President’s Message
Dear friends:
Spring has finally arrived and it is also the busiest time for our Society. Our
volunteers for the Cat Program are prepared to work overtime in the next few
months, as calls on stray cats and kittens will reach a high level during this
period. As always, we expect an increase in the intake of cats and this will
mean additional veterinary fees. By taking in these stray cats and
neutering/spaying them we are also helping reduce the over-population of
stray cats in the city.
We are pleased to announce the opening of another Cat Adoption location at
PET VALU at Meadowvale in April. This makes a total of 5 locations for our cat
adoptions!
This year will be the 16th year in operation of Mississauga Humane Society
since our inception in 1999. To celebrate this, we will be hosting an
anniversary party! The public is welcome to attend, including their dogs (and
cats if they are not afraid of dogs!) It will be held at DOPTOPIA on Saturday,
June 6. Please read details on Page 8 NEWS & EVENTS.
For the next few months we will also be very busy in organizing our major
and annual fund raising gala, the ‘STARLIGHT SORIEE’.
This year we
promise a bigger and a better one, in a different banquet hall. Please note
down FRIDAY, July 10 for this big gala.
I wish you a happy and safe spring!

MARLEY
Made me believe in the ABILITY to CHANGE
If, in your lifetime, you have an
opportunity to trust a dog with your
heart, take it. It will change your life
forever! It will show others what can
happen when you commit your
heart to a dog with problems.
I grew up with dogs and thought I
knew them. After losing a faithful
companion of 15 years, I met
MARLEY on the Mississauga
Humane Society website and knew
he was a dog I needed to meet.
We went to see him at John Howe’s, his foster parent. Marley
greeted us happily and it was love at first sight. During his trial
weekend, we played in the yard, went for walks and then found
out that Marley, because of his background of abuse, was not
an aggressive dog, but a fearful dog with strangers. He was
fearful of people touching his feet or startling him in any way.
When he growled at my husband who had been cuddling him
on the floor, we were alarmed. We had little grandchildren, who
visited often. He was a guarder of anything that was his,
especially food, and that was cause for concern. We agonized
over the weekend and concluded that we could not keep him.
We were heartbroken and had already fallen in love with
Marley. I called John to tell him. Then Marley and I went for a
walk with me crying all the way and Marley looking up at me
with great concern, trying to figure out what the problem was. A
veterinarian friend met Marley and said not to return him before
trying obedience training. I called and was directed to private
training since Marley was not so stable at that point. We needed
someone firm but soft.
Marley knew how to deal with
harshness and that choice wasn’t going to be productive. I was
linked to a fabulous trainer.. He was the perfect choice for
Marley! By the end of the first session, Leo and Marley were
lying on the rug at the front door, and Leo gave him a loving
smack on his side and said, “Keep this dog!” This was the
beginning of a 13 year love-in with Marley. Marley with his
challenges, Marley with his joys!
Personally, I have never committed this kind of time or these
kinds of resources to a dog, but never have I had the special
relationship that I had with Marley. Despite all of the challenges
he brought, I would do it for him again in a heat beat! We went to
school once a week with Leo and practised our obedience work.
Marley would have play dates with Leo’s dogs that would come
for the day. He learned to play at the dog park with Leo’s Scully.
Marley loved learning and only had to be shown things once.
Within his first year with us, he had his Companion Dog title. As
he was going into his second year, we took in, for what was to be
a short time, a mellow, 7 month old Australian Shepherd, Josie.
Marley fell in love with her. Josie ended up staying with us
permanently.
I spent Marley’s first year with us with my stomach in a knot. If it
hadn`t been for Leo, I`m sure that I
could not have seen this through.
What I had to learn was how to
manage Marley’s environment so
he was not compromised.
I
learned to muzzle him for visits to
the veterinarian which were
upsetting to him, although he
trusted Tracey and knew she was
helping him. He would lay his
muzzled head on her chest as she
dealt with him. He had intuition
that humans could only hope for. I
learned that he didn’t need to meet
everyone who came into our
house.
The problem was not
Marley, but people who wouldn’t
listen. People think that they know about dogs until they meet
one with problems. He loved the dog park. He intervened if
another dog was being picked on. He knew what it felt like to be
the underdog and he always helped others in that situation. He
made friends with people who understood him and were drawn to
his amazing attributes.
After the first few years, Marley was pretty much a model citizen.
He did learn to trust others if he deemed them trustworthy. He
had the ability to sort out the questionable, from the solid folks.
The scars of his abuse would never disappear, throughout his life,
but he was the most loving and smartest dog that I, and others,
have ever met. There was no aggression in Marley, only instinct
and fear caused by others. When we would go on holidays,
people would come to our home to sit with Marley and Josie. We
did what we could in each circumstance to reduce his need to be
upset or fearful and he paid us back in full measure. He was a
dog full of spirit, loved new experiences, solved problems like a
pro, and loved his family and friends with his heart of gold.
It will be a year on July 16 that Marley left us, but his paw print
will stay on my heart forever. I miss him dearly and his spirit and
the lessons he taught me about how to trust, how to have
patience with others, how to believe in the ability to change, and
how to love will be with me always!

RORY was one of the many strays we rescued. When we took him in he was very matted and in poor
shape, suffering from pneumonia. A detailed examination reviewed that he also has severe STOMATITIS inflammation of the oral cavity (gum, teeth) that causes pain/bleeding. All of his teeth except two had to be
removed. RORY is a fighter and has good spirits. He’s doing fine after the surgery. He just needs a loving
foster home. He is a friendly and lively boy. No special care is needed and the disease is not contagious to
other cats. Can you FOSTER RORY please?

TOP 10 REASONS for FOSTERING
A HOMELESS PET
MHS
1.
DID you know that MHS does
not have a shelter and relies
on a network of foster homes?
Foster parents are therefore
our LIFEBLOOD:
’’FOSTER A PET
SAVE A LIFE’’
WE PROVIDE THE FOOD
YOU PROVIDE THE LOVE
1.
You are saving an animal’s life that might not otherwise have a chance. Many rescues are
full to their limits and cannot take in more animals until more foster homes open up.
2.
You are sparing the dog or cat from imprisonment in a cage or kennel at the pound.
3.
You are also helping saving more homeless pets as the boarding fees saved can be used
to help other pets in need.
4.
It’s a good way to find out if you are ready for committing to a pet.
5.
It’s also a good way to see if a second or third pet would fit in with your family.
6.
You and/or your own pet can enjoy the company of a pet without financial commitment.
7.
You help to increase the chance of adoption of the pet. Animals living in a foster home
are more socialised and adoptable than those who live in a pound environment.
8.
It’s a wonderful life affirming experience for an entire family, a couple or a single person.
It will also provide a sense of responsibility and compassion for your children.
9.
You will become more educated & experienced with the support and training provided.
10.
Volunteering makes you feel good. It’s a good way to give back to your community.

the weekend of March 13-15, 2015, over a thousand
people came to Furnal Equinox (furnalequinox.com), a
“furry” arts convention in Toronto, to participate in
art, costuming and social activities with one another.
But not only that – with MHS volunteer Betty Karafilis
in attendance, they raised a new record of $9,001 in
their charity auction, bringing their total raised for
MHS to over $33,000 over five years! Congratulations
to Furnal Equinox’s attendees and Board of Directors,
