David Faulkner Millfield Director of Sport Sport Successes from the Spring Term Badminton The U18 girls badminton team won the Somerset Schools League, beating some county players in the process. Dance Over 80 pupils performed in the annual Dance Show. The theme was Millfield’s 80th Anniversary, showcasing dance genres and news events through the decades. Fencing Millfield fencers secured an impressive 13 team medals at the recent British School Team Championships. Roo Whelan became GB Champion and was selected for GB at the European and World Championships, where he is joined by Imran Mohd Seth (Malaysia U17 and U20) and Yasmine Fosu (Ghana U17 and U20). Football Millfield’s U18 2nd XI were winners of the ESFA South West League and the U14A team have made the final of the County Cup, to be played at the end of April. Golf Sixteen Millfield golfers attended the Desert Springs and Millfield Schools Team Championships in February. The team of Beth Scott, Harry Butler, Aleix Marin and Tom Barker finished 4th overall and Sophie Caldon won the Girls Individual. Hockey The U18 boys made the final sixteen of the National Cup and the U16 boys were semi-finalists in the regional competition in the nationals. The U14 boys were runners-up of the regional competition. Toby Reynolds-Cotterill has been selected to represent England in the U18 team to play Holland in a three match series over Easter. The 1st XI Hockey girls have qualified for the Nationals for the sixth consecutive year and Upper Sixth pupil, Olivia Allin, has been selected for the England U18 squad. Netball The U14, U16 and U19 teams qualified for the National Schools Netball finals. In addition, the 1st VII took the title of ISN Cup Champions and Anna Timperley was awarded player of the (final) match. Riding A team of Ella Hoskings, Nina Rapp, Talullah Bartlett and Phoebe Locke qualified for the NSEA Championships for dressage. Phoebe and Talullah also qualified as individuals in the novice and Talullah in the elementary dressage. Rugby The rugby 7s season got off to a flying start with wins for the U14, U15 and U16 teams winning the Warwick 7s; the U16s winning the Stowe 7s; the U15s winning the Hampshire 7s; the 1st VII winning the Marches 7s and the 2nd VII winning the Colstons 7s. Darren Atkins has played for U18 England and Adam Hastings has become a member of the U20 Scotland team this spring. Skiing At the Inter Schools Ski Challenge in Les Houches, Millfield Ski Team placed 2nd in the British Schools Cup. James Whitley competed for the GB Senior Paralympic team in the World Championships in Canada and placed 9th in Slalom. Squash Daniel Poleshchuk was named PSA player of the month and Colette Sultana and Adi Jagtap were both named as part of the All American College team. At the National Schools Squash Finals in Manchester, the 1st team boys were runners up, the 1st team girls came 7th and the U15 girls were runners-up in the trophy. Tennis Luke Hammond won the U16 Winter National Tour Masters, beating the GB ranked number 5 player. Trampolining At the National Schools Competition, Ellie Lloyd, Lily Woodbridge and Celeste Sifontes Pico competed in the Intermediate U19 girls’ event and secured the bronze medal. 9 May 2015 21 May 2015 Super Saturday of Sport Tea and Dance All welcome 4.30pm, Dance Studio / All welcome A competitive mix of teams and sports playing against high quality schools and clubs. ‘Tea and Dance’ performances allow pupils, parents and staff an opportunity to step inside the dance studios and watch the girls perform work they have prepared in class. Dancers showcase a wide range of genres they have learnt across the year including ballet, modern, tap, contemporary and jazz. On this occasion, the performance will consist of solo work choreographed and performed by the girls in Bazique who are leaving us this year. The junior dancers showing the dance pieces they are preparing for the end of year Summer Show. There are 11 award categories to cover junior/senior performers and individual/team sports from across Millfield’s 28 sports. The school is proud to include the ‘Spirit of Millfield Award’, awarded to a pupil and coach who most embody the essence of sport within the Millfield Community. Our special guest for the event is OM James Guy, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in the 400m freestyle, who will hand out the awards and share his sporting experiences. The second part of the event consists of the Sports’ Colours Dinner, recognising those talented individuals who have represented Millfield at the highest level. This is an exceptional achievement within a school that sets high sporting standards. 23-24 May 2015 British Eventing Millfield Millfield Prep School / All welcome A brand new sports event is being held in May, as introduced by Danny Anholt, Director of Equestrian Sports. A BE event comprises dressage, show jumping and cross country, making it an exhilarating spectator event. Millfield is proud to be hosting our inaugural British Eventing competition running from 9.00am-6.00pm on 23-24 May 2015. The event promises to be a wonderful spectacle, set in the shadow of Glastonbury Tor at Millfield Prep. It will cover almost the entire campus, including our brand new cross country course, designed and built by Adrian Ditchum, London 2012 course builder. The event will comprise two days of BE 80, 90 and 100, including open sections, involving 300-400 competitors; top national riders, Millfield pupils and Old Millfieldians. Eventing is the ultimate test of equestrian training; the precision and harmony of dressage, the athleticism and control of show jumping and the speed and courage of cross country - all in one day’s competition. 13 June 2015 19 June 2015 Super Saturday and Festival of Tennis Sports Captains’ Table All welcome A competitive mix of teams and sports playing against high quality schools and clubs who are regular Millfield opponents; combined with Millfield’s second Festival of Tennis to include a mix of competitive and entertainment events. Following the National Schools competition on Saturday 23 May in Nottingham, the rowers prepare themselves for a variety of regattas to be held on the River Thames.
