Audience is essential to the form and purpose choice as it determines who would read this piece.
The audience may be real or imagined.

Who is your audience?
What age range is your audience?
What educational levels do your audience have?
What interests do your audience have?
What nationality/ethnicity is your audience?
What values might your audience have? (e.g. a gay community, an ethnic community, a
environmentalists, etc.)
• What socioeconomic status do they have (rich, middle class, poor, etc.)
• Who is excluded from your audience? Why?
E.g. you may write a letter to your school council about the issues of uniform or you may choose to
write for an imagined future generation about a time when there was no such thing as a ‘uniform’.
The important thing is to make your language choices appropriate for your intended audience.
