Industry Team Initiative Jaymes Bonacci, Jessica Bond, Joel Mattiske and Vivian Ly Optimisation of Safety Performance through Enhanced Communication About Transurban Transurban is a Top 20 listed company on the ASX, owning and operating networks of urban toll roads in both Australia and the USA. Their vision is to strengthen communities through transport, to be achieved with Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Ingenuity and Respect; Transurban’s core values. Our Role The MITI Team were given the task of optimising safety performance of the business through improved communication. The broad scope of the project gave the team the opportunity to adopt the role of Safety Consultants; allowing independent investigation into all aspects of the business. After gaining insight into the matrix structure of Transurban, we initiated collaboration with representatives from a range of business units in order to identify safety issues, with the ultimate goal of developing and implementing solutions. Three key focus areas were identified from which several projects were subsequently derived. These areas include: Road Safety Workplace Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Figure 1- The Gateway on Citylink, one of Transurban’s assets. Community Engagement Road Safety The road infrastructure is the key part of the product that Transurban offers its customers, so it is imperative that it is a safe environment. A large quantity of data is collected, particularly regarding incidents that occur on the road. However, there are currently insufficient resources to make the best of use of this information. To combat this the team analysed the data to look for any trends or patterns of interest. In the process, we also created a simpler, more accurate method of collecting incident data, recommended the removal of greenery obscuring road signs, and made modifications to the formula controlling the activation of a Variable Message Sign (VMS); all of which should help improve the safety of the road environment. b W301 To help minimise Transurban’s environmental impact, we reduced the confusion surrounding use of the different waste disposal options. Community Engagement Safety on the roads can also be improved by ensuring that road users are acting safely. To promote this we utilised the CityLink stall at the Moonee Valley Festival. A number of key road safety messages, targeting children (our future drivers) in particular, were used to create attractive posters, colouring pages, and a photobooth template for the festival. a Figure 2- An example of (a) a hotspot identified through data analysis and (b) screenshot of improved location data collection for incident reporting. a b Workplace HSE After an overhaul of the workplace safety strategy at the end of 2014, Transurban’s Safety team were looking at ways they could make HSE exciting and promote a ‘safety culture’ within the business. To assist them, we created a number of cartoons and animations to subtly remind Transurban employees that HSE is about more than just hazard identification. We also introduced a number of wellbeing initiatives available to employees across the business. These will encourage them to remain active and lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle. c Figure 3- Examples of the comic strips developed to promote workplace safety. Our Experiences We thoroughly enjoyed our time working at Transurban. As well as being valuable work experience to prepare us for graduate positions, we also had the opportunity to work with a number of different business units and gain an understanding of how a successful, multi-national company operates. We met many interesting people, and were lucky enough to work at the new head office. Some of the highlights of our time at Transurban include going out on site to CityLink, spending time at the Traffic Control room, and attending an event launch lunch featuring two top Australian athletes.
