Should you be unable to pick up your child from school if
he/she is sick or needs to leave early for an appointment,
please keep in mind that school staff can only dismiss your
child to someone listed on the Personal Data & Emergency
Record form the school has on file. You can use the Parent
Portal to view who is authorized to pick up your child. If
you need to add someone to your child’s emergency
contacts, you can send a note to the office or have your
child pick up a new form to be completed. If an unexpected
emergency arises and you must send someone not listed as
an emergency contact to get your child, we must have your

HSA TESTING/ARRIVAL SCHEDULE
Only test takers will be in school for the mornings of scheduled HSAs.

schools between 10:35 and 10:45 a.m. Drivers are requested not to drop students before 10:35 a.m. Bus
drivers have been directed to pick up all students at the stop.

MARDELA WRESTLING
Several wrestlers are taking advantage of the post-season tournaments and training. In
addition, middle school wrestling will continue through June 3.
Be sure to check the Mardela Wrestling link on the Mardela High School website to see
Wrestling updates, current results, and past accomplishments. Any questions/concerns can be

FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)
The members of the FBLA did a great job this school year conducting independent business meetings,
ringing the bell at the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign, and cleaning the roads during the MD Adopt-AHighway program each quarter while maintaining their status on the Honor Roll. Several members will be
graduating this year wearing their FBLA Honor Cords; they include Kai Johnson, President; Kara McKenzie,
Secretary; Malinda Hurley, Treasurer; and Brianna Melson. With several hard-working members returning, we
look forward to doing more great things in the upcoming school year.
YEARBOOK
The 2015 edition will be another ALL COLOR Yearbook that is scheduled to be handed out at the
Back-to-School BBQ in August. There are very few yearbooks remaining for purchase at $65; once the yearbooks
are sold out there will be no more ordered. You can purchase them at the school from Mrs. Skeen and Coach
Johnson or you can purchase them online at Smart-Pay.com.

From the Nurse
We are approaching the last full month of school. This is a reminder that if your child has medication at the
school, our policy requires that a parent or responsible adult picks up the medication at the end of the year. All
medications will need picked up by June 16, 2015, at 12 noon. Any medication remaining at that time will be
disposed of according to policy. If you would like a form for next year’s medication, the nurse can give you one at
that time. You will find a link to this form as well as other useful information on the nurse’s web page at:

MARDELA WARRIOR BOOSTER CLUB
Please join us at our next Warrior Booster Club meeting on Monday, May 11, at 7:00
p.m. in the Media Center. We welcome everyone to join our active group of athletic

The Spring Sport’s Reception is scheduled for Monday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the

Starting Tuesday, May 26, 2015, the cafeteria will no longer allow students to charge meals to
their account. Also beginning May 26, the cafeteria will no longer accept checks as payments.
Please send cash for all meals or deposit money on your account through the school system web
service, mypaymentsplus.com (fees will apply.) Balances remaining on student’s accounts after
the last day of school will remain going into next school year. If the balance is $10 or greater, or if
your student will not be a Wicomico County Public Schools student next school year, you may
request a refund. To receive a refund, please contact Ms. Karen Culver, food service manager, In
order to receive a refund, you must request it. You should receive you refund by mail within 30
days.

Mardela Authors, Readers, and Orators Shine!!!
Mardela is proud to acknowledge the recent achievements of a number of our students in several different writing,
speaking, and reading competitions. It is a true testament to the rigorous instruction and love of learning that occurs
in our school each and every day that our students feel confident to compete AND win against students from all
over the state!!
Eastern Shore Reading Council’s “Young Authors’ Contest” Winners:
6th graders Rylie Green and Alyssa Boltz were recently recognized at Salisbury University’s Young Author’s
Celebration for their winning poems in the regional young authors’ competition. Rylie (1st place) and Alyssa (2nd
place) each received their own copies of an anthology containing all of the winning contest entries in the areas of
poetry, short stories, and essays from students across the eastern shore. Congratulations to both young authors!
Optimist Club’s Oratorical Contest:
Middle school students Michael Klos, Trinity Donovan, Alyssa Boltz,
and Emily Lawson recently competed in the Optimist Club’s annual
Oratorical Contest against over 30 high school students from our
county. They were the youngest students to compete this year, yet
they held themselves up with poise and confidence. They worked
for several weeks on their speeches, addressing the topic of: How
My Optimism Helps Me Press on to Greater Achievements of the
Future, and then presented their final speeches to an audience of
judges and family members. The students are to be commended for
taking their own time and effort to prepare their speeches and take
part in practice sessions ahead of time. Congratulations to 7th grader Michael Klos for advancing to Round 2 of the
competition by scoring so well with his impressive speech and passionate delivery. He placed second at Round 2
and earned a check for $150.00 and a silver medallion!!
Shorebirds’ Hit the Books Reading Incentive:
Many of our middle school students were excited to
win 2 FREE TICKETS to a Shorebirds baseball game for
participating in the Hit the Books reading incentive.
They were tasked with reading 4 books within a 6-week
period to qualify for the free tickets. Over 70 students
from MMHS will enjoy the game on April 24th!!
American Legion’s Americanism Essay Contest
Some of our 7th and 8th grade history students, under the direction of their teachers, Mrs. Marshall and Mr. Davidson,
recently competed in the Americanism Essay Contest by writing on the topic: “What Does Freedom Mean to My
Family?” Troy Turner (grade 8), Julie Morfin-Montiel (grade 7), and Johanna Snider (grade 7) placed 1st, 2nd, and
3rd, respectively, and Troy’s essay was sent on to the next level of judging to compete against winners from other
districts. Congratulations to all three middle schoolers for their outstanding achievements in writing! Your effort
and abilities were clearly recognized by the judges.

Maryland Music Educators Association Outstanding Music Teacher Award
On Saturday, April 18, 2015, Mr. Cory Boltz was presented with a Maryland Music Educators Association
Outstanding Music Teacher Award. The reception was held at the Turf Valley Convention Center in
Ellicott City, MD. In attendance was Gary Beauchamp (Wicomico County Supervisor of Music & Fine
Arts); Dawn, Andrew, Abbie & Alyssa (Cory's Family); Dennis & Audrey Boltz (Cory's Parents), MMEA
Executives and a host of other supervisors, principals, students, and music educators from elementary to
college. Awards given to others in attendance included 2 additional MMEA Outstanding Music Teacher
Awards, 2 MMEA Service Awards (one presented to C. Benton Reavis, long-time choral instructor for
James M. Bennett HS), an MMEA Administrator Award, and an MMEA Hall of Fame Award.
Thank you to all the students and parents who had a hand in earning Mr. Boltz (and MMHS) this
recognition!

Guidance Update
Dual Enrollment Question and Answer Session at final PTA – May 7, 6:00-6:30 in Media Center: On May 7, our last PTA
meeting, Mrs. Shiles will hold a dual enrollment question and answer session from 6:00 to 6:30 in the Media
Center. While you do not have to attend if your child wants to dual enroll, this is a great opportunity to get your
questions answered. Items that will be covered include the steps to dual enrollment, classes covered through dual
enrollment, dual enrollment expectations and how dual enrollment credits come back to the student transcript.
Naviance: Keep using this college and career research site. Our counselors will continue to help students utilize the many
resources available through this to our student including college and career searches, personality tests, resume building,
college applications and scholarship searches. Seniors please make sure to select the school you are planning on
attending, so your final transcripts can be sent.
Scheduling: Our counselors will continue working on the scheduling process for next year. Juniors: if you are planning on
applying to a MD system college or university, you must take a non-trivial math your senior year. Many out of state
colleges may require this too – check those you are interested in. Freshmen and below: you must enroll in a math course
every year you are in high school. It is the law now, so there is no getting around it. Our counselors will help you plan this
out.

ATEX: Forms for students (8th or 9th) interested in signing up to take the ½ year ATEX course through the Career and
Technology Education (CTE) Center at Parkside are available through guidance and should be turned in as soon as
possible.

Firefighter/EMT & Nursing Assistant: These are one-year CTE programs. Students do not go through ATEX for these
programs. Any student interested can sign-up outside of Mrs. Shiles’ office

Cosmetology: This is a 3-year program at CTE. 9th graders could have signed up through ATEX this year already. If you are
interested and did not do ATEX, then the sign-up is available outside of Mrs. Shiles’ office

Dual Enrollment: A student must be 16 years or older, least a 2.75 GPA and transportation. Students will sign up with
Mrs. Shiles. She will complete a dual enrollment form. Students must apply to Wor-Wic (this can be done at any time).
Students can still go to Wor-Wic and take the diagnostic. Students with 550 on the reading and math sections of the SAT
do not have to take the accuplacer diagnostic test for Wor-Wic. Students will then take his/her dual enrollment from to
Mr. Webster in admissions and schedule classes. The earlier the better! A copy of your schedule MUST be given to Mrs.
Shiles as soon as you get it. Your senior schedule cannot be finalized over the summer without it.

Scholarships: Keep the applications coming! Remember you can find the county scholarship list under the colleges tab in
Naviance. Then select “scholarship list.” If you select “deadline,” Naviance will sort the scholarships by date making it
easier to see the ones due soon. Remember there are a few scholarships available to students in middle through eleventh
grade; you can search that too.
Summer Hours: Our counselors are given very limited hours to work over the summer. Final senior transcripts will be
sent out at the end of June. Dual enrollment schedules can be dropped off at any time to the ladies in the front office but
the sooner the better. Mrs. Shiles is planning on being in school about one day a week, with the exception of July 12-26
when she is out of town. Please understand that any emails, phones calls and/or appointment requests will be returned
as soon as possible when the counselors are in the school. If there is an emergency need for the counselor (death in
family, serious injury, etc.) please call the main office, so they can contact the counselor immediately.

HIGH SCHOOL EXAM EXEMPTION INCENTIVE PROGRAM
Mid-term and Final Exams will be given in each high school course. To encourage scholarship, good attendance,
and good behavior students may earn the opportunity to participate in an exemption incentive based on
scholarship (to include HSA exam performance and semester averages), attendance* (*calculation to include
tardies to school and class), and conduct. (Calculations in each area are measured by semester.)
SCHOLARSHIP AND ATTENDANCE:
To be eligible for participation in the exam exemption incentive from a mid-term or final exam a student must meet
the following assessment, grade and attendance standards.
ASSESSMENT STANDARD:
A student who has taken and passed all of the HSA exams will be eligible for participation in the exam exemption
incentive, provided all other criteria are met.
GRADE AND ATTENDANCE STANDARD:
A student meeting the grade and attendance standard as noted in this section will be eligible for participation in
the exam exemption incentive, provided all other criteria are met.

will be considered for participation in this incentive program as a student having 3 days of absence.)
CONDUCT STANDARD:
A student with one or more days of out-of-school suspension during the semester will not be eligible for
participation in the exam exemption incentive and will be required to take exams regardless of HSA performance,
grades or attendance.
ADDITIONAL EXAM EXEMPTION INCENTIVE PROGRAM INFORMATION:
General Provision:
A student may choose not to participate in the exam incentive program. A student may wish to take exams
regardless of meeting the exemption criteria to improve his/her semester average. This option is “no fault” as
the student will receive the higher of the grades (most recent term or exam) as the exam grade. Example:

Administrative Procedures:
Attendance accountability will begin on the first day of official school attendance in August and the first day of the
second semester in January.
Cumulative days absent will be totaled six (6) days before the first day of mid-term and final exams. This will allow
for distribution of attendance tallies to teachers, distribution of exam exemption notification, teacher and parent
sign-off, and submission to the main office.
If the exempt student fails to maintain attendance or grade eligibility during the period between running the
attendance and the exam, the individual teachers will notify the student and parent by phone call or written notice
that the student is no longer exempt from the exam.
Distribution of parent notification, exam notification letters, and sign off sheets will occur in English classes.
A letter notifying parents of the exam incentive program will be distributed at the beginning of the school year.
Exam schedules will be announced by the principal.
Teachers will take class attendance during exam days.
Exempt students will not be required to attend school during the exam periods. The parent/teacher sign off sheet
will serve as permission to be absent from school during those periods. A parent note is required for the student
to leave the building during any other period.
If the student is not exempt during a period, he/she is expected to be in class. If the student skips the exam, he/she
earns an E for the exam.
Activities will be planned for exempted students who remain at school.
If a student is exempt from the mid-term exam, his/her 2nd marking term grade will be recorded as the mid-term
exam grade. If a student is exempt from the final exam, his/her 4th marking term grade will be recorded as the final
exam grade.
Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Participation Incentive
THIS SECTION IS RELEVANT ONLY TO THOSE STUDENTS TAKING THE AP EXAM FOR THE AP CLASS IN WHICH THE
STUDENT IS ENROLLED.
If the student participates in the AP exam for the AP course of enrollment, the student will be automatically exempt
from the final exam in that class.
This does not apply to mid-year exams for the AP class. The criteria detailed in sections regarding scholarship,
attendance, conduct, etc., are to be applied for mid-term exam exemption incentive status.

receiving weekly MMHS Band Announcements (usually sent Thursday nights/Friday mornings of each week), please

Congratulations Jr. and Sr. All-Shore Band Participants
Mardela Middle and High School was represented by Morgan McGee (8th grade flute), Alyssa Boltz (6th grade French
horn), Mitchell Adams (8th grade trombone), Hunter Wirt (8th grade percussion), Malik Allen (8th grade percussion),
Megan Roy (11th grade clarinet), Samantha Rozaieski (12th grade trumpet), Andrew Boltz (12th grade trombone), and
Matthew Adams (11th grade percussion) in the 2015 All-Shore Bands, held at Easton HS on April 10 & 11. Both
groups were EXCELLENT. Auditions for the next year’s All-Shore Bands will be in January 30, 2016 at MARDELA
MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL (audition materials will be available November 1, 2015).
Congratulations to the HS Symphonic Band
The Mardela HS Symphonic Band traveled to Morgan State University on Monday, April 27 to be judged in the 2015
Maryland HS State Band Festival. They received 2-2-2 on stage (two of those scores 1 subscore underneath 1’s) and a
1 in sightreading. We also gained valuable perspectives that will improve our performance for the Apple Blossom
Festival and our upcoming Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 6, 7:00 p.m., in the MMHS Cafetorium. The entire
band should be proud of their performance! Congrats!!
2015-16 Symphonic Band Auditions: Late Tapes
All instrumentalists [including current 2014-15 Symphonic Band performers, current Band 8 members, and other
MMHS students not currently performing] must complete & submit digitally recorded auditions to be considered for
the 2015-16 Symphonic and Marching Band. See Mr. Boltz for materials and instructions. Tapes were due on
Wednesday, April 29; late submissions will be accepted until Friday, May 8. Any late files will be scored and placed
behind those submitted on time; students not submitting audition files will not be placed in the performing group.

Band Practices and Performance Updates
The Mardela HS Symphonic Band traveled to Morgan State University in Baltimore on Monday, April 27, for the 2015
MD Sr. State Band Festival. Their first trip to States was in 2013, where they wowed the judges and themselves!
Focus upon the musicianship and teamwork that have resulted in great band sound and mature interpretation that was
noted at the HS District Band Festival (Mar. 11) and display your best for the next set of judges! We are proud of you!
The Warrior Marching Band and Bandfront will be traveling to Winchester, Virginia, April 30-May 2, 2015,
(Thursday 2:30 p.m. to Saturday Night) to participate in the Apple Blossom Festival. The HS Symphonic Band
will compete in a Concert Band Competition (May 1); the Warrior Marching Band and Bandfront will compete in the
Firemen’s Parade (May 1) and the Grand Feature Parade (May 1). Our parade tune this year is “Give It One” from the
Jazz giant on trumpet, Maynard Ferguson. In 2013 & 2014, they were the Sweepstakes Winner for the entire festival
(top band overall); we wish them the best to repeat that achievement a third year in a row.
A Spring Concert (featuring the Mardela MS Festival Band, HS Symphonic Band, and Warrior Marching Band
& Bandfront) will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cafetorium. The student body and
parents of Mardela Middle and High School and the community are invited to this event.
The Mardela HS Warrior Marching Band and Bandfront will be marching in the Mardela Heritage Day Parade on
Saturday, May 9, at 9:15 a.m.

The Mardela MS Festival Band will be traveling Monday, May 11, for the 2015 MD Jr. State Band Festival.
(More specific information will be distributed as it is determined.) They earned the chance to travel by scoring a
SUPERIOR score at their District Band Festival on March 26. They will further perfect their music and musicianship
to present the judges with an outstanding performance. A judge will also evaluate them on Sight Reading. This is the
second year in a row that they have this privilege. Display Mardela Middle School’s finest with pride and
professionalism!
Several students will be traveling to Towson University on Saturday, May 16, to represent Mardela Middle and High
School in the MD State Solo & Ensemble Festival. Traveling students earned this honor by receiving a “1” or
“Superior” rating at the MD District Solo & Ensemble Festival on February 19. Our wishes for great performances go
out to the following groups:

Counting Party for BingoMania 72
A Counting Party for BingoMania 72 will be held on Tuesday, May 5. This is open (and encouraged) for all Mardela
Band & Bandfront students, Grades 6-12 and their families. With an awards ceremony that several regulars will be
attending in town, we need your help. Come to the Mardela Cafetorium at 6:00 p.m. and be ready to count. With
enough help, this should last about 60 minutes.

BingoMania 72
On Saturday, May 9, BingoMania 72 will be held by the Mardela Band Parents Organization at the Wicomico
County Youth and Civic Center. The doors open at 5:00 p.m., Instants Sales begin at 5:15 p.m., Early-Bird Play begins
at 6:00 p.m., and Regular Play of BingoMania 72 begins at 7:30 p.m. The Jackpot Round (a single game worth at least
$5,000.00 [$10,000 in February 2015 according to attendance]) begins typically at 10:00pm. In Mid-April, the
Electronic BingoMania Portal on the MMHS Bands Wiki will be reactivated
(www.MardelaBands.wicomico.wikispaces.org). Returns will be asked of all parents who have students in the
Mardela Middle School Bands, High School Bands and Bandfront. Come out and help, for you will find this evening
to be a BLAST (and it provides handsomely for your children today and—with your help—will well into the future).
Evening food and drink is provided. Our February BingoMania was WILD, with over 1100 bingo players gathering
from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and beyond! We need your help; be a part of the action.
All Band Uniforms Need To Be Returned
All uniforms of HS Symphonic Band, MS Festival Band, MS Intermediate Band (previously requested), Bandfront,
Poms, and Honorguard must be returned by Tuesday, May 12.
Band Awards Ceremony
A band awards ceremony and reception, is planned for Tuesday, May 12 at 6 p.m. All active instrumentalist Grades 612 and bandfront are invited, as well as their immediate family members. Come out and celebrate a VERY successful
school year! Light fare will be served.
Auditions for 2015-16 Poms, Majorettes, Flags and Bandfront
Auditions for the 2015-16 MS Poms, Majorettes and Rifles Squads are coming quickly. Conditioning and teaching
sessions will be held May 18 (Mon) & 19 (Tues), 3-5:00 p.m. in MMHS Cafetorium; Auditions will be held May
20 (3p-?). Auditioners must make both dates. Girls will be selected based upon their performance, perceived ability to
work with the squad, and attitude. The Poms audition is open only to girls who are current 5th, 6th and 7th graders.
Majorettes candidates must have at least 1 year marching experience at MMHS (please come with your own baton).
Rifles auditions is open to all ladies & gents, Gr. 6-12. Contact Mr. Boltz (443)366-5270 with questions.
Auditions for the 2015-16 Warrior Flags will be held May 26 (Tues) & 27 (Wed), 6-8:00 p.m., [you must be there
for both nights] in the MMHS Cafetorium. Auditions are open to students Grades 6-11 who are willing to commit to
the troupe, the band, and schedule. A sign-up sheet is in the office; please sign the sheet so that advance notice of
interest is provided the instructor.
End of the Year Band Incentive Activity
On Friday, June 5, active Band & Bandfront Students (gr6-12) who qualify (at least 80% practice attendance and
performing in all scheduled performances of their groups) & choose to participate in the End of the Year Band
Incentive Activity, will be bussed from MMHS (approx. 8am) to Jolly Rogers of OC, for some time at the WaterPark
and on the GoCarts. Hotdogs and Hamburgers will be grilled for an evening meal (provided). Students will be bussed
back to MMHS in the evening. More exact details will be forthcoming.
HS Symphonic Band to play at MMHS Graduation
On Saturday, May 30, the HS Symphonic Band will be playing at Mardela’s Commencement Ceremony to be held at
the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center at 2:30 p.m. Band students are to report to MMHS by 12:30 p.m. to load,
organize and depart by 1:00 p.m.. Dress is Shirt & Tie for guys, Skirts & Dresses for ladies. They should return to
MMHS by 4:00 p.m.
