Information for businesses and traders

MELBOURNE METRO RAIL
INFORMATION FOR BUSINESSES
AND TRADERS
This fact sheet has been prepared to provide
businesses and traders in the Melbourne CBD with
information about the Melbourne Metro Rail Project.
About the Melbourne Metro Rail Project
The project will connect the Sunbury and Cranbourne
/ Pakenham lines for the first time, creating a new
end-to-end train line through the inner city.
The Melbourne Metro Rail Project will expand
the City Loop, enabling major improvements
in capacity, reliability and efficiency of train lines
serving Melbourne’s growth areas in the north,
west and south-east.
It will bring more people into the city, make central
Melbourne a more attractive option for businesses,
and further position Melbourne as one of the
world’s most liveable cities.
Melbourne Metro involves construction of two
nine-kilometre rail tunnels from South Kensington
in the west to South Yarra in the east and five
new underground stations.

City Loop Tunnels
Route and depth of new rail tunnels
Swanston Street is the preferred route for the
Melbourne Metro Rail Project as it services key
city destinations, provides direct interchanges from
the new CBD North
and
CBD South stations with
MELBOURNE
CENTRAL
Melbourne Central and Flinders Street stations, and
offers the best ground conditions for tunnelling.
This alignment provides relief to the heavily
congested Swanston Street tram network and
allows people travelling City
from
Melbourne’s growing
Loop Tunnels
north, west and south east to better access the city,
via the Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines.
Swanston Street is also the only alignment that
offers the opportunity to pass over the top of the
City Loop tunnels along La Trobe Street, providing
a better outcome for passengers.
Shallow tunnels are preferred for the Melbourne
Metro Rail Project because they:
• Make it quicker and easier for commuters
to get to and from platforms
• Provide better emergency access and exits
• Place the tunnel in better ground conditions
than a deep tunnel
• Are more cost effective than a deep tunnel
Project construction
Due to the scale of the project, there will be
disruption along Swanston Street, and changes
to how the CBD currently operates.
Construction will require temporary changes
to the tram and road networks, and there may
be changes to the way pedestrian and cyclists
currently use Swanston Street.
The long term impact of Melbourne Metro on
Swanston Street and the CBD is overwhelmingly
positive. It will bring thousands of extra people to
the heart of Melbourne, which is great for traders,
business and visitors to our wonderful city.
Working with local businesses and traders
The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA)
is investigating a range of measures to reduce
disruption in the CBD to keep the city moving
during construction.
MMRA is committed to working closely
with businesses and traders along and near
Swanston Street to understand their needs
and how these might inform the preferred
construction methodology.
Next steps
Identifying a preferred route and depth for the
rail tunnels allows more detailed investigations,
including geotechnical works, to be undertaken
as part of the project’s ongoing planning
and development.
MMRA will undertake a detailed consultation
program with stakeholders, including CBD
businesses and traders, later this year.
Major works are expected to commence
on the Melbourne Metro Rail project by 2018.
