Mission Prep’s Three Time CIF Champion Krossa Stepping Down
John Krossa is Leaving MCP Girls Basketball after Serving Nine Years as Head Coach
San Luis Obispo, CA-Today, Mission College Prep President James Childs announced that Varsity Girls
Basketball Coach John Krossa will be stepping down as Head Coach, and will remain the Assistant Principal for
Student Activities and Leadership Class teacher. Krossa led the Royals to three CIF championships in his tenure as
head coach, amassing 173 wins with only 84 losses. Assistant Coach Andrew Richardson has been hired as his
successor.
Krossa said, “It’s been a privilege and a joy to coach the Lady Royals, We strived to embody the high standard and
culture of success on and off the court that Jay Cowitz instilled at Mission Prep. I will cherish all the time I was able
to spend teaching the game of basketball, but more importantly preparing the players to be successful in life. I
couldn’t be more proud to hand this group of young women off to Coach Richardson. It’s always bothered me when
coaches leave when the cupboard is bare. This is not the case. We have a talented group of returning players, and
they will be successful next year and in the years to come.”
Krossa led the Royals to two state finals appearances and coached two athletes who were named County Player of
the Year. Krossa served nine years (2006-2015) as the Girls Varsity Head Coach. Prior to leading the Lady Royals
basketball team, he spent three seasons as the Boys JV Head Coach (2000-2002), one as Boys Varsity Assistant
Coach (2003), and four as the Girls Varsity Tennis Coach (2003-2006).
Krossa is stepping away to spend more time with his family, who includes his wife Gwenn, and children, J.T., Lani,
and Cooper.
Richardson, a class of 2008 MCP Alumni, and graduate of ASU, will assume control of the Royals after one year as
Assistant Coach. Richardson, who Krossa calls “one of the best pure point guards in the history of Mission Prep
Basketball,” played for Boys Varsity Coach Terrance Harris from 2005-08, and holds records for his unselfish play,
including the all-time record for assists in a game.
Richardson is a local Realtor who grew up on the Central Coast. He brings his playing experience, passion for the
game, and community roots to a program that knows how to win. On accepting the position, Coach Richardson said,
“I’m very excited. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while. Being a young coach, it’s exciting to take over a
program that has such a storied history. I’m looking forward to taking the Royals back to the height of success that
they achieved in previous years.”
