers, adjustable seat, three-position windscreen, centre stand, hand guards,
three engine modes, traction control, ABS, sporty fairing and larger fuel tank .
When it was unveiled at the EICMA show in Milan late last year, it was announced as a touring model for Europe only. However, it will make a great addition to the touring line-up in Australia.
There is no arrival date or price yet for yet another MT-09 variant, the matte-finish Sport Tracker. It comes
with black frame and engine,
Akrapovic exhaust, wider footrests,
knee grips on the tank, gold upsidedown forks and aluminium front
and side number plates has not yet
been .
Meanwhile, the Tracer is described
as “the ultimate weekender” with its
light weight of 190kg, weather protection from the fairing and screen,
and its large carrying capacity with a
top box available as an option.
It is still powered by the “Masters of
Torque” 847cc triple engine, but
now comes with three engine maps
and sully switchable three-position
traction control.
Yamaha claims the traction control
will even help riders negotiate the
occasional gravel road with ease.
While it has the same narrow and lightweight frame as the MT-09, the Tracer has a slightly more upright riding
position with more space for the pillion.
The seat is also adjustable in two positions and the handlebars can be moved 1cm forward or backwards and
rotated for best fit.
It also has four more litres than the MT-09, giving the 18-litre tank up to 300km range.
The dashboard is from the Super Ténéré and features the same useful functions including gear indicator, outside temperature, fuel level, drive mode settings, traction control settings, accessory grip heater settings, and
more.
The handle holder has an empty M6 bolt thread, for an easy mount of accessories such as a GPS. It comes
with a 12V outlet as standard, and a second one is available as an accessory.
The MT-09 Tracer is equipped with new twin LED headlights that feature LEDs built into the reflector lenses.
The headlights can be adjusted without tools to accommodate varying angles for different load weights.
Despite all the extra gear, including panniers, windscreen, fairings and electronics, it only weighs 19kg more
than the naked MT-09.

By combining a dry weight of just 190kg with the popular high torque 847cc triple engine of MT-09, Tracer
carves its own niche as a practical yet sporty motorcycle equally comfortable two-up touring or solo scratching. The low weight, combined with the powerful, explosive engine and the practicality of the bike gives Tracer
a unique place in the market.
The eager 3-cylinder engine character combines low-rpm torque with high-revving horsepower. It is smoother
than a twin, while the engine is narrow for a comfortable knee grip. To give the MT-09 Tracer rider the bike and the excitement - he or she needs in different riding situations, this motorcycle is equipped with the Yamaha
D-MODE system.
The rider has a choice of three different throttle valve control mapping settings, STD Mode, A Mode and B
Mode. The dashboard comes from the latest Super Ténéré and includes indications for gear position, outside
temperature, fuel level, drive mode settings, traction control settings, accessory grip heater settings, and more.
The MT-09 Tracer is equipped with ABS as standard, and to underline its genuine touring, commuting and
long distance potential, this new multi-role triple benefits from a range of exclusive new features, including the
use of touring tyres (front: 120/70ZR17; rear: 180/55ZR17), as well as the fitment of a standard main stand.
The fuel tank has a generous 18 litres capacity, the modern engine has a low fuel consumption good for
300kms between refills. The fitted hard panniers come standard and are easily removed for commuting or
short trips.

Editors report
While the 2015 AGM Event at Wodonga has not started yet there is much talk
about the 2016 Event in Launceston
like booking the boat, accommodation
and places to visit.
We cant wait for the Tassie Event, but
our focus is on the Wodonga AGM
next week.
A torn MM, crutches and BMW don’t
compliment each other.
So we have to go over to Wodonga in
the car, much to Stephens disgust.
So we will have some room if anyone
needs gear brought home
Time is an issue for us and we wont be
leaving until Wednesday night to go
part of the way then arrive on Thursday and catch up with friends from
around Australia.
Looks like time is not the only snag in
the plans, in pain and hopping around,
a visit to the doctor has resulted in the
diagnosis that it looks like Stephen has
torn his medial meniscus.
