-AnnouncementsHi All,
The Annual Staff Retreat took on
several focuses this year,
including celebrating the "We" in
Momentum where staff
individually created art puzzle
pieces that joined as one on this
day. We developed the finishing
touches to our Values Statement,
and revisited how Myers Briggs
takes a role in our lives and work,
and how that intertwines with
others around us. We visited a
Culture of Care and learned that
we must take care of our
personal well being as we give
so much to others. We learned about Conflict Resolution, and how
simple steps of approach and attitude make a great impact on the
outcome. And the best part as usual was being together as one for
the day!
Special thanks to our Advisory Board for joining us, Carole Martin,
our main facilitator, Deb Bicknell, Conflict Management
extraordinaire, Justin Park, Culture of Care guru, Lindsay
deCipkes, Puzzle Facilitator and coordination of lots of stuff, Katy
Park, coordinator of lots of stuff, Katie Fortier, venue coordination,
and Dennis Hawkes for his tenacious work cutting out
the puzzle pieces.

a Lobsterman and his buoys
Currently, the Oceanography Club is finishing up the Lobstering exhibit work at the Maine
Maritime Museum. We have collected 31buoys which is over 1/4 of the total buoys that are
going to be in the exhibit!
Next, we will be concentrating on Portland waterfront history in preparation of the Tall Ships
visit in July. Speaking of ships, we have a new PENPAL who is the director of the Center for
Historic Shipwreck Preservation. His name is Chris Macort, and he’s working in Madagascar for
the next several months filming a show for National Geographic. (How cool is that?!) Chris just
discovered a bar of silver that is thought to be from Captain Kidd’s sunken ship. We are going to
write him about his work and hopefully Skype with him from Madagascar!

Survival Skills Workshop
Ben, Justin & Melissa
The Wilderness Club has been busy the past two months. After
teaming up with the Oceanography Club for a visit to Bowdoin
College's Arctic Museum, they attended a Winter Survival
workshop with John and Greg at Maine's Outdoor Learning
Center, built a pine bough shelter, and learned how to survive a
night in the woods. Lou of Mountain Bear Programs and Guide
Service introduced them to bushcraft and primitive skills
including friction fires, cordage making, tree identification, and
harvesting balsam fir for tea. Then it was back to the woods for
a food-hanging tutorial, where everyone learned hands-on the
important differences between a proper bear bag and a squirrel
piñata. No animals were harmed--or fed--during the workshop.
