Keynote Speakers
Sharon Sayles Belton
Jay Want, MD
Sharon Sayles Belton is the current chair of the Hennepin County Medical Center Board of Directors and the vice president of Community Relations and Government Affairs at Thomson Reuters. In her role, she directs government affairs activities, focusing on key issues that impact the legal businesses of Thomson Reuters as well as its customers and employees. Additionally, she leads the company’s community outreach efforts through Community Relations.
Jay Want, MD, is the owner and principal of Want Healthcare LLC. He consults for a wide variety of clients, including the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He is also the Chief Medical Officer of the non‐profit Center for Improving Value in Health Care.
In 1993, Sayles Belton was the first African American and first woman elected mayor of Minneapolis. During her tenure as mayor from 1994 to 2001, she facilitated the creation of the nationally‐recognized Phillips Partnership to address public safety, job creation and quality housing in one of the highest‐crime, poorest neighborhoods in Minneapolis.
Jay is board‐certified in internal medicine and was a primary care internist in private practice for ten years. This gives him a unique understanding of the challenges that health care reform poses for practicing physicians. He passionately believes that the current system is broken and that physicians can ‐ and should ‐ lead the transformation to a more effective, efficient and humane system for providers and patients alike.
