LSC ENGLISH TEACHER – TO GCSE
FULL TIME, FROM SEPTEMBER 2015
THE DEPARTMENT
The Learning Support Centre (LSC) is currently staffed by 8 full-time and 2 part-time tutors, including
the Head of Department. The work of the LSC is further supported by a number of peripatetic tutors,
2 part-time administrative assistants and a part-time speech and language therapist. The
department provides SpLD students with study support and teaches English Language and English
Literature up to GCSE level. The LSC benefits from a strong sense of teamwork which makes it a very
vibrant and rewarding environment in which to work.
Millfield works within the framework of the SEN Code of Practice and The Equality Act. We are
constantly reviewing and updating the school’s AEN Policy in line with current developments,
amendments and initiatives.
The LSC’s primary purpose is to assist and support pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties, mainly
Dyslexia. Pupils are taught research and studies skills as well as following individualised programmes
to further develop literacy skills. We offer study support lessons for students from Year 9 to Upper
Sixth. We also teach English Language and English Literature up to GCSE level. In addition lunchtime
workshops take place daily, which pupils can attend in order to receive help with their studies or to
work through individual programmes.
The LSC is located at the heart of the school within the same building as the English, Religious
Studies and History Departments. The department is well resourced with both IT and a wide range of
revision and reference materials. Pupils’ progress is closely monitored within the department and a
range of different assessment materials are used to this effect.
LSC English tutors teach the EDEXCEL GCSE and IGCSE English Language and Literature courses to
small groups; usually 7 – 9 pupils. The LSC English Tutors typically have additional qualifications
and/or experience in teaching predominately dyslexic pupils using multi-sensory teaching methods.
Millfield has committed itself to working with reference to the SEND Code of Practice (2014) and in
accordance with The Equality Act (2010).
THE POSITION





A suitably qualified English Tutor to GCSE;
An interest in teaching SpLD pupils, predominately dyslexic;
A recognised professional SpLD qualification (would be an advantage but not essential);
Experience of teaching small groups of SpLD pupils;
The ability to engage and motivate pupils;

Each member of the teaching staff has a voice on professional matters via the Common Room
Chair. The ability to join a strong community through a number of social events (Staff Bar, Staff
sports leagues etc.) is encouraged.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Full-time teachers at Millfield are expected to:



Play a full part in the extensive games and activities programme;
Be a group tutor attached to a boarding or day house;
Be attached to a boarding house as a liaison tutor, doing a weekly evening duty, for which an
additional allowance is paid.

Millfield School has adopted the school-wide use of mobile technologies in teaching and learning,
and applicants are expected to develop their own skills and teaching to make appropriate use of
such opportunities.
Statutory induction is provided for NQTs. Staff are normally expected to find their own
accommodation. A reduction of 65% of day fees is available to all full-time teachers for any
son/daughter attending Millfield Schools from Reception to Year 13.
