PRE-LAUNCH ACTIVITIES (For Early Arrivals)
If you arrive early for the Local Foods, Local Places event, you are invited to enjoy lunch on
your own and to a tour of Sustainable Williamson projects.
Enjoy Lunch in Williamson!
Several Williamson restaurants offer healthy and delicious menu selections. Post a lunch photo to
Instagram or Facebook #weallgottaeat and help a local restaurant win a prize. Featured restaurants
include: 34: Ate, Righteous Brew, Hurley’s Drug Store, Sazon and Starters Sport’s Bar.
Culture of Health Tour from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Meet at Williamson Farmers Market and My Mobile Market located on the corner of 2nd Avenue
and Vinson Street in the parking lot across from BB&T. The first stop on the walking tour is
Williamson Health and Wellness Center and the Mingo County Diabetes Coalition followed
by The Coal House for a dose of Hatfield McCoy history. Next, the group will proceed to City Gym
and the Health Innovation HUB before returning back to the farmers market. Guests will then
travel by caravan to the final stop on the tour, Ramella Park Community Gardens.

Local Food’s Role in Building a Culture of Health
BBQ Dinner catered by Wingo’s Grill, a local restaurant in Matewan, WV.
Purpose: “Where are we now, where do we want to be”
Renaissance Planning will lead off this session by providing an overview of the
Local Foods, Local Places program and facilitate discussions that reveal
community values and vision. This hour-long presentation and discussion will
make the connections between local food systems, place-based
considerations, and community health and economic development goals.
The second part of this session features snapshots from Sustainable
Williamson (WV) and a network of communities including speakers from
Growing Warriors (WV, KY), Greenbrier Health Alliance (WV), McDowell
County Farmers (WV), Community Oriented Health Logistics (VA), Scioto
Health Department (OH), Sustainable Pike County (KY), Rebuilding West
Liberty (KY) Amizade, Policy Consensus Initiative, Allto University and including
two short Health Innovation HUB films by students.

Strengthen the Local Food System and Place-based Considerations
Renaissance Planning Group will facilitate an exercise to identify strategies
followed by a discussion of specific ongoing/planned initiatives, an exercise to
help the community identify challenges and opportunities, and an exercise that
will allow the community to identify where it would like to apply specific
strategies. The last exercise will include putting on the table specific
ongoing/planned initiatives that relate to the goal areas for the workshop. This
hour session will result in the start of a localized plan (which may vary for other
communities) with regional components.

featuring #weallgottaeat photos of the Tug Valley High School greenhouse and
Starr Honey Farm. Nutrition spotlight with Dana Wright, WVU Extension Service
and Kay Mayard, Mingo County Schools.
