The Eagle’s Nest Mitchell County School System May 2015 Vic Hill, MCSS Superintendent “Don’t Be Like The Rest; Dare To Be The Best” MCHS Eagle Challenge Scavenger Hunt By: Emily Rossitter and Leonor Davalos, MCHS Eagle News Reporters The Mitchell County High School’s Eagle Challenge Scavenger Hunt was held on April 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; over 200 parents and their children came out for the event with many parents arriving as early as 4:15 p.m. The event was both fun and educational. There were three mandatory stations: Station 1: Student Led Conference (held in the student’s 3rd period where students showed their parents their report cards and talked about how they were doing in all of their classes.). Station 2: Review of MCHS School and Title I Plans and MCSS Plans. Parents, students and the facilitators reviewed and talked about the different plans and parents filled out a review sheet; and Station 3: The Path to Success/Dual Enrollment—MCHS Counselor Lori Brinkley talked about the requirements for graduation, CTAE pathways, dual enrollment and state testing information. Next came the fun stations: Balance Beam, Trampoline, Basketball Shot, Healthcare, Karaoke, Name That Tune, QR Codes Trivia, Frisbee, Scramble, ROTC Drill, and Plant ID’s/Goody Bag. After completing all the stations, the parents/students turned in their scorecard and enjoyed a spaghetti dinner prepared by the MCHS Culinary Arts students. It was an incredible and enjoyable way for parents and their children to interact with the MCHS’s faculty and staff. Above: Parents and students show their skills on the trampoline; MCHS Eagle News Reporter and CTAE Business Advisory Member Victor Johnson had participants to talk live on MCHS Eagle News Radio Station WMCZ-LP 94.5 FM. MCMS AR Celebrations To celebrate reading success, those students who met their AR reading point goals for the second and/or third nine weeks enjoyed bowling at Fun Park in Albany. For some, this was the first time they had ever been bowling! Continuing the celebrations, students who met their reading point goals for both the second and third nine weeks grading period will be allowed to order lunch and have it delivered to the school. Last but not least, during our Honor’s Day Program on May 29, those students who read 1 million words this year will receive a medal. The top three readers will also be recognized and receive an award. Congratulations to all for a job well done! Parents, please have your children read this summer so that they do not suffer the summer slump. Students who do not read in the summer could fall three or more months behind on their reading level. Consider signing up at the public library for the free summer reading program. The program is open to everyone, even those who can’t read yet. Give your child the jumpstart they need to have the most successful school year ever! Happy Reading! NMCES Cheerleaders ROCK ‘Cause We Know How to ROLL! What a great and busy year for the NMCES Baby Eagle cheerleaders! The cheerleaders started their cheer season off with a successful summer camp in July. The girls were taught the fundamentals of cheering, as well as, how to be a leader. Throughout the year, the 31 cheerleaders participated in the MCHS homecoming, BCCS homecoming, Baconton Pecan Festival, and the Camilla Chamber of Commerce Christmas parades. The girls also were on the program at the First Baptist Church during Red Ribbon Week. They displayed their talents as praise dancers in the NMCES Black History program and at the MCHS Class of 1980 Gospel Explosion. As our year comes to a close, we would like to thank the parents, teachers, community, and our administrators for their continued support of our cheerleaders. May 2015 Jontravia Page 3 MCHS Business Students Honored at Southwest Georgia Regional Commission Banquet Ken In September 2014, Mrs. R. Lee and Ms. L. Twitty’s business students put together their resumes in hopes of being chosen for interviews for the intern positions at the Regional Commission. Five students were chosen for Kwezeta interviewing. After a thorough interview performed by Mrs. Kerrie Davis, Kwezeta Butler, Jontravia Huntley, and Kendarius Silas were chosen as interns. These three students traveled to SWGRC three days a week to perform office duties for the Regional Commission. These duties included making phone calls, filing, editing documents, creating coversheets for grant proposals, assisting in any workshops hosted by SWGRC, as well as numerous other duties. On April 30, 2015, they were honored by the SWGRC for their efforts at the monthly Council meeting. All three were required to give a short speech about their time at SWGRC. All three made their teachers proud! The Council members were very receptive and very gracious. After the students’ speeches, a motion was made by the past president Jack Powell that this program needed to continue because of how well they worked as well as how well they spoke at the meeting. Way to go, Kwezeta, Jontravia, and Ken!! Atlanta: We came. We saw. We conquered! On April 30, 2015, sixty 4th and 5th grade students loaded a bus and headed to Atlanta, Georgia for a wonderful experience. These students from SMCES were able to experience some of the greatest tourist attractions in the state of Georgia during an overnight field trip in Atlanta. The students and chaperones were able to tour the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coke. We were amazed at the sizes, shapes, and features of the various types of sea life in the aquarium. The students were excited to tour the Coke Museum, with the highlight being the “taste tests” of the various flavors of Coke from around the world. We had dinner at the Varsity. Then we journeyed to Zoo Atlanta for an overnight stay and had a “Night Crawler Adventure”. SMCES Parents, Are You Ready for Kindergarten Graduation? The Kindergarten students have been preparing for the first grade by writing an invitation to their family inviting them to the graduation on May 27, 2015. This monumental event will be held in the MCHS gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. Please come out and support the Kindergarteners from SMCES on their greatest achievement! Parents, without you, this accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible. SMCES Measuring Bubbles In Ms. A. Powell’s Pre-K class, students have learned about measurements and how to properly use a ruler. To help make their learning fun and exciting, they had a chance to put their skills to use when they made bubbles as a class activity. The students would try to blow bubbles as big as they could then use the ruler to measure how big they made it. The students enjoyed the activity but they enjoyed making bubbles even more. May 2015 Page 4 SMCES: What Plants and Animals Need By: Ms. Kimberly Davis The first grade students at South Mitchell County Elementary School have been focusing on Science skills in which they are understanding the life cycle of plants and animals. They have been working on the following standards: S1L1: Students will investigate the characteristics and basic needs of plants and animals. S1L1a. Students will identify the basic needs of a plant; S1L1b. Students will identify the basic needs of an animal; S1L1c. Students will identify the parts of a plant; and S1L1d. Students will compare and describe various animals’ appearance, growth, movement and needs. Students discussed the needs of plants and animals. Students learned that: plants need air, water, nutrients, and sunlight to grow and live; animals need food, water, oxygen and shelter to grow and live. Students have been able to observe and investigate plants and animals all year long; we now have a plant in our class that students are responsible for seeing that its needs are met in order to stay healthy. Students are watering and observing it to see if it is getting enough sunlight. With the observation and care of plants, students have also been researching animals. Students have been learning that animals in the wild have to get their own food, but it is the responsibilities of the owner to provide water, food and shelter to pets. They have been on nature hunts that consisted of collecting leaves and animal watching. They have been fortunate enough to have some hermit crabs, fish, and a hamster donated to their Science Lab. Students are very grateful for this donation and have taken on the responsibility to care for these animals. They are responsible for checking to see if the crabs have water and food as well as helping clean the tank. Students feed the fish daily and assist in cleaning and feeding our class hamster, Teddy. The first grade students have truly been enjoying what plants and animals need. May 4-8 marked Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to recognize the outstanding educators who spend each day shaping our children’s lives -and to remember all those who played a role in shaping us. Mrs. Wilcher’s Class Makes a Pizza Mrs. T. Wilcher’s class has been reading “The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza” for their weekly large group literacy. Some of their activities included sequencing the story using pictures, having all the students act out the story, and at the end of the week, the students created their own recipes on how to make a pizza. They were allowed to prep their pizza before it was cooked. The children enjoyed making and eating their pizza. May 2015 Page 5 MCHS Students Tour Albany State University Music Department By: Myron Grimes, MCHS Band Director This is a short synopsis of what the MCHS and MCMS students experienced on April 1, 2015 while attending a Campus tour of the Albany State University Music Department and the Campus at large. The students were definitely engulfed with a wealth of information for them to ponder on throughout the day and on the journey back to MCHS and MCMS campuses respectively. The students and faculty of Albany State University were very open on the campus to provide our MCHS and MCMS students with as much information as possible about student life, and the pitfalls, and hurdles that face incoming freshmen, not only in the music field of study, but in multiple majors and career pathways. At some point during the day we were able to catch a glimpse of the “light bulb” for some our students being turned on, as some really showed an interest in someday attending a college of their choice. I think the day went very well as a catalyst in opening the student’s eyes to the realm of possibilities to all that attended the tour. The faculty had nothing but praise and admiration for the well shown behavior of our MCHS and MCMS students. I really liked that our students were able to go the mass communications department and have a live “on air” taping of a television broadcast program, as well as integrate with the student body throughout the day in the “Student Union” and ask relevant questions for their understanding. The Albany State tour definitely showed that they have a beautiful, and well kept campus. It was a very good experience for both the Albany State University Community and the Mitchell County School System Community to build a bridge in relationship in the ability to attempt to further foster an opportunity for higher educational opportunities of the student, the campus, and continued aspects of all involved. Farewell to our MCMS 8th Graders The 8th grade students will soon reach the end of their journey through middle school. It has been tough, but now the school year is winding down. Excitement is in the air as the 8th graders prepare for our Gradventure trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida and our end of the year festivities, such as the 8th Grade Prom!
