MN Music Summit April 9–11,
free events and workshops
The Minnesota Music Coalition (MMC) will hold its fourth annual MN Music
Summit, April 9–11 in downtown St. Paul. This three-day festival will feature industry
workshops, concerts and social networking opportunities for artists, fans, and local
industry movers and shakers.
This year’s Summit will include Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival’s
exclusive screening of “MN Made Music Videos.” There will also be a panel about
how to make compelling music videos and an opportunity to meet local videographers and filmmakers. Thanks to the support of the Metropolitan Regional Arts
Council, St. Paul Cultural STAR, Summit Brewery, McNally Smith College of Music,
the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, Minnesota Public Radio and the ongoing support of the
McKnight Foundation, daytime events are free and all events are all ages.
The MN Music Summit kicks off with a social hour at Summit Brewery on
Thursday, April 9 from 6-8 p.m. Musicians and fans will have the opportunity to
mingle with the region’s most important industry VIP’s over free food and beer, tapping into the MMC’s vast network of music supporters.
On Friday, April 10, the Summit continues with a national keynote address at the
Minnesota Public Radio Forum and afternoon workshops and mentoring sessions
at McNally Smith College of Music. The day is capped off with an all ages concert at
Amsterdam Hall, headlined by folk/Americana songwriter Chastity Brown.
The Summit winds up Saturday, April 11, with another afternoon of workshops,
industry panels, and mentoring sessions at McNally Smith. Following that, there will
be a 6-7 p.m. happy hour at Amsterdam, before the grand finale concert, which will
include a special presentation of the inaugural ”MN Music Champion Award.”

music and having fun—it is part of who
we are as a region.”
When Bakken heard about the
Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music
Festival, he thought that it might offer
some of the same real people/music/fun
characteristics. So Bakken, Ben Dempcy,
and a few others came to the 2013 festival with two cameras and a microphone
to record some footage for their show
Postcards, a 30-minute “locally-produced program featuring the art, history and cultural heritage of western
Minnesota and beyond.”
On April 13, 2014, Pioneer aired an
eight-minute snapshot of the festival,
including interviews with MBOTMA
luminaries Brett Day, Earl Jarosh, Craig
Evans, and Dick Hopperstad (and a
beautiful MBOTMA quilt created by
Sue Hopperstad), main stage performances, including the Nordic Bees,
and campground jams, even making it
all the way out to Old Washmachine.
The crew members were particularly
impressed (and are still talking about)
meeting members of the Bluegrass
Firelight band from ETSU, including
MBOTMA’s Gary Hultman and Kiley
Ellingson. As the cameras rolled at the
Sloughgrass campsite, more and more
talented young musicians “came out of
the woods,” one carrying an upright
bass, and joined in on “Goldrush.” (View

The possibilities for further collaborations expanded exponentially
last spring, when Station Manager Jon
Panzer received a grant to help Pioneer
acquire its mobile studio, a 30-foot
production trailer, complete with a
master control suite, audio booth,
computers, and mixing and editing
equipment. Hardware in hand, Bakken
and Panzer asked whether MBOTMA
would be interested in having Pioneer
return to the 2014 festival. Boy, howdy
yeah! Bakken and Panzer spent a day
at El Rancho Mañana during the 2014
Homegrown Kickoff to look for possible sites for the mobile studio and to
meet with Doug (“great to work with!”)

whether they could, once again, pull
their audio feed from his system. They
also had a tour of the campgrounds,
including a brief stop by Alabaster Falls’

If you made it to the main stage at the
2014 Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time
Music Festival, you couldn’t miss seeing
Pioneer Public Television’s new mobile
studio and the six television cameras
dispersed around the area. All that
excitement came to fruition at 9:30 p.m.
on Saturday, January 24, with the airing
of the inaugural episode of Grassland
Jam, Pioneer’s weekly 30-minute
Americana music program.
This premiere episode, as well as
the 12 subsequent programs, feature
performances from the MBOTMA
August Festival. The first episode featured The Roys and Russell Moore &
IIIrd Tyme Out. To date, other featured
bands have included Joe Mullins and the
Radio Ramblers, Jack Klatt and the Cat
Swingers, Monroe Crossing, the Boxcars,
the Drunken Catfish Ramblers, the Volo
Bogtrotters, Long Road Home, and the
Platte Valley Boys. If you’ve missed any
of these programs, never fear, you can
watch them on-line at www.pioneer.org/
grassland-jam. Additionally, all 13 programs will be repeated starting April 18.
MBOTMA is the sponsor of Grassland
Jam, which also will include other live
concerts and festivals.
This collaboration was a natural fit
for these two non-profit organizations.
MBOTMA’s mission—“to preserve and
promote bluegrass and old-time string
band music in Minnesota”—has the
potential for substantial overlap with
Pioneer Public Television’s mission to
“broaden, educate and sustain our rural
communities through services that
reflect our local values.” And that potential is particularly likely to be achieved
because many of Pioneer’s employees,
like Grassland Jam’s producer, Tim
Bakken, are music fans and musicians.
Bakken also produces Funtime Polka,
one of Pioneer’s 10 most popular shows,
which Pioneer has carried for 17 years.
“There’s nothing else like it on TV,” said
Bakken. “These are real people, making

campsite, where Julie and Bill Kaiser
were jamming with Jon Garon (and
where Bakken joined in with some nice
background harmony.)
By the time the 2014 festival had
rolled around, MBOTMA Executive
Director Jed Malischke and El Rancho
owner Kevin Ward had cleared a new
road up to the main stage, providing
access and electrical connections for the
mobile studio. Pioneer set up a wide-angle center camera next to Armadillo
Sound’s control booth, two cameras on
either side of the center camera, another
at stage left, one way back in the crowd,
and a “pole cam” on a 30-foot arm. The
production crew included Bakken as
the production director, who called the
shots from inside the mobile studio, and
seven others shifting among four tasks:
four working the cameras (two of the six
cameras had to be “locked down” most
of the time), one audio technician, one
“shading” technician, adjusting the iris
controls of the cameras, and one crew
member “running free.”
Pioneer taped all three days of the
main stage performances. As each band
came off stage, it received the raw footage of its performance, along with usage
rights. (All bands had previously signed
release forms to allow the recordings.)
The Pioneer/MBOTMA relationship
is likely to further the missions of both
organizations. MBOTMA will introduce
a new viewing audience to Pioneer’s
excellent national (PBS) and local programing. Their locally produced program My Way Back Home is a series of
music documentaries produced by Dana
Johnson, one of which featured the life
and music of Caroline Smith and won
an Upper Midwest Emmy Award for best
Arts/Entertainment program. Pioneer
programs have received several other
nominations, as well.
Grassland Jam should have a similar
laudatory impact for MBOTMA, introducing its music, musicians, and the
festival experience to viewers throughout
the region. Pioneer, one of Minnesota’s
six public television stations, which
already covered most of the western half
of the state, recently became viewable
on Dish Network (Channel 10) and soon
will be on DirecTV. “With a satellite
signal extending all the way to western Wisconsin on the east and to the
Missouri River on the west, Pioneer will
have one of the largest geographic viewing areas of any PBS station in the nation
emanating from one of the smallest
towns in the PBS system.” The quality
of its programming, including Austin
City Limits (which follows immediately
after Grassland Jam), and more recent
additions including The Roosevelts and
Downton Abbey, have earned Public
Television an impressive audience share.
In 2014, PBS was one of only three major
broadcast or cable networks to increase
viewership.
So what might the future hold
for MBOTMA and Pioneer? Filming
at future festivals is one possibility.
Another possibility would be having
MBOTMA bands perform for On Stage.
This program offers local musicians an
opportunity to perform in front of a live
audience in Appleton’s historic opera
house or at other venues in Pioneer’s
broadcast area. The opera house, on
Minnesota’s western border, also serves
as Pioneer’s home. In lieu of monetary
compensation, the bands would receive a
digital recording of their performances.
MBOTMA member bands that are interested in performing for On Stage should
contact Pioneer at [email protected].
Preference will be given to bands from
Pioneer’s primary viewing area.
Patrick Moore, Pioneer’s communications coordinator, observed that neither Pioneer nor MBOTMA could exist
without volunteers and contributions
from its members. And, like MBOTMA
members, Pioneer’s members, board of
directors, and staff are excited about
adding bluegrass and old-time music to
Pioneer’s repertoire.
As Bogart said, “I think this is the
beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

Review
Bluegrass Stuff: The Old Bridge

When you think about bluegrass, there
are places that spring readily to mind:
Clinch Mountain, Flint Hill, Kentucky,
Italy. Well, okay, that last one might be a
stretch, but it’s not quite as off-the-wall
as it first appears. Case in point, The
Old Bridge, a new album on the El Toro
Records label by an Italian band called
Bluegrass Stuff. Though the band’s name
seems a little stilted (maybe it loses
something in translation), their music
isn’t. This is solid, traditionally-based
bluegrass played by folks who clearly
know the genre, even though their
home’s across the Apennine, rather than
the Blue Ridge, Mountains. It reminds
us that bluegrass has truly international
appeal.
The band, with apparently few personnel changes, has been together since
1977, winning many European awards
along the way, and it shows. Their playing is tight and their singing true to the
bluegrass spirit, albeit with a bit of an
Italian accent. That can be disconcerting
at first, although personally I’ve become
acclimated to hearing it in this setting
as a big fan of the great Italian flatpicker
and singer Beppe Gambetta. Combined
with the traditional Appalachian dialect that pervades bluegrass, it actually
becomes endearing after a while.
Songs include “Send Me Your
Address From Heaven” à la Red Allen,
Bill Monroe’s “Big Ball in Brooklin” (sic;
hey, they’re Italian), “Fraulein,” the big
Bobby Helms country hit from the late
fifties, and the old gospel number “Do
Not Pass Me By.” The band plays all over
Europe, and “My Suiss Mountain Home”
smilingly combines bluegrass picking
with alpine yodeling. “Monroeniana” is
an A-minor tribute to guess who, by the
band’s mandolin player Massimo Gatti.
The title track is a truly enjoyable, moderately-paced instrumental apparently
original to the band.
Nothing startlingly cutting-edge
here, but that doesn’t appear to be what
they’re aiming at. The band wants to
play good bluegrass well and in an entertaining way, and they do. It’s worth a
listen.

Bluegrass Saturday Morning

The Winter Bluegrass Weekend in review
This column is written not a week removed from MBOTMA’s
Winter Bluegrass Weekend. The weekend was successful on
many fronts. Firstly, if you view the WBW, as I do, as a signpost
that leads to spring, we are now enjoying 60-degree weather.
Bluegrass certainly chased away the ice and snow.
But seriously, I attended a very successful event. Every jam
room was filled with music and musicians, concerts were well
attended, and people were staying up late because it was more
fun to stay up.
My association with Spotlight On continued, with a program in the Old Time Dance Hall focusing on old-time banjo.
Many styles and types of banjo were represented. Thanks to
John Heine, Rob Daves, Adam Kiesling, and Aaron Tacke for
participating.
Spotlight On in 2015 was a partial re-staging of a program
held at the Underground Music Café in St. Paul. Bill Cagley
presented it, but he wants to make sure John Heine gets credit
for inspiring the program.
Support content-driven radio
Minnesota Bluegrass should arrive in mailboxes before March
27, 2015, the final date that KBEM’s spring fund drive affects
Bluegrass Saturday Morning and the Bluegrass Review.
The KBEM staff has pledged to take a different approach to
the fund drive this time. It’s always our goal to intersperse promotional messages with the usual good programming. We are
looking forward to listeners responding to our message about
our style of content-driven radio.
Thanks a lot for your support in the past. I believe that the
KBEM staff is as strong as it has ever been, and that the sound
of the entire operation is getting better all the time. As for me, I
continue to enjoy presenting bluegrass music old and new.

I view the period from April through June as the beginning
of the summer sprint. From spring through summer, we’re all
trying to get a lot done before we have to move inside.

KING WILKIE’S DREAM
PLUS
King Wilkie's Dream is the culmination of a convergence of
talent and circumstance, orchestrated by a musical marriage
broker, of sorts. It is bluegrass music. It is fresh. It is musically
exciting. Three members are most-recently refugees of Hey
Lonesome, a Twin Cities based bluegrass band, and the other two
have been busy with many different genres of music. Robbi Podrug
and Shane Zack join Vaughn Asselstine and John Niemann, to create
a new sound and a big noise in the world of acoustic music. The
groove is infectious, the musical arrangements are inspired, and
the vocal harmonies will make you sit up straight and take notice.
BLUE GROOVE
Blue Groove is a contemporary bluegrass band located in
Minneapolis. David Smith (banjo), Adelle Hyrkas (guitar), Jim
Krans (bass), Mike Keyes (guitar) and Brent Fuqua (mandolin)
draw their material from a variety of artists including Gillian
Welch, Alison Krauss, and JD Crowe.
